This is a question for anyone who wants to answer.

What do you think about the notion of being under spiritual covering vs. plainly being associated with a local body of likeminded believers.

I ask this question due to teachings of persons being labeled as sons and daughters of ministries.

Basically what is covering?

Where did it originate?

How does this help the believer in their personal walk with Christ?

Being under a covering was a product of the discipleship movement back in the 60s and 70s. It was introduced as a means of controlling people's lives.

It is unscriptual for two reasons. There is nothing in the scriptures to say you have to have a covering as your covering is Jesus Christ, the high priest of our confession. I know that leadership quotes the scripture that says you are to obey those in authority over you. In the case of NT teaching, that is unpaid elders who grew up in the local fellowship. You are not required to submit to authority that is not sanctioned by God, bearing in mind that God does not sanction that which is contrary to his word.

Secondly, when God gave man dominion at creation he gave it over everything except each other. Therefore no one has a right to dominate another.

From many years observation, leadership who use the authority thing usually operate on the basis that they are part of God's chosen few and therefore can hear from God but you cannot, so that is the reason why you should obey them.

It is the reason that the gifts of the spirit have all but disappeared. Why do we need supernatural leading when you have a leader who hears from God and is right every time?

This means that people are actively discouraged from having a personal relationship with God himself because they might hear from him something that the leadership doesn't want to know about as it might threaten their position of power.

I agree with everything Mark wrote here. (Does that scare you, Mark? )

No it doesn't scare me as I am very secure in my understanding of scripture and my relationship with the Lord. He is the only person who I want to please, but thankyou anyway.

May I ask you for a more detailed definition of the above.

"Spiritual covening" can mean a lot of different things to different folks, and I would like to be sure about whqat we are talking about here.

Are you talking about accountability, stand alone Churches, shepherding, or what?

Thanks
RC
