Adoration, respect, honour given to God. It's a human response to the supernatural - our natural response when confronted by the overwhelmingly powerful or beautiful.

Ro 12:1
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship

When I hear the word Worship I think - Adoration given to God alone.

However worship comes from the old english weorthscipe, which means the condition of being worthy of honor, respect or dignity. To worship in the larger sense is to ascribe honor, worth or excellence to someone.

I seek the Eucharist because Jesus told us to do so, in His name, to better remember Him. I peer up at the crucifix, to feel His pain, to see my future, to understand life itself. I pray before the Cross, reaffirming my total commitment to it. Praise God.

There are countless examples of men worshiping in the Bible. I thought I'd take a different approach and give a few examples on how the angels, etc. worship.

Luke 2
13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”

Revelation 5
11Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands,
12saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.”
13And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”
14And the four living creatures kept saying, “Amen.” And the elders fell down and worshiped.

Oh, Amen and Amen! Those are awesome verses. How often I have "seen" myself in Heaven with all the saints worshiping, unhindered the Lamb who sits on the throne!!!!

And to think it is really going to happen is mind-boggling!

Glory!!!

I think one of the important things to remember when considering worship is that God is not the only one we can worship. Heh, please note I say "can," obviously we only should worship Him, but sadly our humanity gets in the way of that sometimes.
Worship is whatever we fear. Whatever we let control our life is what we worship. For example, if we are so worried about our finances that it keeps us up at night, or if we are "too busy" for ministry because of our children's schedules, or whatever else happens to the biggest factor in our lives, then we are not worshiping God.
Worship is also service, it is an action. I've heard it said that if you really want to know what's important to a person, look at their check-book. I would add to that - look at their daily schedule. Where do we spend our time, our energy, our money? What is it that consumes who we are? Is it our jobs? Our families? Even our ministries at church can become an idol if we lose perspective on who we should be doing it for.

The Romans 12 verse above sums it up fairly well. Worship is our life. If we aren't living that life with an emphasis given to God, we are not really worshiping Him with all that we should be.

All of life is not worship, rather it is service to God. I would like to point out that the Ethiopian eunuch in (Acts 8:27) went to Jerusalem to worship.

.... and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

Also notice Cornelius in (Acts 10:25) -

25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.

26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

From the verses we learn that we are not to just worship anything or anyone. We also learn that worhip is a specific act.

Cornelius was not worshipping before he fell down and began to worship Peter.

We also learn that all of life is not worship. The Ethiopian eunuch had to go to Jerusalem to worship.

(John 4:24) - tells us how to worship and gives us the guidelines of true biblical worship. We must worship with the right attitude. We must worship according to truth (the N.T. Law of Christ) (John 17:17).

God will not accept any and all worship (Gen.4;5) (Heb.11:4) (1John 3:12) (Mt.15:9) (Lev 10:1-3).

Worship is making ourselves available to God to live His life in and through us. That is what is meant by Romans 12:1. A living sacrifice is someone who has given themselves over to God for Him to use them as He sees fit. That is the crux of the Christian life. The Christian life is learning to trust the indwelling Holy Spirit to guide us and teach us.

Grace and Peace

Rev.4:11 "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being."

The word "worship" is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word "weorthscipe" or "worth-ship". What you value most in life is what you will worship. For some that may be money, sports, gardens, cars etc.. In the above verse the people believed God and God alone was worthy of their worship. They believed God alone is worthy of our praise and sacrifice.

Today we worship God because He alone is worthy of our praise because of what He has done for us. We do not worship Him in order to gain mercy as some religions teach we must, but we worship Christ because of what we have already received.

How do we worship God?
- by seeking to live holy lives set apart for His purposes. (Rom.12:1)
- by studying Scripture and getting deeper into His Word, the Bible. (2 Tim.2:15)
- by preparing yourself personally as you seek to come before God in repentance and prayer so you may worship Him with "clean hands and a pure heart." (Ps.24:4)
- live your life in response to God`s Word in obedience by watching out that you will not be sidetracked by your personal pride or personal agenda.
- also seek not to worship alone. While worshipping together with other believers through songs, readings and prayers, learn the art of showing grace to others with whom we may disagree.

Here`s a quote from Matt Redman about worship. 'In the end, worship can never be a performance, something you`re pretending or putting on. It`s got to be an overflow of your heart... Worship is about getting personal with God, drawing close to God."

Here is Strong's definition:

G4352
προσκυνέω
proskuneō
pros-koo-neh'-o
From G4314 and probably a derivative of G2965 (meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his master’s hand); to fawn or crouch to, that is, (literally or figuratively) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore): - worship.

As I read this it makes me think that to truly worship the Lord, in a way that is pleasing to Him, we must have a humble heart.

Perhaps, that is one reason many people never worship Him...they are just too prideful....

Excellent definition. Look at the following verses of Scripture and see what each have in common when describing worship.

-Gen.24:26 "Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD."
-2 Chron.7:3 "When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the LORD, saying, He is good; His love endures forever."
-2 Chron.29:30 "So they sang praises with gladness and bowed their heads and worshiped."
-Ps.95:6 "Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker."
-1 Cor.14:25 "So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, `God is really among you!"

Worship is always DOWN in the Bible. Praise is always up.
