hello, its been on my heart to start doing a home bible study with my sons. One is three years old and the other is 4 months old. does anyone else do it and how would you start? what kind of tools do you use. why do a bible study with my kids? I once heard that the school system has your kids 5 days a week for 8 hours but the church only has your kids once a week for a few hours. I want scripture to be of up most importance to my kids and trully a light to their path. elise

We were a little older (13, 10, 8, 4) when my mother started home Bible study with us. We worked through the Bible from beginning to end (skipped over some, and did it chronological where the books were out of order). We did not merely read/study the Bible, we LIVED it. We were in the garden of eden, we tried to build bricks without straw, we wandered around in the desert (sandbox at the park) for 40 years (or at least long enough to work through that part of Exodus), we built the ark of the tabernacle, we marched around Jericho, we built the temple of God, as we worked through the Old Testament...and when things we had built were mentioned in later parts of the Bible, we would bring them out. We would be outside rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem (aka a snow fort) with Jeremiah. In the New Testament, when Jesus died, and the temple veil was torn in two, we had our temple out, and we cut the temple veil in two... I know the Bible fairly well today, and I credit it to that time 30+ years ago.

Oh, yes, we do this! I have two children, my son is 3 and my daughter is 21 months old. We have a routine every morning, they get up, we all go to the kitchen and I fix their breakfast, and while they are eating I read the Bible to them. We never found the bedtime devotions to be very effective, because everyone is tired, etc., and frankly, it doesn't always get done. Someone suggested breakfast-time to me, and I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of it. It's so simple! Breakfast is such a routine for us, and the kids are still quiet and subdued during that time. It's perfect! Earlier this year, hubby and I looked and found a Children's Bible that we were both pleased with and so for now, that's what I read to them from. When they are a little older (like reading age) We will read from our regular Bible together. For now, I read to them, we talk about it so that I know they understood what we read, and then we recite a scripture together until they have it down pat, and we pray. That's what we do and it works well for us.

When I first began I used one of the picture only bibles and would tell them the story, and as the got older I would use the bible story bibles, etc... Now at 13,16, and 18, we are currently going through the Truth project material i.e. looking at a Christian world view through theology, philosophy, anthropology, history, etc...

I once heard that the school system has your kids 5 days a week for 8 hours but the church only has your kids once a week for a few hours. I want scripture to be of up most importance to my kids and trully a light to their path. elise From what I've seen at my neighbor's house (one girl is going to be three next week, 19-20 months old and a four month old boy), there are several types of Bibles and Bible stories avaliable for toddlers. You could also teach them simple songs like "Jesus Loves Me" or "Jesus Loves the Little Children". At three years of age and four months of age they may not necessarily understand the meaning of the songs or Bible passages, but it is planting the seed nonetheless. Maybe you could tell your boys a bit about who Jesus is and the awesome things He has done! My parents sent me to a small Christian, church ran school from pre-school through third grade (when it closed). I remeber learning about Jesus and the Bible and God even back then. We had chapel time every week. We were read Bible passages (like Noah and the Ark) and then worked on coloring sheets of Bible characters and events. We prayed over our snacks and lunches everyday. Little kids seem to like games, so maybe with your older son you can make a little Bible trivia out of the game (ex: who was the first person God created?) very simple basic stuff, nothing too challenging yet! When you have your meals or snacks you could say a little blessing over it "Father in Heaven, we thank you for this food and ask that you nourish it to our tummies. In Jesus name I pray Amen." It doesn't have to be formal or even the most eloquent, just sweet and simple. Introduce your sons to the people in the Bible. Start with God, because He created everything in the world, then progess to maybe Adam and Eve, Noah, Moses, Job, Mary and Joseph, Jesus etc. Also tell your sons what they did and how much God and Jesus loves them. Teach them simple Bible verses. I don't know if you're familiar with them, but the Veggie Tales DVD's portray Biblical stories with computer animated vegtables (I've seen the Jonah video, lol). They incorporate songs along with narration of Bible stories. You can visit their site Veggie Tales If you don't attend a church already, then take time to find one that has sound Bibical foundational teachings, an atomosphere that your family feels comfortable at and likes, and one that has other kids around your sons ages for them to play with or go to Sunday school with. If you do already attend church, maybe let your oldest son go to the children's Sunday school room, to learn and play with other kids his age. Either way, you could maybe also contact a pastor at a local church for ideas. That's about all the ideas that I have, I hope they were able to help you in someway. I'm not a parent, but I remembered what I did as a child and the way my friends incorporate God into their toddler's lives. You can't make your children follow Jesus and get saved (and if you do, then the children are doing it for the desire of following God, but for the desire of staying out of trouble with Mom and Dad). But you can sow that seed early on. Pray for your children too! Ask God to show them His ways and give them a heart that longs for Jesus. Remember Proverbs 22:6 "Train a child up in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."

My 7 year old son and I have attended BSF http://www.bsfinternational.org/Home/tabid/53/Default.aspx for 5 years. I really believe they have one of the best childrens programs for studying God's word. We sit down almost every night and go over the "homework" which consists of questions and answers from the word. He is in 2nd grade this year and is enjoying reading more and more. I like the structure of it and this year we are studying the "Life of Moses" which opens up so much discussion on culture, the nature of God, personality types, etc. During the summer, when BSF isn't in session, I usually just pick a lesson from BSF from years previous. I also have several children's bibles that have some neat pictures to go along with the story which we look at and talk about.

I have noticed that my 7 year old "gets" the bible stories we are reading now more because he has been watching Veggie Tales for years.
