I have never had a problem before connecting to my banking sites, then all of a sudden, I no longer can. I have a Dell Inspiron E1405, wireless, Lynksys router. I can connect to all my other usual sites...just not those. Also, I can't get on using Firefox, IE, or SBC Yahoo, if that helps. I scanned for a virus and my computer is clean. I don't know what do do, can anyone help?

Check all your connections, make sure they are all plugged in correctly.

Thanks, Jon, but if it wasn't all plugged in correctly, I wouldn't be able to connect to write this.

As I said, I can connect to everything but my banking sites.

Is it possible that you can tell us which exact sites with links so we can check on them? It is possible their website is having issues, but it would be odd if it is multiple banks. You don't have to post login info, just links to the site and maybe where you're trying to navigate to on the page. Thanks.

I don't think it's the sites...I can access them from work, but they are Wells Fargo and Bank of America. As I said, I was able to access them before...this just started happening.

ETA: My daughter who is on my network couldn't access her bank either. I don't remember which one it is.

Go to your browser options or preferences setting and clear the "cookies". I had to do this on a friends computer and that worked.

Good idea. Clearing all of the temporary internet files may help, too.

Only other thing I can think of off-hand is maybe DNS issues. Find the link you're trying to access and in the address bar, replace the site name (www.bankofamerica.com) with the IP address (leaving all the /'s and other stuff after it).

Bank of America: 171.159.193.173
Wells Fargo: 151.151.88.133

If they work with the IP address, then it is a DNS issue. Give it a shot.

Thanks....tried it and got the same message I keep getting when I try to connect using the site name:

"The connection has timed out

The server at 151.151.88.133 is taking too long to respond.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

Okay, the wellsfargo one is a bad example.
The Bank of America one might work better.
This is what I got trying to use IP for wellsfargo:
Wells Fargo Error

Forgive me for not testing it before posting. ;)

Edit: D'oh... forum not letting me put a pic for some reason.

Their server may be down for servicing and maintenance or very busy. Try back in a couple of hours.

If you have windows xp have you maybe put on a recent update or maybe service pack 3?
If you have windows vista, have you maybe put on service pack 1. I tried it and all I got for my trouble was the site is taking too long to load?

Another thing to check is the hosts file, to see if any web sites you're trying to get to are getting redirected to localhost.

Example: say you can't get to excite.com. Look for it in the hosts file thusly:

1. Open up a command window (Start/Run/cmd).
2. cd to the proper directory (cd \windows\system32\drivers\etc).
3. Look for a relevant entry (find "excite" hosts /i).

Do the same for the site(s) you're having a problem with.

I've got other ideas but let's try this one first.

Once you have the command window open, do steps 2 and 3.

Step 1 was just to get the command window open.

This web site is timing out all over the place. Much more than usual. I'm on yahoo for the next few minutes if you'd rather.

mywritingdesk is the ID to look for.

LOL!! That means I was wrong and now it's time to try something else!

Were http://wellsfargo.com and http://bankofamerica.com the actual URLs?

Try this from a command window:

tracert bankofamerica.com

Should look something like this:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc>tracert bankofamerica.com

Tracing route to bankofamerica.com [171.161.161.173]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 172.16.1.111
2 7 ms 7 ms 7 ms c-3-0-ubr01.brockton.zz.yyywww.level3.net [234.1
67.192.12]
3 7 ms 8 ms 6 ms ge-2-36-ur01.anywhere.ee.remark.level3.net [234
8.86.237.331]
10 60 ms 48 ms 47 ms xe-10-2-0.edge1.NewYork2.Level3.net [4.78.169.49
]
11 24 ms 17 ms 17 ms vlan69.csw1.NewYork1.Level3.net [4.68.16.62]
12 18 ms 17 ms 17 ms ae-63-63.ebr3.NewYork1.Level3.net [4.69.134.97]
13 53 ms 53 ms 53 ms ae-6.ebr2.Dallas1.Level3.net [4.69.137.121]
14 * 59 ms * ae-82-82.csw3.Dallas1.Level3.net [4.69.136.146]

15 52 ms 54 ms 52 ms ae-3-89.edge4.Dallas1.Level3.net [4.68.19.137]
16 55 ms 55 ms 56 ms BANK-OF-AME.edge4.Dallas1.Level3.net [4.71.216.2
]
17 56 ms 61 ms 55 ms www.bankofamerica.com [171.161.161.173]
18 54 ms 56 ms 55 ms www.bankofamerica.com [171.161.161.173]

Check for any timeouts or if the thing hangs altogether.
