This thread is to look deeper at the meaning of the word heart in scripture. Please post scriptures pertaining to the heart and what it means. Together we will search for the Truth and may God open our eyes to the things He wants each one of us to take from it. I'll start with a definition from the NASB Master Study Bible:

"According to the Scriptures, all the operations of human life are centered in the heart: and the exhaustion of physical strength is called "melting" or "withering" of the heart. (Ps. 22:14, 15: 102:4). "Heart" and "Soul" are used interchangeably in the Bible, the heart being considered the center of soul-life as well as physical life. The heart is the seat of love, of hatred, of joy, or sorrow, of wisdom, and of pride."

Your turn!

In the Sermon on the Mount alone we learn that:

the pure in heart will see God ( Matt 5:8 )
we can sin in our heart without action (Matt 5:28)
where our treasure is, there our heart is also ( Matt 6:21)

also...

... out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. (Matt 12:34)

God knows our hearts (Acts 1:24) so we cannot hide,

and

the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. ( Matt 13:19 )
but God will guard our hearts (Phil 4:7)

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" Jer 17:9

In this passage the word "heart" in the Hebrew is leb... it more-so refers to the mind... the feelings, will or intellect.

Blessings...

This is how we are to love God according to Matt.22:37. "Love the Lord your God with all your HEART and with all your soul and with all your mind."

It is by believing and totally trusting in what Jesus has done for us on the cross. It is by believing with all our HEART (soul, mind, feelings and intellect) that we are saved according to Rom..10:10. We will then express what`s in the heart with our mouth either verbally or by our lifestyle. "For it is with the HEART that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved."

Once we`re saved the Holy Spirit indwells us and leads us in accordance to the peace or lack of peace we may have about our situation in our HEARTS. Phil.4:7 states "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your HEARTS and minds in Christ Jesus."

Is anything greater than or hearts? "This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our HEARTS at rest in His presence whenever our HEARTS condemn us. For God is greater than our HEARTS, and He knows everything." (1 John 3:19+20) God is greater than our hearts.

This is a very good study. I did this a few years ago and was amazed at the number of different words and meanings the word "heart" has.

Heart in both the Hebrew and Greek can also mean middle, or center of something:

lêb
labe
A form of H3824; the heart; also used (figuratively) very widely for the feelings, the will and even the intellect; likewise for the centre of anything: - + care for, comfortably, consent, X considered, courag [-eous], friend [-ly], ([broken-], [hard-], [merry-], [stiff-], [stout-], double) heart ([-ed]), X heed, X I, kindly, midst, mind (-ed), X regard ([-ed)], X themselves, X unawares, understanding, X well, willingly, wisdom.

G2588
καρδία
kardia
kar-dee'-ah
Prolonged from a primary κάρ kar (Latin cor, “heart”); the heart, that is, (figuratively) the thoughts or feelings (mind); also (by analogy) the middle: - (+ broken-) heart (-ed).

for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
(Mat 12:40 NASB)

Pro 4:23 Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it {flow} the springs of life.

My commentary says this, " The mind is the fountain from which the actions spring. If the fountain is pure, the stream that flows from it will be pure. As a man thinks, so he is." Believer's Bible Commentary

Did a quick reference study in Crosswalk tools and found that the term 'heart' appears 765 times in the whole Bible (i.e. in the KJV - other versions may vary).

OT = 666 times
NT = 99 times

The term 'heart' appears most in the Wisdom Books = 266 times and least in the General Epistles = 6 times and Apocolyptic Books = 6 times

I thought it was interesting that the term 'heart' appears most often in the OT but don't know if there is any significance in this?

I have also heard that when the bible was written that they did not use heart as the center of emotions and feelings but they said bowels

Mt 5:8 (NASB w/Strongs)
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

hear the Greek word "kardia" is used for "heart"

quote:

Steong's 1st & 2nd definitions of "kardia":
the heart
that organ in the animal body which is the centre of the circulation of the blood, and hence was regarded as the seat of physical life
denotes the centre of all physical and spiritual life ...

Sometimes they used the word for "kidneys," but the word studies I have done show that "heart" was used as well as a seat for emotions, feelings, the soul and the mind- the last two being the surprise for me, as I have always been taught that the heart, mind, and soul were three totally separate things. Through studying the heart, I have come to believer they are intertwined. See below for more specific "proof."

Little_1- I do think it's significant that heart is used more in the OT than the NT for two reasons: 1. They weren't indwelt by the Holy Spirit like we are, so specific instructions needed to be given to believers on guarding the heart. They didn't have the help we have. 2. The God of the OT was full of grace and wanted love from the believers. I think the longing God spoke of for the Israelite's heart is proof that God of the OT wasn't just wrathful, but is that same loving God today as He was then.

I'm finally ready to start this thread and found you'd already started, DD. Thanks!

Here's a bit of what I found when I studied the heart and emotions. There's loads of info on how the heart is connected to emotions and how both God can change our heart and man can change his heart. I encourage you to take a concordance and observe everything the Bible says about the heart and feelings, because it is eye-opening. The most comprehensive passage I found was Proverbs 2-7. There were two surprises for me- 1. heart, mind, soul are often interchangeable words and 2. Man can change His heart. I've always been taught that only God can change the heart... but that's not what the Bible says. My formatting won't hold, so it's a little difficult to read. Sorry about that. I tried!

d)Heart and actions connected (Ex25:2, Ps 101; Eccl 7:7, 10:2, Rev 2:23)
e)Heart can be good or bad (Gen 6:5, 8:21, 20:5, 2 Kings 10:15, 1 Chron 29:17; Prov 28:26)

i)Man can change heart (Lev 26:41, 1 Chron 16:10, Ps 69:32, 78:8, Jer 4:4, John 14:27)

2)Changing the mind and actions leads to feelings changing.
a)God strengthens what’s in heart (Ps 10:17, 81:12)
b)Man can strengthen heart (Deut 10:16, Ps 27:14)
c)Actions/ thoughts of self or others affect heart (Deut 11:16, 20:8, 1 Kings 11:2-12:26, Jer 4:18; Mt
