I'm just crazy about the new "Intermission" CD that Triumphant Quartet has just released. I'm told that these are really old songs that have been performed by some legendary Southern Gospel groups. I know that recently the Kingsmen have done one of them and Gold City will have another on a new CD in June, but I thought it would be fun to test our combined knowledge of who did these songs first. (Actually, I don't know any of them, so I just want YOUR knowledge - LOL) A few of the songs are up on TQ's MySpace site if you want to listen. TQ MySpace link Here's the list: It's a Wonderful Day Way Up in Gloryland When I Receive My Robe and Crown For God So Loved --- this is NOT the BF&A version! Turn Your Back (will be on a new Gold City album) Gonna Build a Mountain That Still Small Voice Pearly Gates I Remember the Day The Cloud He's Coming Back On (on the new Kingsmen album) Welcome to Heaven Bonus - if you have the album, there is a track called "Intermission." It has Jeff Stice playing a song and then Paul Heil comes on with it and tells people about the TQ web site --- that's really thinking outside the box! I was impressed. Anyway --- what is the name of the song Jeff is playing????

Well, this is one of those threads where I don't have anything to contribute! I don't know about SG "oldies" 'cause I haven't followed SG that long! But, I'll check back because I'm curious to see what the replies are!

I'm afraid I don't have any info on the writers of these songs. This wasn't I'm Gonna Wear a Crown. Do you still think it was the Nelons? I don't know if Still Small Voice was the same as Gold City - but maybe! I'll go back and look at some of my old GC stuff. Did Clayton sing Welcome to Heaven when he was with Singing Americans? He does such a wonderful job on it.

"Still Small Voice" was recorded by Gold City on the Portrait project. The song was written by Gerald Crabb and covered by the Crabb Family on one of their first projects. "Welcome To Heaven" was recorded by the Singing Americans on the Black and White project with Michael English on lead. Shortly after the project's release, English left for the Vocal Band. The Singing Americans recorded a concept video of the song with Clayton being featured. I believe the video is on Volscot's You Tube page. (IMO, as good a singer as Clayton is, his rendition while with the Singing Americans didn't hold a candle to Michael's).

I agree with how awesome Intermission is! I just love the intermission track. Mom and I giggle every time it finishes... it's such a cute idea! Speaking of mom, as we first listend to it she was saying pepole that used to sing the songs, but I didn't pay enough attention cause I can't remember!

ORIGINAL: jchaz When I Receive My Robe and Crown (Nelons) Hey, Charlie. I'm afraid I don't have any info on the writers of these songs. This wasn't I'm Gonna Wear a Crown. Do you still think it was the Nelons? Rex Nelon was an avid bluegrass music fan. Over the years, the RNS recorded several SG versions of some BG standards. I recently heard a VERY old cut of them on the radio singing "Old Brush Arbors By The Side Of the Road". But, in the case of the song in question, ("When I Recieve My Robe And Crown") they put a SG spin on a new song that Rex acquired through his publishing company. A bluegrass family, The Shufflers, wrote and recorded the song, but the RNS eventually did a bang-up job on it. It was on the same LP as "O, For A Thousand Tongues". I believe it was called "We Shall Behold The King". Karen Peck was the soprano. I believe this might've been her 2nd LP with the group. The song that you eluded to, "We Shall Wear A Robe And Crown" (originally featuring Janet Paschal) was recorded several years previous on "Expressions of Love". The GVB eventualy recorded that same basic song, but used a little different wording, and made a HUGE tempo change. I prefer the RNS version. I saw JP sing that sugarstick in concert several times, and it ALWAYS was a crowd favorite. They sang it one night for about 15 minutes at a Church of God here in Mableton. Them (then) old-time Pentecostals ran, and ran, and ran, and literally shouted themselves hoarse. IT WAS WONDERFUL!!! I think JP even got a little loose with the tongue (so-to-speak), if you know what I mean!!!
