Interesting archeological find in Jordan
Jordan archaeologists unearth 'world's first church'
Archaeologists in Jordan have unearthed what they claim is the world's first church, dating back almost 2,000 years, The Jordan Times reported on Tuesday.
"We have uncovered what we believe to be the first church in the world, dating from 33 AD to 70 AD," the head of Jordan's Rihab Centre for Archaeological Studies, Abdul Qader al-Husan, said.
He said it was uncovered under Saint Georgeous Church, which itself dates back to 230 AD, in Rihab in northern Jordan near the Syrian border.
"We have evidence to believe this church sheltered the early Christians -- the 70 disciples of Jesus Christ," Husan said.
These Christians, who are described in a mosaic as "the 70 beloved by God and Divine," are said to have fled persecution in Jerusalem and founded churches in northern Jordan, Husan added.

Thank you, Jhud for the story! How exciting! It seems like there has been a recent increase with these very significant discoveries such as the above and King Herod's tombs, etc.

No, none of that, but there was some evidence there was a Starbucks in the lobby.
Did they serve imported Turkish coffee? I love that stuff even if it has the consistency of a cup of mud!
They obviously had to serve donuts with that coffee.

Of course there must have been contemporary music in the first church as well...I wonder if they prefered melodies from 200 years prior as many today prefer.

Where does scripture say that the "first church" held a congregation of only 70 disciples? In fact, doesn't the book of Acts record in 1:15 that the disciples numbered "about a hundred and twenty," in 2:41 that Pentecost converts increased that number by "about three thousand souls," and in 2:47 that "the Lord added daily" thereafter?

Well, as this church was in Jordan, it would appear these folks made their way from Jerusalem due to persecution there. But you would really have to ask the archeologists in this case.

I agree with you there, Jack. I think the place where the 120 were gathered was the site of the upper room in Jerusalem; the place where the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles. This site has not been located to this day although there is a place in Jerusalem that "commemorates" it.
They probably should have stated that it was the "earliest church" found to date not proclaim it as the oldest church. But then I guess archaeologists may not be immune to sensationalism, although I would attribute it more the the media reporting it!

It wasn't 230 AD - it was, " 33 AD to 70 AD".

Yes, my mistake. It was the St. Georgeous church that dates back to 230 AD.
As for the "70" figure, the tenth chapter of Luke's gospel does mention that Christ "appointed seventy others (disciples) also" to preach to the various cities that he was planning to visit. But the syntax suggests that these were 70 disciples in addition to the 12 apostles, and this was long before Pentecost when the church actually began as its own entity.
So, I'm still not sure why the first church would number only seventy. As a priest might say, "Well, it's a mystery . . . "

The most important spiritual questions from this find is....was there pews in this church, or chairs?
What color was the carpet?
Did they have a seperate room for the babies?
Was the podium made of wood? Stone? Metal?
Can they tell what the pastor's wife wore?
