I have a friend who is a single mom with two girls, 4 and 6. Until recently she has been 'waiting' for a man to swoop in and help her with discipline problems, and such with her unruly children. Now she realises that she needs to stop waiting for her prince to come and take care of the situation herself.

What are some ideas she can use to incorporate the girls into chores, respect, manners, stuff like that?

I know this is broad, but I even though I am a fairly strict parent, I do have more liberal ideals than she does and so I wanted to get opinions from others as well. Just some things that I can suggest to her that she can work with and see what works.

At this point some counseling about parenting for Mom might be a good idea.

The Lord bless you as you help your friend... And may He also keep your friend as she "takes the bull by the horns" to make the right steps to raise her sweeties.

For chores, when my children (now teens) were small, I drew very simple pictures of chores (a toothbrush for brushing teeth, a pillow for neatening the bed, a cat for feeding the cat, a plate for clearing your place at the table, and so on & so forth...your friend can have fun with creativity) on index cards. I would put one descriptive word on the cards, too. Then, two or three times a day (after breakfast, after lunch, at bedtime), I would sing-song in a fun voice something like, "Time to help Momma." I would hand out the age-appropriate chore cards to each child, and they'd go do the chores. Of course, I had to have first trained them patiently bit by bit over a few days and each time there was a new chore card. Once a week or two, I'd slip in a reward card, too, with a picture of an icecream cone, or the word "zoo", or a drawing of a stick figure at a park. These would be their "payment" for work well done (which of course sometimes meant they didn't complain for the first time finally). So, there's one chore idea. This one worked for me, but I'm sure others will have other good ideas.

Bless you!

Psalm 63:1-8 (ESV)
O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your power and glory. Because Your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You. So I will bless you as long as I live; in Your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise You with joyful lips, when I remember You upon my bed, and meditate on You in the watches of the night; for You have been my help and in the shadow of Your wings I will sing for joy. My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.

Parenting class would be of help to your friend. I would think she should be able to find them at little to no charge if money is a problem.
