Evacuees Feel Duped By 'Nagin Special'

As evacuees headed for New Orleans from Houston and Galveston Mayor Ray Nagin said,

"We have 13,000 to 15,000 hotel rooms that are available for anyone from Texas to come here, and just ask for the Mayor Ray Nagin special rate."

Then when people arrived the hotel owners and managers knew nothing about it.

The official response from the mayor's office was:

Nagin issued a statement saying the comment was a joking remark and an "attempt to lighten the mood."

All I can say is this man is a terrible joke and should be run out of office. Can anyone tell me why this man was re-elected after the Katrina fiasco? What a jerk!

Because everyone blamed President Bush and not the Democrat mayor nor the Democrat governor.

Louisiana before, during, and after Katrina shows what happens when people (even in government) expect others to do for them instead of doing for themselves.

I agree heartily that he should be run out of office (also out of town, out of the state, and out of the country). He probably got re-elected because he blamed GWB and FEMA for everything that went wrong and promised the world to those who were there at election time. Remember "Chocolate City?" At least the state got rid of the incompetent governor.

He got re-elected because former residents of New Orleans who were evacuated but made no plans on coming back, were allowed to vote in the election.

That being said, do we really care what he says anyways?

Well when people have had their home devestated and are looking for an affordable place to stay it seems like a pretty cruel joke to be told to "ask for the Nagin special".

Frankly, I believe it was pretty stupid for anyone to take that fool seriously to begin with but that doesn't make his statement any less thoughtless and cruel.

What happened is there were too many candidates in the primary that diluted the vote. He and Mitch Landrieu were in the runoff election. The Landrieu's are old New Orleans politics and a big part of the problem. Nagin was term limited so he got elected to limit the damage to 4 years instead of getting stuck with 8 from a known politically corrupt family. Nagin is an idiot but he's not a crook.

Boy, is that ever a sorry state of affairs! A choice between an idiot and a crook. But I guess for Louisiana that should be like the days of Huey Long. What a shame people keep electing these politicians. Seems like Jindal (sp?) is pretty good though.
