I have a hard time with my garden. It gets invaded with weeds. How do you keep your garden weed-free?

By getting down on my knees at least once a week and pulling them out.
Putting down a nice thick layer of mulch helps keep weeds down. There's also this black material that you put down before you plant, then plant through it. That's supposed to be the best , but it has to go down before you put anything in the ground as far as I know.

Aren't we all? Too bad I can't teach the rabbits that are decimating my bean plants to eat weeds.

Lots and lots of hard work!
It is too bad about the bunnies. Their eating my onions and leaving the weeds. At least the raccoon and ground hog are leaving my garden alone for now! They had better leave my pumpkins alone this year!

My weeds are the absolute bane of my existence! There's nothing I hate worse!! I did recently manage to get it all cleaned out; it looks great! So, of course (again), I've resolved to keep it that way - we'll see. Wish I had a better answer for you too. All I can do is assure you I feel your pain.

My dad sent me an email of helpful hints today. One of them said that weeds will grow through that black mesh stuff (I can testify to that...we have wasted about $60 on that stuff...weeds just laugh at it), but they can not grow through wet newspaper. It says to put newspaper down, overlapping the sheets, wet it and then spread mulch on top.
I'm going to try that next time we need to weed and mulch.

Newspaper is good but it does have to be several sheets thick if you have really problem weeds. Cardboard (minus the tape or staples) works well too.

I have used the newspaper trick, it does work fairly well- top it with a couple inches of mulch though, or the weeds just start again if you only put dirt on top of it. They are easy to pull because they don't go deep, but the mulch pretty much keeps them away altogether. Nothings perfect though.
I have never heard of using grass clippings, but I have heard that 3 inches of leaves works well and provides good compost as it degrades too.

What works for me is two layers of news paper, black landscaping weedblock paper and 6 or more inches of mulch. As it rains the newspaper will get wet and slowly kills the weeds. the black weedblocker does work for me in combination of the two others - newspaper and mulch.
In beds were you do not wish to mulch, try using preen after you have turned the soil and removed much of the weed roots. Preen prevents new weeds for developing.

I've used a double layer of the black ground weed suppresant fabric and it's worked really well. Even the single layer that I used over part of the garden worked well last year.

Can you use Preen in an existing garden too? Does it damage the roots of the flowers as well as the weeds?

Yes you can use it in exiting flower beds. Preen prevents new grown roots from developing or reseeding. For instance, if you have a perennial that reseeds each year, it will block the reseeding but will not kill off existing plants. You may not want to add it to beds where you want your perennials to develop larger. I use Preen especially in annual beds to stop new weed growth. Planting new plants in a Preen treated bed does not adversely affect the new plants at all.
