Anyone see this movie, with Robert Duvall, Farrah Faucet? I strongly recomend it. I've seen it a couple times, and I thought it was beautiful.
The hymns themselves in the movie are worth watching it for. But the story is one I don't think I'll ever forget.
If you have seen this movie, did you enjoy it? What did you take from it?
I was able to relate to both the Apostle and the wife, and the towns people. And I liked how the apostle was far from perfect. He was very objectionable in some ways, yet he had a gift and continued to use it in the hardest times of his life.
He did'nt wallow in self pity, or beat himslef up. He just cried out to God, brushed himslef off, and moved on with the Lords work. I think in that situation, I would have felt so estranged from God and overwhelmed with guilt, I would have given up. What do you all think?

I love the movie and the soundtrack. BTW Robert Duvall wrote the screenplay, and starred in it and directed it.

Yes, outstanding story. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Didn't quite find Billy Bob Thornton believable, but all the other characters were great, especially June Carter Cash. kd

Definitely a classic!!! Loved Steven Curtis Chapman's cut. I had the video for my show... I also met and interviewed Ruby Terry who was in the movie.

It's weird, it sort of mocks us Evangelical Christians but also gives you a true understanding into how we think and how we feel and relate.

He was a flawed man, but had a good heart, he made mistakes, and his church had faults as we all do.

We have to work to overcome . . . an honest look and an Evangelical Christian today, we are flawed, but we love our LORD JESUS and he loves us.

I don't think it mocks Christians of any type. It's one of the few Hollywood movies that doesn't and takes people of faith seriously.

And the Patriarchs were perfect people too? Sure?

I loved on how the movie depicted a deeply flawed but still committed individual.

Kinda like King David!

Amen! I saw that movie a couple of times, and thought Duvall did a wonderful job...his solitary moments of crying out to God were special, as were the messages he preached (one of these days I'll be leaving, not from an airport).

God can use one in the pulpit as well as the prison.

What do you think is mocking?

1. When he was praying in the Hotel room talking about his anger and being with "some"women. Sort of the stereotype about us Christian men we love the LORD and "chicks."

2. When he kills the guy at the ball game and instead of calling for an ambulance or practicing CPR folks are over him praying saying, "Raise the dead, Raise the dead."

That was mocking . .. .

Stereotypes are based on reality. Unfortunately, we give too much fodder for them. You have current televangelists divorcing, beating their wives and/or cheating on them.

I don't get that at all. I seriously doubt anyone would go to that movie and leave with the conclusion that all Christian men love the Lord and chicks.
As to the ambulance scene I can show you a dozen or so churches around my hometown that would do the same thing.
I still don't think that it was mocking. The vast majority of the people, while flawed (like real human beings) were portrayed as having sincerely held beliefs.

It was really good acting, however I really do not think that the movie was good on the whole though. It gives Christians a bad name and I do not see that as a good thing at all.

I see it as one of those, if you are a Beliver you will see the positive in it as a Believer. If you are not, you will see what you want to disbelieve or mock.

Agreed. I see how God can use anybody or anything for His will, however I really do not think that the movie was a good witnessing tool though.

This movie was very well done, but Duvall's character disturbed me very much, even after the point of his character's turn-around and rebuilding.

I don't think that it was a mocking movie, though - how do you show someone who has issues in their life and is a minister without showing a minister with issues?? The connection with Christianity is undoubtedly there, but I don't think viewers are supposed to draw conclusions about the Christian community on the whole through viewing these folks' problems.
