As far as I know we have not had a thread for the Southern Gospel Music Association before so I thought I would start one.

How many of you belong to the SGMA?

For those who do, how many of you send in suggestions each year for the Hall of Fame?

For members and non-members, who would you like to see in the SGMA Hall of Fame that is not in there yet?

Should the SGMA follow the lead of the GMA Hall of Fame and induct entire groups or should they continue to induct only individuals?

How many of you have visited the SGMA Hall of Fame at Dollywood?

That should be enough questions for now to get a good discussion started.

I have yet to see anything that the SGMA does other than have a Hall of Fame and a museum of sorts at Dollywood.

Was a member for several years, voted and so forth. At some point I let my membership lapse and have never renewed it. I like inducting individuals but the group concept is certainly worth exploring. From a personal viewpoint it is ieasier to identify who actually is part when it is just and individual. When a group is inducted it would be possible (I guess) to have sung with a group for a few months, had no major impact on the group and still use the 'former member of SGMA Hall of Fame group __________" in your advertising and quest to get yourself bookings.

I believe that the Hall of Fame was one of the main objectives of SGMA. They maintain the Hall Of Fame in Dollywood preserving the heritage of Southern Gospel Music. I'm proud to be a member of SGMA. Where else can you go and find the history of Southern Gospel Music preserved in a museum.

If you will take time to review the SGMA website you will find the following purpose stated:
THE PURPOSE OF THE SGMA IS TO MAINTAIN A SOUTHERN GOSPEL MUSIC HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM FOR THE HISTORIC PRESRVATION OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR MUSIC, ITS PEOPLE AND ITS MINISTRY.
WE BELIEVE SHOUTHERN GOSPEL MUSIC IS THE MUSICAL ARM OF OUR LORD'S EVANGELIST CHURCH, WITH REGARD TO DENOMINATION. THEREFORE, IT IS OUR JOB TO USE ALL MEANS AVAILABLE TO US TO PRAISE AND SPREAD THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST THROUGH SOUTHERN GOSPEL MUSIC.

Excellent comments, Mr. York.

Unfortunately, the SGMA does not have a large endowment to keep it afloat. The SGMA depends upon the generosity of those of us who appreciate the history that it honors. Those $20 memberships are necessary to keep the SGMA operating. In return for your donation, you receive two CDs featuring members of the Hall of Fame.

There are salaries to pay and upkeep necessary for the various exhibits. Dollywood is gracious in housing the museum, but they don't underwrite the ongoing expenses that it incurrs.

Mr. GospelProducer, the SGMA keeps the museum running and also produces an excellent day of gospel music in October in which they induct new members into the Hall of Fame. If you've never attended one of these productions, then you are missing a great event geared toward the history of gospel music.

I'm sure the SGMA would love to have a museum on the scale of the Baseball Hall of Fame, but the funding is simply not available. It has been a difficult task to have bronze plaques donated for the inductees. Many members of the hall of fame do not have benefactors to defray the cost of their plaques. I'm appalled when I see some of the members without bronze plaques in the hall of fame.
http://www.sgma.org/benefactors.htm

Yes, you guessed it! I am a member of the SGMA. I try to visit the Hall of Fame each year to see the new exhibits that are rotated in and out of the Hall of Fame. I also do a little volunteer work with the SGMA.

I'll save my comments about individuals I'd like to see in the Hall of Fame for another post.

It always grates my cheese when I hear someone complain that " . . . the hall of fame folks are crazy for not inducting . . . . " (you can fill in the blanks).

I always respond with the question, "Are you a member of the SGMA? If you pay your dues, then you have a right to complain and you also have a right to nominate. Otherwise, please join the SGMA or keep your complaints to yourself."

You know it hurts me to see several folk listed as needed that are true pioneers in this business. I'm also a little bothered that I let my membership lapse, it is important and the cost is low, it's just a small detail that got overlooked.

But I can correct that easy enough and plan to do so! Every every fan on the forums and every SGM performer joined, the $$ would be there to take care of the things needed.

I usually try to renew my subscription at NQC. They always have a booth set up there. I always get a reminder in the mail, but like to go by the booth. Sometimes they have a booth set up at World Premier in PF and I've renewed it there. Carol and myself both belong. Only $40.00 for the two of us and its for a VERY WELL WORTH CAUSE. Wish more would take the time to join and support them. If you are ever at Dollywood you should go by the Hall of Fame and see for yourself what your money does. There are thousands of people that go through there every year that know nothing about our music.

I am not a member at present time but have been. SGMA does a good job and has an EXCELLENT museum. Sorry to see a post that does not agree with that but everyone can have their own opinion. But we need to build it up, not tear it down.

God Bless the SGMA.

I've been a member of SGMA for a number of years & always nominate HOF members. I've never seen the HOF due to distance but would love to someday.

Well, i just went to the SGMA website and put in my 1 year subscription. I had been a charter member for the first few years, but then let it lapse after time. I guess its time to go back and sign up.

I heard this comment, I'm not sure of it's accuracy but I think it is fairly accurate 'If everyone who has been a member of the SGMA all signed up at the same time, there were be a HUGE membership but folks seem to do it for a few years, they let it slide, then get reminded again and sign back up'.

Maybe this will remind all of us to not let it slide next time!

I was shocked too, Lynn. Hovie and Mosie Lister, Big Chief, most of the Speer family, Anthony Burger? Wow.

I really thought Anthony had one. I wonder how often they update the list.

I'm a member too but I have not yet had the opportunity to visit the Hall of Fame.

As far as who I would like to see get into the Hall, Cecil Blackwood and Sam Goodman spring to mind and I plan to nominate Cecil next year. As far as inducting entire groups into the Hall, I'm not sure yet. It would be nice to see influential groups like the Statesmen, Blackwood Brothers, and the Cathedrals in there but I'm still not sure if I like the idea.

Having worked at the museum, my opinion is that most of the financial problems are due to mismanagement from the former managers. Not Charlie Waller. My only complaint about Charlie, and it is minor, is that he seems to favor the male quartets over the mixed groups and/or women.

He's using two mixed groups at the Induction Ceremony.

It is not that he NEVER uses mixed groups, he does, but if you are around him much or talk to him at all, there is no doubt that he favors the all male quartet. That's ok, a lot of folks are like that and at one time I truly was more of a fan of the male quartet that anything, but in recent years my tastes have broaden to include trios (male, female and mixed) as well as mixed groups.

Oh Mark. And to think I used to like you.

And Dee, thanks for backing me up. I was afraid I'd be tarred and feathered.

I have been to the Hall of Fame many times. I have also purchased many LPs from the SGMA to add to my collection. Individuals I would like to see in the HOF include Connie Hopper, Paul Downing, Ronny Hinson, Sam Goodman, Ed Hill, Duane Allen and I know many others that I am forgetting right now.

That is a good list. One I would add to it would be Claude Hopper!
