The recent events involving Russia has had me thinking of this movie lately. For those of you that are not familiar with it, it was a made-for-TV movie that aired on ABC in 1983. The purpose of the film was to show the effects a full scale nuclear war between the U.S and the then U.S.S.R. would have to hopefully help deter one from happening (there was a message at the end of the movie that more or less said if a nuclear war were to occur, the outcome would be much worse than depicted in the movie). I recall somewhat seeing some of this when it first aired although I was only about 10 at the time. My wife was not old enough when the movie aired to have remembered it. I found this on DVD about a year or so ago and bought it. Given the time it was made (no CGI used) and that it was a made-for-TV movie, the special effects are pretty good. Hopefully nothing like this will ever happen.

Here is a link to an interesting article from 2003 about the movie.

You know, Sci-Fi was airing this movie last fall I think. I watched it several times, even though my husband said it depressed him. (If he can watch The Phantom Menace every time it comes on, I can watch nuclear holocaust movies, right? )

The nuclear movie that stands out in my memory was called Testament. I have no idea what ever became of that one.

I can remember exactly where I was when that movie came out on TV.
My son was only 3 years old and I can remember going outside after watching it, looking at the sky and almost expecting to see a missile.

Did it make an impact on me?
You betcha it did.

I actually live near a nuclear weapons facility and I've always been glad of it. If anything happens we'll be dead first and we don't have to worry about anything else.

I saw it recently too.

I remember being back in Jr. High when I first saw this. I could barely sleep that night. Lying in bed I freaked out everytime I heard a plane go by and prayed I would live to at least see my 16th b'day. The next day in the girls locker room one girl was in tears talking about the movie and how scared she was about it too.

It didn't feel as scary to watch this time Still a little worrisome though.
