Story in the Houston Chronicle here I just heard about this today, but apparently the requirement went into effect Oct. 1? Fellow Texans, what do you think?

It is about time we did this, and I can't wait for LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) and MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense Fund) to start protesting and using the racist card for letting this pass.

What baffles me is that someone had to make a new law to state that if you aren't supposed to be in the US you can't have a drivers liscense.

Next thing you know they'll be passing laws stating that people who aren't supposed to be in this country aren't supposed to be in this country, and then things will really start looking up. ;)

Texas has done the right thing. I wish North Carolina would do the same. We're getting overrun with illegals here.

ORIGINAL: 3cappuccinosmom I really don't understand how anyone could have a problem with it. Though of course, I'm sure there will be some. Did the article say what Americans must "present" when getting a driver's license to PROVE they are indeed "citizens" and have "legal status"? I'll have to check out the Texas DPS website and find out... SOME Texans just might go up to get their licenses, then have to present a stack of documents to prove U.S. citizenship/"legal status".....and, I can see it now...someone putting it all down and yelling, "Can't you SEE that I am an American!!!!" (while pointing at themselves) if only it were that simple, huh?

The requirements tend to be pretty simple. Birth certificate, naturalization papers, or legal residence papers. Not a big deal, really.

As a Texas export... it's about freaking time that somebody did this. With everybody scrambling to get a passport so they can travel to the Carribbean, it shouldn't be a problem for American Citizens to prove that they are American Citizens. Here's a no brainer... ask for a Birth certificate or US Passport prior to issuing a Government approved ID. DUH! Adam

You mean they were able to be legal drivers without being a legal citizen? I had no idea.

There is no reason why someone who has entered the U.S. illegally ought to be given 'legal' documentation such as a driver's license, car insurance, etc. Whether that makes life harder for those individuals or not isn't much of an issue since they are not using legal channels to accomplish their goals of American residency or citizenship. So, I agree with that, even though I have known some people who have struggled to get here and are here illegally -- and they are wonderful people who I want to help. Still, breaking the law is breaking the law, and the government ought not be in the business of making law-breaking easier.

You've obviously checked their documentation! Or is it the "everybody knows that they are" argument? IOW, personal opinion.

Yeh, sure, I go around checking green cards. Keeps me real busy, I gotta tell ya. When my little town gets flooded with "people who speak Spanish" in just a few years, I (and many others) have got to question their legal status. Nearly every week, there's a fatal automobile accident in the area in which an illegal "person with a Spanish name" is arrested for DUI. But then, who am I to comment........... And my apologies to the legal people of Spanish descent if I sound prejudiced. I'm not. I just think that if someone is here illegally, regardless of their color, ancestry and country of origin, they should not be granted the same rights and privileges as the rest of us. quote:

How dare a city in the US actually require proof of LEGAL status! Who do they think they are? Clearly this is nothing but racial hatred and intolerance. Just ask a liberal, they'll tell you.

ORIGINAL: stellaluna I support it. This is dumb: quote:
But Jim Harrington, director of the Texas Civil Rights Project, said the policy change is a bad idea because illegal immigrants are going to drive anyway. "People have to drive to get to work. You want people to get (auto) insurance. They can't get insurance if they don't have a driver's license," he said. Is he serious that law-breaking illegal immigrants are breaking their necks to get car insurance? Ahahahaha...hahahaha...hahahaha... We've got plenty of US citizens who drive without a license or insurance, either. Other countries require proof of legal residence to attend school, work, obtain a driver's license (and their licensing tests are WAY more rigorous than ours), get married, or obtain social, legal, and health care services. And you can bet that they also deport illegals as soon as they surface-children in tow or not. I don't understand why we should't do as much. We should also make the penalties for driving w/o a license or insurance much stiffer. Had some idiot wreck in front of the house on Monday. He totaled the car he was driving (belonged to a family member- he was driving to the gas station mini-mart to get some more beer), damaged a telephone pole, and took off before the cops got there. The family member, who ran down to cover for him, tried to say she was driving the car, but when the officer questioned me as a witness I told the police what I saw, described the dude and related what he said when we ran over to check on him. The family member cussed at me and said I should have minded my own business. Turns out this is his second wreck this year on the pike and he had no license/insurance then, either. Lost his license forever after multiple DUI's. I hope he gets a year in jail. Maybe with the economic crisis, many of the illegals will go back home for better economic opportunity. They can take their horrendous driving habits with them.
