We go through passages of scripture, and ask the following questions: -what does this passage say about God -are there any promises -are there any commands -are there any examples to follow or avoid We kept the same format as our last bible study, and are looking for different ways to encourage discussion and analysis of passage. Do you have any other questions/acronyms/helpful tools to do this?

I'm not thinking that the same questions would work for every passage. A leader has to get into the scripture, understand it, gain insight, then ask questions that guide the group to that insight. I often open with a question like, "What's your overall impression of that passage?", "What stands out to you?" or "What do you think the writer is trying to say?" But after that, everything depends on the passage, "Do you think Jesus was angry when He told that parable?" ... "How do you think the people he was talking to reacted?" ... "Who is He talking about when He says 'sheep'?" ... "Have any of you had any experiences with sheep?" ... "Do you find this to be convicting or uplifting (or some of each)?" ... "Are you looking forward to end times?" ... "Do you find our culture reluctant to talk about God's judgment? Why might that be?" ... "What are the characteristics of sheep that we can live out?" ... "Is it difficult to live like that?" ... "What is the value of living like that if we're saved anyways... or are we?" I do tend to close the same, asking, "Are you willing to do whatever it is that the passage is calling us to do" then tell your neighbour "WHY are you willing to do it" and "HOW are you willing to do it?" then pray for that person.

ORIGINAL: kajuraleigh We go through passages of scripture, and ask the following questions: -what does this passage say about God -are there any promises -are there any commands -are there any examples to follow or avoid We kept the same format as our last bible study, and are looking for different ways to encourage discussion and analysis of passage. Do you have any other questions/acronyms/helpful tools to do this? One of the most fascinating ways to engage people in Bible Study is to have them mark all the connecting words before looking at the entire passage. These include words like "But", "AND", "FOR", "THEREFORE", etc. I'm also going to throw in words like "JUST", "THAT" and "BECAUSE" in this sample. It is surprising how these words can bring Scripture to life and lead to deeper questions and discussions. John 3:14-21 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

I recently went to a "teaching seminar" and it taught that one could use ACTS for a review of your study. For instance, you look at a passage and you: Find something in the passage that relates to God and "Adore" it (for instance, His Grace, Mercy, Justice, Holiness, Righteousness, Eternality, Will etc) Find something in the passage you need to "Confess" and talk about it Find something in the passage that you can give "Thanks" for and talk about it. Then finally see what is in the passage you can "Supplicate" (or ask for) from God. I thought it was neat, but have not used it yet.

How does this verse, or passage, apply to my life today? What is the Holy Spirit speaking to me about this subject? What other verses could enlighten me on this topic? I really love this question- Who am I going to share this with, and what do I need to pray about after reading/studying it?

Some of the Bible Studies I lead we went through the Bible book by book, chapter by chapter paragraph by paragraph. Then we discussed what we got out of the passage, what was the writer referring to, what was the background of the passage, does the passage have more than one meaning or time being referenced just as many prophecies are speaking to the current situation as well as future events. When some might have studied the original Greek or Hebrew we discussed that. Or some might have read commentaries and we discussed the commentaries. All depending on the passages and much of the time we discussed how it applies to us currently and testimonies showing the use of the passages. At the current church i am at we have books that have fill in questions that we copy and give out to members so we can discuss the questions and answers from the lesson. Some lessons are on a particular book of Bible some are topical. Also the Pastor and I have typed up some of our own studies to hand out. This way people have notes to go by and to keep and reference at other times. Sorry no methodologies or teaching tricks I never attended any classes or seminars on teaching or training just a simple computer geek and business person who was called to teach and preach. Just the opinion of a small town preacher

Hello kajuraleigh I suppose any framework of Bible study is good. But have you thought about opening the floor and give anyone the chance to share what the Lord lays on their hearts. This can be both very enlightening and edifying. However, if you belong to a church that has distinct doctrines, you could run into some danger. There is a man I know, for example, that takes sanctification and runs it into the ground. It actually overshadows his relationship with the Lord. It even overshadows the miraculous effects of the blood of Jesus that washes us white as snow. Then there is always miracles for today, which invariably leads to the Holy Spirit. Such digressions always ends on the subject of tongues. Now within those three topics lie an endless number of required doctrines that define how people should think. I've always wanted to start a class in which we do nothing but read the Bible and let the Holy Spirit teach. Possible?
