Having seen GC the last Sunday in September, I can assure you they are still very much a top-drawer quartet. I would say, though, that they got their loudest audience responses to some of the old Gold City Standards, like "I'm Not Giving Up, Robe Of White, When I Get Carried Away, and Midnite Cry".

I was on the Singing at Sea cruise with them the first week of November and it was the NEW new songs off Revival that received the best and loudest responses. I went to a GC concert in a church near Laurel, Mississippi Saturday when we returned from the cruise and the response was the same.

Could it be what you think they need to get back on top is painted with your color or type song you like the best? Just think what SGM might sound like today the Statesmen or the Blackwoods have not gone to a different edge in their day.

Just thinking as to the fact that what a minority of us might think is needed may be just that,a minority.

My first thought was this:
There is no need to compare the past with the present.
We just LOVE GOLD CITY!!!!
What they were, what they are, and what they WILL BE.

They have always been incomparable, and always WILL BE.

Exactly, you Can't live in the past. It is exactly as the Kingsmen song says, "My Past is Passed"

I think they're great right now... I'm looking forward to their next album, and what they have to offer. I believe that in 10-20 years, we'll be saying "remember this lineup, wow, they were great!"

Hmmm, this reminds me of a "poem" I copied out a long time ago:

These are
the good
old days.

Just wait
and see.

Matt I love your avatar. Just can't figure out if that's a tenor singer or just a hungry baby.

He's reaching for those low notes... That's what happens when he surrounded by quartet singing (especially Gold City)!

Jim, I certainly agree with you. I was just making an observation, not presenting an opinion or making a judgement on their new versus old music in my above-quoted post. Also, the fact that this was their first trip back to the area since Aaron started might have affected the crowd. We were all Gold City hungry, and their concert lineup effectively recognized that and gave something for everyone.

I don't think there is anything wrong with comparing the past lineup with the current lineup. I haven't had the chance to hear the current lineup live, but I'm sure they are wonderful. I did get to hear Daniel Riley sing with GC before he joined the group. I LOVE his voice!! I miss Mark Trammell and Jay Parrack, but I know that the current members are very good, too. I do have to say, though, my favorite lineup was David Hill, Jay Parrack, Tim Riley, and Mark Trammell.

I agree! But then again, I have loved listening to David Hill since he was with the Anchormen *mumble* years ago.

I just picked up an old GC cassette entitled "Hymns Sung By Gold City Quartet". Does anyone know who the tenor was on this project? The other members in the photo are Tim Riley, Ivan Parker, Jerry Ritchie, and Garry Jones. Thanks for the help!

According to my source that would have been Benny Blackburn. Brian Free was in school at the time.

OK, just me being picky here...BUT....we were redirected here because there were too many Gold City Threads. (agreed 100%)

Yet there are 2 threads still active for a certain group that shall remain nameless but they have a distinct
"Signature Sound" about them. we need one of them shut down to keep it fair and balanced.

pretty please?

Generally, things have to get really bad before the moderators step in.

While things aren't bad now, there was enough controversy over Gold City in the past that the moderators felt this thread was necessary, and now that it's in place they enforce it.

Generally speaking, if we are self-disciplined enough, they don't have to discipline us.

didnt take long for someone to pop up and get to the SSQ rescue huh?
I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but airing grievances in the threads is usually frowned upon. If you like you can email community@salemwebnetwork.com and mention it there.
