Instead of having a thread extolling the virtues of a families based on size, why not have a thread where we can celebrate the positive points of all of our families, large, medium, or small?

I have a small family. I have one son. We are not a "poor small family", nor are we superior in any way to any other family. My family is the best to me because it's my family, just as yours is the best to you because it's your family.

What I like about having a small family...

We can fit comfortably in a regular vehicle.

We have a small house--not so much to clean!

When something happens, I know immediately "who did it"!

We never run out of place settings at the table.

Our family portrait can be done in close-up mode.

I'm only having to pay for college for one.

When sickness runs through our family, it has a short trip to make.

I never forget a birthday, or mix up names.

I'll stop there--so--what do you like about your family?

Thank you for starting this thread

We are very much enjoying just having one baby, right now anyway. Eventually we will add a second one to the mix, and maybe a third but no more then that.

It's easy to go places and doesn't take much planning.

We fit in a normal vehicle

It's still cheaper to fly across the country, then to drive and probably always will be.

Likewise, it's still affordable for us to join friends for trips to Hawaii or other fun vacation locals.

Clothing... we still like hand-me-downs, but when I do need to buy new stuff it's affordable.

We can fit in our 2 bedroom apartment very comfortably.

We can get our family pictures done at Walmart or Target if we want, and they don't tell us their studio is to small.

I have two kids, and I like that 3br apartments are easier to find than 4br.

I have the same amount of hands as I do kids.

I can use the fun buggy at the grocery store without worrying if a mom of two or more missed out on it. (It bugs me when I see a mom of 1 using it since there is only 1 fun buggy at my grocery store, reminds me too much of the time I walked out of the handicapped stall to find two women in wheelchairs waiting for me).

Double strollers are less expensive than triple strollers. LOL

We each can have two hotdogs, since 8 come in a pack.

Paying for clothes that get used by two kids is almost like paying half price.

DH and I are happy because we are not outnumbered .

We just love our family, period. Our kids are super cute, smart, and wonderful.

I used to love getting hand-me-downs from my nephew for our son--then as he grew up, some of hubby's shirts got handed down, then eventually, some of son's shirts were handed up to hubby!

I am just so thankful that I do not have one child that is almost grown. I thought Jack was going to be it. We tried for years and years but got a lot of heartbreak. Then one day a miracle I got a positive pregnancy test and I did not miscarry. I adore my little girl. We are trying to make her a big sister but if we do not have anymore I am so blessed to have my little girl.

We're sort of medium, three girls. I like that my twins have a built in playmate. They get some hand-me downs from big sister and they have someone to help guide them a little. I like having my older one because she is unique and very different from her sisters, she is just a nice kid and the twins have her for a good example. My kids are smart, funny, beautiful and it's never dull with them.

3 kids. They can have friends over most anytime, so they always have lots of playmates. But I don't have to feed or clothe those playmates and I can send them home any time I want

We can participate in car pool because there is extra room in our van.

My dd who got married recently had her siblings in her wedding and we were able to pay for her wedding. I don't know if we could have done that if we had more kids.

My husband and I can go on date nights every single week! We have the time and energy for it.

The positive of three kids....all girls. They wear each others clothes and share make up, perfume and all that good stuff. They can pass stuff to each other and enjoy doing that but they also like knowing they get new stuff too. Not everything always has to be a hand me down.

They can argue and fight but are each others best defenders as well. We don't live in town so they've always relied on each other.

I don't mind each of them having a friend over on the weekend. That only means 6 kids in the house and we do that often. However if I had say 6 kids I don't think I'd let each of them have a friend over at the same time. For sure not often!

I could come up with lots of little things but the most important is just simply loving my family and enjoying being with each other. I wouldn't want it any other way than how it is now.

I have 3 kids, so I guess we're medium-sized.

I love that we can all snuggle on one couch to watch a movie.

There are enough years between my older and younger sons that hand-me-downs seem new again

We go everywhere together: shopping, soccer games, school stuff. I hate to think we'll have to split ourselves up one day, and am putting that off as long as possible!

I love my small family. I have two "only children" - they are ten years apart! I love that I can spend so much time with each one. My dd and I are reading together every night for at least two hours. I don't think I've ever heard, "you don't ever have enough time for me" from either of my kids.

I just received the last pair of shoes X will hand down to me. She's now having to wear men's shoes because they don't come in her size in womens unless we go to specialty stores where they're all around $200 each.

I love that there are enough parents to go around for each child if it's been a hard day at school all around.

I love that dh and I aren't outnumbered.

I love that we can fit enough kayaks for everyone on top of dh's truck.

As I thought about this, it made me laugh because right now we are a three person family, but we hope to be much larger than this one day!

So right now:

We all fit in our Honda Civic (we've been thinking, what if the next pregnancy is twins, we'll need a new car!)
We can fit in a 2 bedroom apartment (rent in the city is not cheap!)
Getting up and going doesn't take forever
Shopping is still a relatively stress free outing

I'm definitely taking this time to truly figure out how to best organize myself, my home and my family, so as it grows I don't become overwhelmed.

That being said, we often have our nieces and nephews to stay with us (often a few at a time) and as Dh and I look at our crowded little apartment we think "this will ours one day" (and we mean that in a positive way )

OK - the car comments hit a nerve. I can't have a normal, small compactish car with 80 mpg.

Oh wait - 2 kids, one of each. 14 & 11.

Back to cars - we went car shopping and I insisted we needed a big, full-sized car. I'd look by myself and folks suggested little cars and kept asking why we needed something bigger since we have a van.

My son is 6 foot, my daughter is already 5'2" and I have a niece as well as 5 nephews that topped out at 6 foot.

Can anyone else say 'leg room?'

We have the name confusion even with one of each. As an added bonus. Poppa calls DeeDee by his youngest sister's name all the time. Just yesterday, he said that his first experience seeing labor was when "Mom was in labor with DeeDee" I asked if he wanted to rephrase that...

My family is such a blessing to me. My wife is the most wonderful wife a man could ask for. My two children teach me every day. I am blessed over and above what I deserve.

I do love only having to keep track of one little one. I see some parents that are so frazzled by several little ones going in different directions.

I had a "larger" family the first trip through parenthood (5 kids)...it was fun, chaotic, nuts, busy, insane and incredible...
This time, there's only 2...it's still fun, chaotic, nuts, busy, insane and incredible.

The first 5 are now between the ages of 25 and 18...the last 2 are almost 4 and 5...

I wouldn't trade any of them or all of them for anything...the incredible memories they have of things...
For example...with the 5...there were 3 girls and 2 boys...the girls sat in the back seat of the minivan, as it fit 3...the boys sat in the middle seat...my oldest daughter, to this day, swears that momma could swat all three girls and both boys without ever taking her hands off the wheel or looking back...

There were great times and not so great times (4 out of 5 with chicken pox at the same time), but it definitely was an experience!

This time, with only 2, its still fun...I miss the chaos of the now "big" kids, but love having enough time, hands and arms to cuddle the 2 littles...

We were always looking for another kid, partly because we wanted more, but also because we were used to have 5-6 or more standing next to us at scouts.

I notice now that I don't 'see' kids that are below my waist like I used to - but I still understand baby-babble.

Plus to only two - we have a minivan and each kid can bring a friend and we still have room for their gear. If schedules don't work out - each parent can drive and get everyone where they need to be.

Minus - if we are late, they'd be waiting by themselves. And, no one for DeeDee to babysit.
