I don't mean that they're not good songs, but usually they are too long for radio. Ya know, most of the most ministering songs are too long for radio and a great blessing is missed by the masses! I know not every song ever recorded can be played on the radio, but some should and will/can not!

And YES, there are some that should never see the light of radio EVER!

What do ya think?

EDIT: Please feel free to mention any songs that have never made it to radio but you feel powerfully minister.

Let's take for instance these songs: (I'm going to pick on Legacy Five--go figure!) :

But God (4:18)

Stay Close To Me (5:29)

Great great great songs, but 4-5 minutes long each. Isn't the limit like 3 minutes or so? Goodness, what we DON'T hear on radio and are missing!! Unless of course, we buy the CD.....

The Anchor Holds at 5:46 got a lot of airplay on area stations that play both SG & some CCM music but if my memory is correct most of the times I heard it it was requested by a listener.

Strange thing is, it went to radio quite by "mistake", (another song from the same recording was actually to be the radio single) but it ended up on the charts anyway. Just a God Thing, I guess you'd say.

The actual time limit for songs that are aired is set by the individual radio stations. There is no hard and fast rule for it. I think it comes back to popular demand. If enough listeners want to hear a long song and will call and ask for it, then the station will put it on their play-list. If not, it probably won't happen.

Back in my younger days, many radio stations would play entire albums when a group would release a new one. That was done mainly to benefit the artist by enticing people to go out and buy the album. That was a different genre too - rock. I think SG stations should do the same thing. When L5, the Booth Brothers, EHSSQ, etc. release a new project, stations should play the entire thing. Sometimes you might find little gems on there that would normally not get radio air-play. And those little gems just might persuade someone to buy that project.

At least groups have the option these days to post 30-second clips on their website or on other's websites so you may find those little gems!

One that gets butchered on Radio, the few times I have heard it is "The Old Ship of Zion" from Chattanooga Live by the Kingsmen. They always end it after the first tenor part is over, before Ray talks about messin' up and then they redo the last 2 verses.

Days of Elijah, sung by Judy Jacobs, is 8.5 minutes long.

Our local 24 hour, all SG, FM station plays it every day between 6 and 7:00 p.m.

I think if a song truly ministers to people, you won't be paying attention to how long it is. For example, the Kingsmen's new single When God Ran is 5:12 - but it's such a good song you don't notice that you've been listening to it for five minutes! Plus, it has done very well on the Singing News charts . . . and I believe it's going to number one.

I think the radio stations like singles to be within the three minute mark because the DJ can play more music in an hour. But there are a load of songs out there that never get radio attention that can bring the house down!!!!!!

The smaller the station, the longer the songs. Do-it-all DJs need breaks, and naps.

That reminds me of our former local radio DJ who would put a CD on and let it play the entire way though while he walked to the store across the street to get a cup of coffee.

I often wonder how many dj's got locked out of the studio when then went to the restroom or someplace?

When I saw this thread I flashed back to the 60's and 20 minute songs.
