Anybody been keeping up with this? On one of the writers' websites that I frequent a woman who lives in Reno says things are getting worrisome. She said they've recorded over one hundred tremors in the area in just the last week, many of them five points plus on the Richter scale. To make matters worse, she said they're increasing in intensity. Now I know these things usually have a way of settling down after a bit, but still...pretty scary.

There are always alot of tremors in that area but I put a link to a NY Times article about it below. If you want to see the numbers for yourself go to www.usgs.gov and look under "recent california earthquakes". I'll take an earthquake, even a big one, over a hurricane or tornado anyday! Of course, it could be related to volcanic activity or a precurser to a really big one. NY Times Article

Yes there have been several temblors but none of them over 5.0 mostly 3.0 or less www.earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Maps/US2/39.41.-121.-119.php I am on a alert network for earthquakes of 5.0 at the USGS and they have not notified me of any in the Reno area. As I glance at the history of the Reno area I note that it is near the volcanic areas of the Sierras (Mammoth Lakes area) and that is probably what is causing these quakes. Yes there have been quakes just today within a couple of hours of now.

It is unusal for Reno to be getting them. At least since I have been up here (1981). Lake Tahoe area gets them quite frequently and Reno is not far from Tahoe to the east. I live about an hour down the Sierras from Tahoe on the other side of the mountain (west ) in California. There are fault lines up here that they don't even know exist and, I am certain, all up and down the west coast.

Having experinced both it's better that the tectonic stresses be relieved by a bunch of 5.0's rather by a 7.0 or higher. But still less people in the US have died in earthquakes in the latter half of the 20th into the 21st centuries (1950-Present) than have died as the result of hurricanes and tornados. And the eastern portion of the US is not immune as evidenced by the New Madrid quake of 1811 that reversed the flow of the Mississippi River and changed its course. New Madrid Quake Info
