is the only thing that makes us truthful.

I'll repeat it so it's not broken up by the subject line.

The cross as God's truth over us is the only thing that makes us truthful. From Dietrich Bonhoeffer's The Cost of Discipleship

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this quote. LL

If we truly believe in what Christ accomplished on the cross, then yes, it is that which takes away the veils from our face...

"And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory" 2 Corinthians 3:18

Once we understand that Christ's shed blood on the cross has provided forgiveness for our sins, then we have confidence to approach God just as we are. There is no longer any need to hide our sin from Him, no need to live a life of pretense.

Knowing we are fully accepted, removes the need to hide anything. It becomes easier to acknowledge our faults and we don't expect perfection of others.

"When we know the cross we are no longer afraid of the truth." D.B.

"But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." (John 3:21)

Peace

And what about our relationships with others? Doesn't the cross also mean truthfulness, not hiding but being open with others?

Yes, indeed.

Yes, that is what I believe as well.

The truth and truthfulness are a deadly combination.

Well, I guess it's a fine quote as far as it goes. Personally, I would prefer:
The cross as God's Love towards us is the only thing that makes us loving.

Deadly in what way, LL? Please clarify.

Truth and truthfulness bring death to the fleshly self life and truth and truthfulness are hated by others. It is what brought about Jesus' death and will bring out a similar response in our lives when we live and speak truth and truthfully.

Seeing ourselves as we truly are, which is what the cross does, makes us loving because we know we don't deserve anything but hell. . . and certainly not the love of God. And our response is love to God and others.

You're speaking the same truth as Bonhoeffer IMO. But they are both (truth and love) difficult concepts for our finite minds to grasp.
