Bush's position on the marriage amendment is at odds with Vice President Dick Cheney's, whose daughter Mary is a lesbian. Cheney has said Americans should be more accommodating of relationships that differ from traditional marriage.

WASHINGTON - The Senate on Wednesday rejected a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, dealing an embarrassing defeat to President Bush and Republicans who hoped to use the measure to energize conservative voters on Election Day….

A majority of Americans define marriage as a union of a man and a woman, as the proposed amendment does, according to a poll out this week by ABC News. But an equal majority opposes amending the Constitution on this issue, the poll found.

Gay Marriage Ban Defeated

Now, perhaps Congress can deal with REAL issues like the war in Iraq, the tensions with Iran, the economy, the ever-increasing budget deficit, passing a bill on illegal immigration, dealing with corruption, etc. rather than writing discrimination into the constitution.

I feel that the vote served its purpose, to show "we the people" how the politicians stand on the issue.

The vast majority of Republicans voted for the preservation of marriage betwee a man and a woman.

Those Republicans who voted for gay marriage are; Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Arlen Specter (R-PA), John Sununu (R-NH), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Lincoln Chafee (R-RI), Judd Gregg (R-NH), and Susan Collins (R-ME).

The Democrats voted as expected (with a couple of exception) to support gay marriage.

So when you go to the polls in November, at least you will know how your Senator stands and can vote accordingly.

Thanks
RC

Funny - very funny. Don't you know the next thing on the agenda is the Flag Burning Amendment?

You really need to get your priorties straight.

...unless republicans or democrats who voted against the amendment did so because they actually feel that state's rights are of at least marginal importance.

the defeat of the FMA was a victory for conservatism and federalism against fundamentalism and hysteria.

^^^The states continue thumbs down w/ Ala. by 81% , excerpt below:

Ala. Voters Endorse Ban on Gay Marriage
UPDATED - Wednesday June 07, 2006 4:48pm

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama voters showed that there are limits to how far they are willing to go to mix faith and politics in the Buckle of the Bible Belt. They overwhelmingly endorsed a ban on gay marriage Tuesday, giving it 81 percent approval.

Nora O'Donnell of NBC reported on Hardball that Bush's poll #s amongst his base is up 8%; I pretty much believe Bush & Friske an 08' likely Prez candidate, knew it would fail & Carl Rove will use it to rally the red states so that any Dem gain possibility will be lessened.

I am glad the vote is coming up. We need it on record who in the Congress support disrespecting our flag, and by association in a time of war; disrespection our troops.

We need a few more of these "position votes" before the second tues. in November.

Then we can all vote our conscience is good faith.

Thanks
RC

likewise, we need it on record who in the Congress supports disrespecting the Constitution of the United States. Way to go out on a limb, conservatives (+Hilary Clinton)! wasting our tax money to curb the actions of 3 errant, hippie Americans per year! bold! enforcing those open fire laws would have been totally ineffectual!!

It seems like those who have consistently been promoting the gay agenda have been successful at getting people to be more and more accepting of their lifestyle. Yes, there are those who are still standing against it, but it seems like even some who profess to be Christians are bending on this issue and are slowly warming to it. I think a lot of desensitization has taken place and it's been in our face so much that people are accepting it. Not everyone, but it seems to be an increasing number.

It is sad. I wonder what it will be like in 10 or 20 years from now. Scary

You know, I was on the national mall on Memorial Day (not for the parade, but there was no avoiding it), lots of people were proudly waving their little plastic flags.

Interesting how they ended up in ashtrays and trash cans after the parade. How is that not 'disrespecting the flag'?.

This whole flag burning issues is the most nonsensical bit of non-issue ever. It would never pass, it does nothing to protect the flag, and it does everything to violate first amendment rights.

Funny, most of the Vietnam vets I have asked don't think the USCON should be changed to prohibit the burning of the flag.

A vote against the amendment is not necessarily a vote for gay marriage.

I am against gay marriage, but I am also against that amendment

Marriage laws are a states issue under the constitution. The federal government has NO business passing national laws regarding marriage. Yes, the feds assume control over many things for which they have no constitutional mandate, but it's never right, IMO.

YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK

MEMORANDUM SUBJECT: Gay and Lesbian Pride Month 2006

FROM: Karen D. Higginbotham, Director Office of Civil Rights

TO: All EPA Employees

During the month of June, we recognize the diversity of our workforce by celebrating and observing Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. This year’s international theme is “Pride, not Prejudice.” As members of the EPA workforce and community, it is important that we treat each other with dignity and respect.

The EPA Office of Civil Rights, Diversity Program for Sexual Orientation is sponsoring an opening event in concert with the EPA-approved Chapter of Gay, Lesbian, Or Bisexual Employees (GLOBE). The opening ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Pavilion Room on the second floor of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. We are extremely pleased to have an outstanding guest speaker -- accomplished actress, writer, and producer Sheryl Lee Ralph.

In addition, we will have Gilles Marchildon, Executive Director for Egale Canada (Equality Canada) and the Egale Canada Human Rights Trust as a speaker. The program will take place June 28, 2006 in the Rachel Carson Room of the Ariel Rios Building from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

There will be other activities sponsored at regional offices and laboratories during the month. Please join us at these events and encourage all employees to attend. If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact Jerome King, National Diversity Program Manager, at (202) 564-7429.

So the government should not discuss Jesus.... but it is okay for our tax dollars to be spent forwarding the homosexual agenda?

So, we have Black History Month, Women in History Month and now Gay & Lesbian Pride Month. Maybe the conservatives should lobby Washington for their own Conservative Christian month.

We don't need one since we have the "U.S. Constitution".
