I think the toenail count may be up to five.......

Yikes! And was the hike fun?

Actually, yes. The other two staffers were not only able, they were extremely fun. And we had three teenage guys, three girls. (I'd name 'em, but the hikers are all underage, so I can't.) I ate unnameable food , saw interesting things lit on fire , watched the guys chase down innumerable critters just to photograph 'em (including a rattlesnake that decided to hang out on the path ), got blisters , watched others manage to nick/slice/serrate themselves with their own knives/hatchets , carried 35 pounds on my back , wore the same outfit for DAYS , slept very little but appreciated all of it , got the trail name of "Silvertoes" from a serious love of duct tape , laughed a lot , cried a bit , hiked 55 miles and did the last 13 of it mostly uphill.

Yep, it was good. The feet are just a minor side effect.

And Rachel, this is the pair of Teva sandals I'm wearing at the moment. I like 'em, they're comfortable, and tough enough to work/work out in.

Ok, if I had any doubts you were nuts, you've just confirmed it. Can you tell I don't like hiking?

.... maaan! It did sound like an awesome time!!! (I love things that give people a great sense of accomplishment...)

I LOVE those sandals!!! Oh my goodness... and I loved a bunch more, too!!! Very cool looking shoes!!

I think getting good shoes is sometimes better than trying to make cheap ones 'do'.... because you are never truly happy with the cheap ones.... and they fall apart a lot faster....

I can't really afford Birks... but I coughed up the $$ to order another pair of my favorite style of Batula's.... my last ones lasted for like 5 years... I'm tempted to get them re-treaded...

Hey DebbieLynne!! What shoes are most comfortable for you?

Rachel, my feet are so deformed from Cerebral Palsy that I can only wear Isotoner ballet slippers in summer and boot-type slippers (with soft soles) in winter. For really cold weather, I have quilted wrap-around boots with sheepskin linings. But shoes aren't my favorite topic, since I'm so limited in what I can wear.

I'm not pleased with John's wheelchair company. He's been waiting since April 23rd. They came today, and half the stuff was missing. The batteries hadn't even been ordered! And the footplates were the wrong size. That company may quit doing wheelchairs anyway (oxygen supplies is more lucrative), so hopefully my company will pick him up.

Darcy, so despite everything, sounds like the AT hike was worth it. May I hazzard a guess that you'll pursue a career working with kids?

Deb, I'm sorry John is having so many problems with his wheelchair. Is there somebody else you can hire to get the job done properly? It's gotta be frustrating for John not being as mobile as he could be.

Trish, the government's paying, so if we switch companis mid-order, we may never see the job finished. I don't think people realize what a mess socialised medicine is!

Sorry you're having so much trouble with the company that's supposed to fix John's chair. I agree with you about socialized medicine.

Merv just got back from church camp. It was a frustrating and tiring week for him. Our camp has different churches take turns being deans and this was a first time group in charge. I use the term in charge loosely because, apparently, it was complete chaos. Whenever Merv tried to make suggestions, they informed him that they were in charge and he should butt out. The saddest part was that they didn't feel that Jr high kids could handle much Bible time. The kids were kept going from 7:30 am till after midnight every day, but only had about and hour of Bible total in the whole day. This was a huge group of campers and only one child made a decision for Christ. There was also a problem with kids running loose in the middle of the night, but, once again, they were in charge and Merv wasn't supposed to worry about it.

This seeker sensitive, all fun no Bible approach seems to be the way our churches are headed, and it scares me for the future. Merv said there was one period when his cabin wouldn't settle down so he and a helper took the kids into the woods and had a Bible lesson. He said the kids were so hungry to learn. They kept asking him questions and didn't want to leave when it was time to do something else. The deans had said they didn't want to be Bible beaters, but these kids were really hungry for God's word and not getting what they needed. It makes me want to cry.

.... wow. That's a bummer, Sue....

I can say, though... not all seeker friendly camps are headed in that direction.

At the church I came from.... they have special camps addressing special things... yeah... they do basketball camp... etc. But they only use the interest to point the kids to Christ.

They even try to do a camp which helps kids know how to witness to their friends...

I'm sorry about John's chair too.... what a let down!

I'm sure there are good groups out there. Our camp sessions vary depending on the people in charge. Merv is going to try to work at a different session next year.

I have no problem with camp being fun, it should be tons of fun. There just needs to be time for learning and growing too. What saddens me is that the world has no problem shoving its values down our kids throats, but many of the churches are afraid that kids will turn away if we show them the Truth. So, the kids may stay, but they aren't getting anything of eternal value from the experience.

Man, Sue...that's sad. I think there's a place for fun, but it shouldn't eclipse Scripture. I'm also alarmed by the seeker sensitive movement. When I got saved in high school, I voluntarily attended two (sometimes three) Bible Studies a week...and I'm talking verse-by-verse exposition! My church now tries to offer expository preaching, but doesn't quite pull it off. John and I keep praying, though!

Kids often will live up to or down to people's expectations. The leaders are the ones who are supposed to know what is really important in life, and should do their best to find ways to convey it to the young people.

If leaders communicate to kids that entertainment is all they are capable being given then then they will settle for it.

We need to pray for our youth leaders to have faith that those God is calling to salvation and Christian maturity will be able to handle Bible teaching, especially if it includes lessons on applicaton that can be put into practice right then and there, and for a lifetime afterwards.

Sort of! I'm mapping my runs on a running website so I can keep track of my running/biking online. I'm popping in here between maps...
