Hi all: I just moved into an apartment. The closet in my daughter's rooms smells very musty. I contacted the leasing office and they sent someone to look at the closet. They say they lifted the carpet and found no mold. Anyways, the smell remains. I tried "Damp Rid"..but, it is not working. I was thinking of trying a bowl of vinegar (just leaving it in there to soak up the musty smell), OR, perhaps a box of cat liter. Aside from that, not sure what to do. Your suggestions are appreciated. If a "home" remedy will not work, I will call a professional mold/carpet cleaner since the leasing office (as is the case with most apartment complexes) do not care about their residents. C

I have seen these things at walmart and Lowe's type of stores. They are "odor absorbing" and yet they have a smell to them too. They look at bit like the size and shape of a smoke detector, and they come in a citrus scent. We had a bad smoke odor in here (from a grease fire) and then we had a bad paint smell (from the repairs from the fire) and each time those things worked fantastically well. They work fairly quickly, and they are extremely easy to use since all you do is peel off the "lid" and it just sits there. Also, I would ***very carefully*** go to the corner of the closet, and pick up the corner of the carpet myself, and see if the carpet, pad, or floor below look like there is mold/mildew/anything suspicious. You can fairly easily lay the carpet back down. (I've done it myself in 3 areas of our apartment after we've had spills of some sort, and I was concerned about mold)

I would also look around the ceiling and walls. The musty smell could be coming from rotting sheet rock from a leaking roof or room above that has been painted over.

It has not been unheard of for people to simply paint over moldy walls too, so keep a close eye on the walls. If that's the case, it's just a matter of time before the mold starts showing through.

Their Landlord did just what you said...painted over it. In the months they lived there, their 2 year-old little boy started getting extremely ill. The mold began to show in the baby's room on the wall behind his crib...they had it tested and it was the dangerous, physically harmful kind. They moved out within days. They now have had to retain a lawyer because the landlord still refuses to take responsibility for the problem (even after they produced the results of the tests) and they don't know if this will have long lasting phycial implications for their child. I also know of two other people who have gotten sick from mold in apartment buildings. Be careful!

So, perhaps, I should get her room/closet tested for mold? I am discouraged that someone would actually paint over mold. How horrible! C
