Good morning, Barb. Sounds like you had a great weekend! I'm sure Cody wouldn't have appreciated you running down there to check on him, but I can understand the effort it must have taken for you to not go. I take it he's ok now?? All your sisters together must have been very nice. Do you all get to do that very often? Kids get such a bang out of a camp-out . . . but yeah, I would have a hard time making it on one of those air mattresses these days We joined a bunch of my family on the river -- 4 of my sisters were there, but only one of my brothers. Several of their kids and grandkids, tho, so it was quite a large bunch. When we got home that night -- after 11:00, we found a note from Melissa & Billy. Seems they came down just for the evening to wish her dad happy birthday, but failed to check with us before deciding this, couldn't reach us by phone, so decided to take a chance and drive on down, being quite sure we wouldn't be far from home . . . . why do our kids assume we don't have a life without them????? . . . . we were really sorry to have missed them, tho -- it'd been nearly 3 months since we'd seen them. When we finally reached them Sunday morning, we just decided to get in the car and go up there. Of course, it was noon before we decided this, so we didn't get there until around 3:00. We spent the night, tho, so it worked out fine, and we had a really good time. Last night when we got back we had a call on our answering machine from our good friends wanting to get to gether to play cards, so we called them & asked them to come on out. We made it an early evening tho, them being very conscious of our being gone all weekend and that Bill needed some rest. All in all, it was a pretty full weekend for us not having anything big planned . . . . . now Garrett is here and I think he & I will go back outside and do some trimming . . Bill told me if I don't get the English Ivy off the side of the house he will do it for me . . . I think I'd rather do it myself, TYVM!

That's great that you camped out with Cody, Barb! He'll remember that you did that for him. We used to have everyone "sleep under the stars" about once a year for a few years. In our back yard. Sounds like you had a good weekend Leah! From last week's thread. Maggie, that's exciting about your son; I know you'll miss him but it's great that you are excited for him and supportive. And yay for your other son getting a job! Leah, we have Uno attack, well my middle daughter does. It is fun. My then 2 and 8 year old used to try to play it together and that was, well, they needed some supervision. But yep, it's fun! Yesterday was my middle daughter's birthday; she turned 14. She is such a neat kid. I remember how stubborn she could be when she was little. She once missed a trip to McDonald's (a big deal for her at the time) because she didn't want to wear a certain coat. I'm not sure why I picked that battle now that I think about it. Dee

Barb, Was it neat to snuggle with Ethan under the stars other than getting comfortable on the air mattress? When we would go camping we had a eggshell mattress pad we would put on the air mattress and comforters. The last time hubby and I went camping with the kids was 16 years ago. I was pregnant and the day after we got back I started miscarrying. If I had had that baby I would never had had my youngest son. He was conceived 5 months later. I had a cook out with family this weekend too my adult kids and their families. I wish I could visit with my sisters. They live in Florida and Texas and very rarely see them. I am glad you have yours around you Barb. Zak's highschool separates the sophomores from the juniors and seniors and only a couple ever get to play on varsity. Zak didn't play Friday our first varsity game. Cody sounds like he is doing great in football. And Barb if it was me I probably wouldn't have had the self-control you showed and had gone done to investigate when my son got hurt. Don't know maybe I would but don't think so. Leah WOW You did a lot this weekend! It's a shame you missed Melissa when she came down though but am glad you did get a chance to see her and the girls. Hi Dee. Happy Birthday to your middle daughter. Fourteen. That's the age my daughter rebelled and wouldn't listen to me at all. I love your comment your 14 year old is a good kid, stubborn but good. My 15 year old son is the same way. He's stubborn but he isn't rebellious and it's great. I don't know what temperature it was in Missouri but I do know I got HOT at work today. Ginny

Well, I posted in here earlier this afternoon, and my internet was acting up so I lost it. Happy late birthday to your daughter, Dee! It's funny how those stubborn personalities can surprise us . . usually the other direction tho, so it's real good to hear she has improved & that you & her have a good relationship at 14. Barb, I'm glad Cody was ok. I'm not sure I could have stayed away either, but they sure wouldn't appreciate us going to them . . . the weather was actually decent over trhe weekend -- Saturday was beautiful in fact. Sunday and Monday got progressively hotter, but I just stayed in the a/c. It was supposed to get to 92 today, and near that tomorrow, with t-storms coming in tomorrow sometime, but it only got in the mid eighties today, I think. The heat index was higher tho. It was very humid, even sprinkling a bit when the buses got here at 3:45. And we're getting the t-storms tonight. Not sure it is raining yet, but sure has been cuttin' a shine out there. Bill, good to see you here -- don't make yourself so scarce! The kids & I baked cookies today . . . Eddie helped me and Garrett helped lick the beaters and bowl . . and of course we all helped eat them! . . . Garrett was so funny licking the beaters, tho . . . . . . I also got a little bit of sewing done . . will do more tomorrow.

I have been asked to teach Children's church for the month of September. I said yes. It's kinda late notice for this Sunday so I need to go by the church and pick up the curricula today. I am finally recovering from the physical changes to quitting smoking. The overwhelming fatigue is going away and I am beginning to get into a routine again. I do start my day off with coffee now and end it with coffee too. I thought I would be very busy with the new program this semester and though I can find work to do I am not as busy as I thought I would be. So I've begun to go through the student's files to update their records and purge the outdated inactive ones. Dee, I don't know if I've mentioned that I went to garage sales this past weekend. I found lots of bargains. At one they were selling brand new in the box Home and Garden things. I got 5 x-mas gifts for this. And they also had cedar boxes for .50 cents each. I got 3 but I would have gotten 6 more if a man hadn't started grabbing them the same time I did. He was fast and I was lucky to grab my 3. These cedar boxes make great jewelry boxes and can be engraved. I found a cookie mold set that I have always wanted to make rosette cookies. And a contraption that is used to take the corn kernels off ears of corn. Hubby needs that because he doesn't have teeth and this way I can get his corn off for him. I found an exercise set that is brand new with tapes, cassettes, exerciser, cookbook, and exercise book. That's my next goal is to increase my exercising and take off weight. There is more that I found and purchased. It was a good bargain hunt and I had a blast. Ginny

Good morning, Ginny & Barb. It looks like we're going to have rain all week -- won't find me complaining . . . the temp here is 73, dew point 68, humidity . . . . sticky, but not unbearable. Yeah Barb, I can't imagine any of us sitting still if they'd go down and not get up. Football can be so dangerous. John only played his last year of school -- that's when it was instituted in our school. I'm glad for that. I've been to the gym, then picked up Garrett & we went to Wal-Mart & bought him some new blocks. Now I need to get on the floor and play with him Sometime today I need to try changing my living room around one more time before we move the chaise lounge out of here.

Barb, I'm glad Cody is OK! Leah, the cookies sound yummy! Ginny, Yay for the garage sale finds! There weren't too many here this weekend; There's not always a lot to go to in our small town. My oldest daughter has been enjoying going with me, so that's nice. She missed out on a lot of garage sale-ing this summer. It turned cooler here too; had to find some long pants that weren't too short for my son to wear today. He couldn't find a hoodie he liked, so he left in just his t-shirt. I dug some jeans out; I hope some of them fit. He needs the slim size, and most of the ones I found weren't. I'll have to keep looking. Dee

Dee, my youngest son has several hoodies and he still doesn't always find one he likes. He is fortunate in that he has two older brothers who give him clothes. Ds2 loves clothes and buys them continuously. Ds2 and DIL have so many clothes they are planning on turning their guest room into a walk-in closet. They owned their own 3 bedroom home and right now one of the bedrooms is an office and one is a guest bedroom. Ds2 is tired of using the office for clothing overflow and wants just one room for all the clothes. Every so often he brings over a bag of clothes for my youngest son who doesn't always like the style Ds2 wears and can be picky on what he chooses from that bag. I've given lots of medium size men's clothes to the lady up the street for her family. And yet one of our greatest expenses has been in buying clothing for Ds3. Hubby has given him a money time after time to buy clothing. Mostly athletic wear. High school decal clothing is a budget expense I guess. We've had quite the expense in all the school expenditures last month and this month. The athletic fee, pictures, $100 for food card, mouth guard for football, class ring, etc. all add up in cost of beginning high school. The first class ring Ds3 wanted was $1000. Hubby told him to go lower so he wanted one that was $600. Hubby told me that is what they were purchasing. I gasped. I said go lower. DD came over and looked at the selections for class rings and looked for the one she got 9 years ago. Hers then was $69 but now they are $250 so a class ring is going to cost at least $300. We had to pay a down payment this week and then will be paying installments. I am so glad we don't have more children growing up in this day and age. I feel sorry for the parents who have the inflated prices and several children still. Barb, your cleaning is putting me to shame. I've been ignoring my own housework. But even though I have, my family is starting to come around to helping out. Hubby actually straightened the living room and threw away trash. Ds1 cooked meals and did laundry and my grandson helped with dishes. Please say a prayer for my dad. Dad is 85 and has been fighting a bug that won't go away. For 7 days last month he had IV antibiotic treatment in the home and then he got tested to see if the infection was cleared up. They called last week and said no that it had settled in his prostrate. And this week dad's testicle swelled up. He was hospitalized yesterday and the doctors are keeping him at least 2 weeks for more IV antibiotic treatment. Dad has cancer. While in the hospital he will be taking a cancer drug. His lymph nodes are enlarged and after this antibiotic treatment he will be taking a stronger dosage of chem. Please pray for him and for my mom. Mom and dad have some family in Mississippi but it is my aunt and dad's older aunts. They are mostly alone except for church family. They go to a great church so that family will probably be supportive. I just hate it that I am not close enough to visit and see them and help out. Mom is planning on staying at the hospital with dad as much as is possible. Mom and dad have been married for 60+ years. They are very close. They love playing dominoes together of an evening. Dad fixes mom breakfast and sometimes lunch. Both have always been very active people and are independent people. They don't complain about their troubles to their children nor ask us for help and they have helped me out quite a bit. I am not ready for dad to die.

Good morning Barb & Ginny. Barb, we're getting that slow, soaking rain also -- have been all night and a good part of yesterday as well. This has to have been the wettest summer we've had in longer than I can remember. Honestly (and I am NOT complaining), I think we've had less than a dozen days of temps above 90, and we've had a great deal of rain. I wouldn't mind it being like this all the time. The grass & weeds have been harder to keep up with, but man I so enjoy the cooler temps. Ginny, I'll remember your dad in prayer. That is so long for a couple to be together. YOur mom must be feeling quite anxious for him. I'll be praying for her also. Yes, kids & school can be quite expensive. I remember trying to buy all the things John 'needed' during that time. It was awful. We paid close to $300 for John's ring. He lost in playing football right after he went in the service. What a waste. Garrett & I played with the blocks for a while yesterday, then I got him to pick them up and put them in the toy basket. Then I took up all the rugs, moved the furniture and swept & mopped the floor. It started sprinkling before I got the rugs back inside, so I had to drape them everywhere to let them dry while I was at the OA meeting. I was soaked with sweat by the time I finished -- about 10:00 -- in spite of being in the A/C. I just had time left to feed Garrett and get him ready for the bus. Once he got on the bus, I had to rush to get my shower, then dry & curl my hair & get dressed for the meeting. My friend who helped start this OA chapter hurt her back over the weekend, so was unable to attend. I had to go by her house (she lives between me & town) to pick up some of the material, then try to get to the church by 12:30. I was about 10 minutes late, but the only other lady to show up, and the one who actually ran the meeting this time, was still in her car talking on the phone, so at least she wasn't waiting for me. We're hoping this group will grow quickly. Right now there are 6 active members, but 3 of them have not made it since we moved to the new location. It was really unfortunate that my friend hurt her back and is also not able to be there, but the other lady & I had a good talk yesterday anyway . . about attitudes, mainly, tho we went over several of the things in a little pamphlet entitled "Just For Today" they give us to carry in our purse. The group has a very good spiritual base, and I'm enjoying the information I'm garnering from it. After the meeting, I went by my friend's house again to drop her stuff back off and check on her. She's in a lot of pain . . if you all have time, please pray for Marianna. I barely pulled in the driveway when Garrett's bus pulled in behind me . . . they were about 20 minutes early. The busdriver assured me if she ever got there before me, she'd wait for me, and she has my cell phone number to call also. That should never happen, but it's good to know that just in case. Eddie came home a few minutes later. I fed him & Garrett cookies & milk, then put Garrett down for a nap while Eddie & I played some Rummikub. When he left at nearly 5:00, I fixed Bill & I some filet mignons for supper -- part of the package of food we got from the Angel Food Ministries -- and a baked potato. Garrett didn't care for that, and he was spending the evening with us, so he had a PB & J again. Then he & I went to church. It was a full day, and I'm ready to take it a little easier today.

Empty nest syndrome. I can't imagine feeling useless when my kids are all gone. But then, I've been working on finding me ever since I joined CW over 7 years ago and I think being part of CW has really helped. quote:
My dad is 72 years already. You can tell he's starting to slow down big time already. I worry about him alot. It was bad enough loseing my mom...I don't even wanna think about loseing him! My mom is 71. I worry about her developing Alzheimer's. So far she seems to be functioning very well. She preached at evangelistic services in the Ukraine last fall and since then has travelled to Mexico and Tobago (she didn't have to pay for accommodation in either place) so she's doing okay but sometimes I wonder, is she really? She took me out for lunch yesterday and we spent two hours watching the slides of her trips. There are some beautiful buildings in the Ukraine and Russia--buildings where the domes are covered in gold, buildings where the interior has intricate carvings/sculptures on the walls and they're covered with gold so that the room shines. Amazing!

Praying Ginny. I love hand-me-down and recycled clothes! But yes, somehow it's hard to find room for everything. Barb, I hope you and Pam can find something you'll enjoy in the evenings. Took my girls to an appt about 30 miles away for an appt for my middle girls possible jaw surgery. Did some shopping afterwards. All these appointments are getting expensive with going to Target and Wal-Mart when we are in town. Met hubby at the appt as it is where he works. So we came home separately. When we pulled in the driveway this evening I looked at R's empty carseat and, in a panic, I said "where is R?" I was sure we'd left her at Wal-Mart. I was also hoping one of her sisters had let her out of her carseat and she'd gone inside and I just didn't realize that she was already inside. But one of the girls said "she came home with dad." Phew. I still rushed in to see for myself though. I felt bad; my son hurt his knee in PE today, and had to walk home. I wish someone had called me. He had a sub and didn't think that any teachers realized he was hurt. He was sure hobbling around this evening though. I left town before school let out, but I'd have picked him up early if I'd have known. But even if I'd have been home I don't think he'd have called to tell me. Dee

You have an independent son, Dee! That must have been scary when you couldn't find your little one! Yikes!
