A few months ago I posted because I was trying to decide whether or not to let my daughter try out for a competetive pom team. Well, we let her and today was her first competition. It was sooooo fun. I never thought I would be the type of mom to have fun putting glitter all over her face and curls in her hair. But I guess I am. It was fun for both of us.

The competetion was mainly for kids in grades three through highschool, and my daughters team is a youth team and made up of first and second graders. We were told that they had no chance of winning, but at the end of their dance, we were told to keep them in costume just in case because they did so well.

They didn't place, but it was fun anyway, and our Junior team one first place in their division so they got to see their fellow students win a trophy and dance their hearts out. It was sooo cool. And the owner of the studio is this younger really cute and extremely nice woman who was choked up when she saw that. Her teams win competitions all of the time, but it was great to see that she still cares about the dancers over the money.

So I had such a positive experience today and I just wanted to share.

Tracy, that sounds like so much fun! I was a competitive figure skater at that age and it was such a wonderful experience for me.

It's nice to see that you and your daughter both enjoyed it so much!

Thanks Lexie. Her and I have a very hot and cold relationship. She is very stubborn and can throw very loud and sometimes violent tantrums so hopefully this will be something we can do together and have some fun with. Usually, she gets all nervous and melts down before she preforms, but this time she woke me up and was so excited. I don't know if it was because it was her fist actual competition, or if we just caught her in a good mood, but she did have a total meltdown at lunch in a resturaunt. I had to take her out, but a few minutes of quiet time out there calmed her down pretty easily.

Next week, they are showing it on our cable network so we can vote for our favorite school. I am going to send that out to family who didn't get to see her so they can watch if they want. Plus the school with the most votes gets prize money and that is always good in programs like this.

And in the end, one of our Jr. teams won their division. That was soooo cool.

Remind me how old your daughter is? I posted a few weeks ago about how frustrated I was with mine after she took a cheerleading camp. I helped some and if she does cheer in the fall (at school, 4th grade), I want to coach. But she's pig headed and seems to do things to frustrate me. I want this to be something we can do together but we'll see.

It can be so much fun. It's so great that you both enjoyed it so much! I cheered for years but my mom just went along with it. It's a huge hassle, expense...and can be stressful (competing) but sounds like she's got the bug!

My daughter is 7 and what gets me about this is that her and I clash sooo much. That same day, she started up in a resturaunt and I literally had to drag her out because she was making such a scene and I tried to get her to walk with me, but she held onto the chair and screamed louder. It was not good. But I did get her outside and it took about 5 minutes to calm her down enough to get her to listen to me and understand that this was not going to happen again.

I found a dance studio that is very good at putting the kids first. The owner was in tears when she saw one of our teams take first place, but just before that, she was talking about how wonderful they looked and just being very positive about them. It was all about the kids.

My daughter gets anxious before she performs and sometimes it can get hairy, but she is in heaven when she gets off the stage, and this last time she was perfect while getting ready. She LOVED the glitter makeup and curls in her hair. I also think that the team she is on has an effect on her. They are getting closer as the weeks go on, and so far, the moms I have met from the team are great and that helps alot also. You know how that can get.

If she is interested, try it. The only complaint I have is the cost. But if she wasn't dancing, she would be bowling or playing soccer, or something wtih fees so either way we are going to have to pay for something.
