We just saw 'The Happening' and boy is it NOT happening! Stupid, stupid story with lousy, lousy acting. It was a very long hour and half and not at all worth the $16.00 we spent. Rated R because they used several buckets of blood, but otherwise clean. Anyone agree? Disagree? If you've not seen it, check out the ratings on Fandango. Boy I wish we had. http://www.fandango.com/thehappening_103748/readuserreviews?status=1

I'm not one for scary movies -- except I did like the Sixth Sense. Very original. I doubt I would have seen this one, but after reading the reviews on your link... That's a definine Uh-uh. Thanks for the tip!

I was disappointed with The Village when I saw it the first time but we bought it and I watch it very often (every other week??). I really liked it, once I was over the 'it's not a monster' surprise and thought it through. I love Sixth Sense. Really enjoy Unbreakable. Signs is a favorite. We own all of those. I've not seen Lady in the Water because I heard too many say they didn't like it at all. I'm a real fan of M. Night, but what a disappointment this was. Diane

Signs is one of my favorite movies, and I've liked all of M. Night's movies. Even Lady in the Water wasn't that bad IMO. But I was disappointed in him for the way he allowed The Happening to be marketed. Every trailer emphasized how this was his first R rated film. I think he was trying to bounce back from the negative critical reviews he received the last couple of films by trying to follow the typical Hollywood formula for horror movies. Let's throw in more blood! I personally liked his earlier style (building suspense slowly and leaving much to the imagination), and I wish he didn't feel the need to cater to the critics by changing his style. Based on the reviews I've read, it didn't seem to help him much anyways. Maybe he should have been more concerned about pleasing his fanbase.

"The 6th Sense" was OK and I liked "Unbreakable" (his best film), but everything he's done since then has been varying degrees of awful, so I probably won't bother with "The Happening." That said, though, I think the critical backlash against him is a bit much at times. I think he's a competent director and he's very good at establishing moods -he's just a terrible writer and should quit writing his own films. His films seem to be becoming more absurd and unintentionally laughable as he goes along. I think he'd increase his standing in Hollywood again if he started directing other people's scripts, or allowed better writers to tackle ideas that he comes up with.

PS: This is by far the funniest review of the film I've seen. It's chock full of spoilers, though, so don't read it if you want to see it (although it makes it sound so bad I almost want to see it just for its sheer badness): http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=75893f9a-3391-4ab5-88c8-cf7e74bcd835

Not my type of movie, but I do know several people who went to see it just to watch the X-Files trailer. They all thought it stunk too.

This really was a bad movie, but at the same time it is almost worth it to watch because of how bad it is. Many parts were unintentionally funny and there were several of us in the theater laughing at times when we weren't supposed to. The acting was just atrocious--just everyone was bad. It is almost like he wanted to remake The Birds, but instead of birds, there are plants in this case--and no, this is nowhere in the same league as The Birds, which was a good movie. Besides the acting, the dialogue was just silly-like the whole movie and the music score was just off. I really think M.Night Shymalan (sp?) should think about hiring writers on his next movie instead of doing it all himself. One of the things I really liked about the premise was how subtle the message was

I just got back from it. I wasn't really expecting much, so maybe that is why I wasn't horribly disappointed. It was an okay movie. Would have rather waited for it on video, but I don't regret seeing it. I agree he could definitely use some help with his writing. I just don't understand how he could make The Sixth Sense & Unbreakable... and then everything else he has made?!? The first two were amazing... everything since... mediocre. But they probably all could have been GREAT had he not tried to do it all himself. If he would recognize his own weaknesses and get some good feedback he could have fixed a lot of the mistakes. Some of his dialogue is just SO amatuer and SO bad I believe if he lets others screen his scripts they MUST be telling him, so either he isn't getting feedback or he is ignoring it, IMO. Tara P

I think this gets the award of the dumbest movie ever. I liked Sixth Sense. Love Unbreakable. I ever tolerated all the other movies, once I got over what I wanted to see, and what he provied. (great plot that was dropped for something else). But this movie was horrible and I will not see another one in the theatre. I will wait for Netflix. I don't like wasting money like you spend to see a movie in the theatre for garbage like that.

Yes, but what I don't get is how he can write something as great as Sixth Sense and then just go so far downhill on the others? It is as if he either forgot how to write or maybe Sixth Sense and to a lesser extent Unbreakable were just flukes? I don't mind so much spending money for bad movies--sometimes to brighten my day and ease stress, a laughably bad movie will help. That is part of the reason I saw The Mist--another bad movie, but yet also funny.

This movie was so bad. I thought if this was a in the "Scary Movie" series, then it might have been funny. LOL! Was Sixth Sense & Unbreakable written by him?

You can read my quick review HERE. I did like the overall concept and story, but I couldn't get past the horrible acting, dialogue, and script.
