ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A volcano erupted Saturday with little warning on a remote island in Alaska, sending residents of a nearby ranch fleeing from falling ash and volcanic rock. The Okmok Caldera erupted late Saturday morning, just hours after seismologists at the Alaska Volcano Center began detecting a series of small tremors. The explosion flung an ash cloud at least 50,000 feet high, said geophysicist Steve McNutt. Story continues

Oh, the horror of it; imagine the carbon footprint of the event. About half that of albore flying somewhere on his private jet.

(Mar 13:8) For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows. Thanks RC

I thought this was interesting because I haven't heard of any volcanic eruptions up there recently.

Let's fine Alaska for allowing such a thing to happen! What were they thinking. Couldn't they just put a filter on it? I was wondering why it felt warmer today....or is that because it's summertime?

I think we can say with a high degree of certainty that this volcano is the result of global warming.

If I remember right, it's seismically about the most active place on the planet. It was nice of God to put it someplace where it wouldn't do much damage ;)

Alaska is part of the Ring of Fire seismic band going around the Pacific Ocean Rim. It comes up the Andes, through Central America, the San Andreas Fault in the Sierra Nevadas, through Alaska, and around to Japan, the Phillipines, Indonesia, and Polynesia. Antarctica has a huge dormant volcano buried under 2 miles of glacial ice. The Yellowstone area in Wyoming has been called a super caldera which could wreak massive destruction over the entire North American continent if it were to erupt. Humbling to consider, is it not?

I might be wrong but I think they have more large earthquakes in the area of Indonesia and Polynesia (that particular portion of the Ring of Fire that PaleHawkWoman pointed out) due to the collision of many different plates. In CA we're waiting for Mammoth mountain to erupt since it is a dormant volcano. They've had a lot of tremors their at times which made the locals skittish one year. That would make the skiers very though! Unless you're into the new extreme sport of lava skiing or lava boarding!
