Hi I am thnking of HS my granddaughter We are in NC and I have been her nannie for the past two yr, never in a day caer I have a early ed degree from FL it has been 4 yr that ,I was in a class room (Which is easy teach compared to HS) How or where do I get a list of the things I should be preparing her for to start school in a few years She is 4 1/2 and very bright, we watch Noggin and go to story time weekly . She is very Coumpute Literty, Works on line with games etc from PBS etc She attends small church and we read daily. any help would be great thanks ! We started on letters and sounds and know shape .colors,etc. We do a lot of on hands as coking, nature things!

Is she reading at all yet? If she is ready to begin sounding words out on her own, I would get a cookie sheet and magnetic letters to put small words together and help her sound them out, then read books that have those sounds in them. I liked this method for my children. We also played matching games with small words like bug, rug, cat, etc., once they had learned the sounds that correspond with those letters. I wrote the words on index cards. If you don't know how the matching/memory game works, this is what you do. Place all the cards face down in a grid. Lift two cards up to see if they match. If they do match, that player keeps the match. If not, she turns it back over. When they are quite little, like your gd, it also works to leave the cards up and when she lifts a card, she looks to see if it matches any of the cards facing up. If not, she can turn over another card. This sounds too easy, but for someone who is still sounding out words, it's not, as she will be trying to match cards that she has to really think about whether they match or not.
Lots of exploration play is good. Nature walks where you examine plants, bugs, etc. Trips to the zoo. Easy science experiments. I wouldn't get into too much form academics yet. Keep it to games like math games, rather than more formal work. Children learn better that way for the most part and will retain it. If you present information in a way that they feel like they are playing a game or playing outside, they will absorb it well and it increases their thinking skills. With my children, I started them in Math-U-See in first grade. Math-U-See is a math program that I love. My kids enjoy it too.

HJ,
I am in NC. You do not say if you are going to continue to homeschool after she reaches compulsory school age(7 in NC) but I am gonna go ahead and post the homeschool requirements in NC for you.
State law states:

Maintain attendance and immunization records and results of standardized tests
Testing:
Administer an annual standardized test measuring achievement in English grammar, reading, spelling, and mathematics, the results of which must be available for inspection

As for what to do for now- Play is her best learning environment. You can label everything- that was always fun. Matching games & coloring sheets. My children all thought that workbooks were fun activity books not actual school work.
Fun beginning learning to read books are the BOB Books- most libraries have them in the children's department(least the 4 or 5 I have visited in 3 states have all had them). You can look ahead and have some fun worksheets that contain the vowel sound in the book or really just spend and entire day/week talking about the sound the vowel makes.
PreK and K are fun ages.
