Do we know if this invitation was given before Jesus had His encounter with the woman who was a sinner in Simon's house? Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matthew 11:28-29

Please, please, please pardon my answer, Cherished. I hope it is not offensive. But He is not bound by time. He allowed His earthly life to be bound by time, but He, being G-d, is not bound by time. That invitation is timeless. That invitation existed before the foundation of the earth. Knowing us, He always knew it was necessary for us, and He gave the invitation at a time meaningful to humanity. I know: you knew that! But so often, because we are human and are so dependent upon time, we forget that He is not.

No offense taken...I understand what you are saying. But, as you say, He did allow His earthly life to be bound by time and, since I am writing about His earthly life, that is why I ask the question

Okay. In that case, my answer would be that the Scriptures are not usually written in chronological order, because it was written by Hebrews who usually put their writings together according to subject matter, according to the point they were making. As a result, I doubt anyone knows the exact time when the words came out of His mouth, in comparison to the other incident. Luke may have been the only one who attempted to put things in chronological order.

Not trying to hijack the thread;but I would love to learn more about this staement. Does this mean for instance what we read in the Torah was not chronological as well?I.E. When and how the law was given?

"Usually" was not the correct word; I should have written that it is not a priority. To stay on topic, I will PM you later. I am leaving the Internet right now.

Well, I have seen listed in various places something along the line of "The Gospels in Chronological Order" Would someone be kind enough to recommend a study like this to me?

Since you answered my post here, and I forgot to PM Sunofone, maybe you will allow me to answer here? There are several Bible publishers that, over the years, have attempted to put the Gospels in chronological order, as well as the whole Bible. There are NIVs, KJVs, and others, I am sure. There are also Internet sites you can use in order to read the Bible in chronological order. When I wrote that quote:
In that case, my answer would be that the Scriptures are not usually written in chronological order, because it was written by Hebrews who usually put their writings together according to subject matter, according to the point they were making. I should have written: quote:
In that case, my answer would be that the Gospels are not usually written in chronological order... We also cannot necessarily plan on other Scripture to be in chronological order, because quote:
Hebrews ... usually put their writings together according to subject matter, according to the point they were making. I am presently reading the Bible in chronological order, according to the way several scholars thought it would be. I find that for me, the readings flow more easily this way. I have set them up on pages I carry in my purse. When I read a particular section, I mark it off the chart. This is really beneficial to me, because I have ADD and am slight problem with dyslexia. Somehow, knowing that I am reading in chronological order helps keep me on track, by keeping my mind bu sy with the "what happened firsts" and the "what happened nexts."

ORIGINAL: CherishedbyGod Do we know if this invitation was given before Jesus had His encounter with the woman who was a sinner in Simon's house? Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matthew 11:28-29 Since the choosing and sending forth of the 12 disciples occurred before these sayings were recorded in chapter 11, and since the visit to Simon the Pharisee occurred afterwards, it is more than likely that Jesus spoke these words before the visit. In any event, the timing of any saying of Christ, the Son of God, is immaterial. What He says is timeless, and God invites all to come to Him in a similar fashion in Isaiah 55:1-7, where we read "and your labour for that which satisfieth not" as well as "and your soul shall live", which echo "all ye that labour and are heavy laden" and "find rest for your souls". The words of God are the words of Christ, and the words of Christ are the words of God.

AFAIK, Luke is the only gospel that claims to be chronological: Luke 1 NASB Luk 1:1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us, Luk 1:2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, Luk 1:3 it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; Luk 1:4 so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught. John is clearly NOT chronological. The woman mentioned by the OP is in Luke 7: Luk 7:36 Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to dine with him, and He entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. Luk 7:37 And there was a woman in the city who was a sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume, ....... Luk 7:40 And Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he replied, "Say it, Teacher." The quote mentioned by the OP ONLY appears in Matthew, which is of questionable chrolological order. There is no real way to sync them up to find out which came first. Edited to add: You should really check out John Gill's commentary on Matt 11.28 and 29. From 29: Take my yoke upon you,.... The phrase is Rabbinical. The Jewish doctors often speak (a) of עול מלכות שמים, "the yoke of the kingdom of heaven", and of persons taking it upon them; and which they exhort to, and express in much such language as here (b); קדישא קבילו עלייכו עול מלכותא, "take upon you the yoke of the holy kingdom", every day. They distinguish this from the yoke of the law, and say (c). "a man must first take upon him the yoke of the kingdom of heaven, and after that take upon him the "yoke" of the commandment.''
