I have been a christian for only a few weeks and I have already made a big mistake. I decided to give some items to a church yard sale and gave some that had sentimental value. After giving them I reconsidered and got them back. what have I done?

Welcome to the forums. Glad your here. I really don't see that you've done anything wrong. You labeled your post "idolatry", but I don't see where there is any in this case (just on what you've posted).

Ah, the perils of being a young Christian. You're being harder on yourself than God is. Imagine being a baby again. Did your dad expect you to start running around and throwing a football to him at 1, 2, 3 or 4 years old? Of course not. You were still learning the basics of balance, walking and co-ordination for "baby tasks". That's not to say that your dad wasn't hoping that you'd grow into the more "adult" task of playing football later on in life. But I bet he was happy at just the little things you could do then. The same is true of God.

I agree. You've got nothing to worry about in this regard, looking4help. What you did is certainly not idolatry. God does not command us to give up objects with sentimental value to church yard sales. Idolatry is about what we place above God in our lives. If you're worried about these objects (or any other aspect of your life; our idols could be money, they could be health, they could be a loved one.) being an idol for you, ask yourself, "Would I be willing to accept it if God, for whatever reason, decided to take this thing/person from me?" If your answer is "no," then you have something to work on. I'm not saying you have to get to the point where it wouldn't upset you if something you hold dear is taken away. God knows we're human, and He knows that life is difficult sometimes. For example, if you hadn't gotten those objects back (for whatever reason), He wouldn't want you to put on a fake-happy face and pretend everything was OK. No, by all means, be sad and upset that you lost these special objects! But at the same time, have a peach that God knows what He is doing, and that He is able to work out any loss we have here on earth for a greater, ultimate good that will be much better than anything we have planned.

You have corrected the mistake and got back what was not supossed to go to the yard sale, thank God you got them back, before they got sold. You will make lots of mistakes. The key is to learn from them, Talk to God in private, and read the word with the purpose to know God personally. For he is the true author of it. And in reality it is a love story to you personally. Read it in it's entirety. Seeking from God the truth of it. For it is not the bible that sets one free, it is the truth of it. And Only God can reveal that to you. ineffable love
