Hi everyone,
Talking of cold weather (aren't we? ) Hervey bay had the coldest day on record yesterday at -1. Today we had a temperature of -3!!! You can have Canada and the Artic they are certainly safe from me . For sure.

Talking of Australian birds, you will find plenty of photos on my ilaugh site down below. Cheers everyone. Thursday is being touted as a cold day so I'm off to bed.

Freezing, frozen Frigid
That's me!

Buddy, it has to be at least a couple of degrees warmer where you are than down here in Brissie. You're closer to the Equator.

It's supposed to be 10-19 degrees today with possible thunderstorms. We could certainly use the rain. Temperatures aren't too bad for this time of year.

Hi everybody. How are you all doing?

Well, we got our thunderstorms on Monday. Our place got it's own internal water feature as the rain came down the brickwork inside, down the kitchen/lounge area. There's a tradesperson coming to take a look at it on Monday. Hopefully no more problems when we have more thunderstorms today. Some of southern Perth ended up with a mini tornado going though it and knocking out roofing, walls and all sorts of things.

Absolutely right Kylie. That's what the Estate agent told me too!!. Nevertheless -1.2 was the temperature. However the -3 turned out to be a complete furphy by the met mob(something to do with the wind chill factor being added in, which was reasonable, believe me). Regardless, the average morning temperature for July was 6 degrees lower that for last year and that is cold. The local oldies are saying it's the first real winter we've had for years. I'm not encouraging them.
I remember in the sixties at Julia Creek, if the temperature dropped to 60 F, we were all rushing back into the station for jumpers and such.

Yes, I've had moments where I've wondered if I was back in Sydney or Dubbo this Winter. I swear I had frost on my windscreen a couple of mornings recently.

No, definitely frost.

I'm getting the spring cleaning bug so it must be warming up. Today I cleared everyone else's junk off my desk in the office. It's amazing how tidy my space is and how disgusting theirs' is when their junk is in their spaces.

I am heading to NZ for a month in a couple of weeks and half of my company has moved there for a project. Any good advice? I'll be in Snells Beach outside Auckland for atleast one week of work, but other than that im gonna get my travel on. Gonna have a 2 year old and a 6 mo preggo wife in tow tho so i doubt ill be doing much bungie jumping.

I have been Tivo-ing as much stuff on NZ as possible... travel shows, Flight of the Conchords(lol), Once were Warriors, etc...

so whats the deal with Aussies and Kiwis? i have been sensing a playful rivalry in which Aussies feel they are superior. Is this for real? My best friend and co-worker is an Aussie citizen and he is a real goober.

Gday everybody.

Hi Dangel, nice to meet you.

Yes, there is a bit of rivalry between the Aussies and Kiwis, but it's usually pretty harmless. There's often rivalry in sports, and lots of comments thrown around about the differences in accents. You'll probably pick up the accent difference once you're in New Zealand. They won't sound like your Australian friend, (says she who used to have a New Zealand accent).

I don't know much about Auckland, as I didn't spend much time there, other than at the airport, going to and from Australia. Maybe one of the others could help you there.

The way that the Maori people acted on Once Were Warriors can be true. If you've seen Whale Rider, the Maori traditions portrayed in that movie are true too.

Where were you thinking of travelling on to?

Oh Kevin Rudd visited a strip joint in New York when he was there for foreign minsitry work in 2003. He says he was too drunk to remember what happened there. He admits it was a mistake. The media are saying good on him, he is human etc etc. But because he says he is this devout Christian and is trying to drum up our votes I was just wondering what others thought of him.

Kiaora everyone
Long time I been here too....scuse me if I skip the cuppa and catchup, and go directly to the "blessed" dude who is relocating to "The land of the long white cloud"

Hey DangelWngs, I'm from Auckland, sounds like you arrive in what will offically be Spring but don't hold your breath, Auckland is reknown for crazy weather, 4 seasons in one day Buuut, it's actually been warmin up, still - invest in thermals or fleece. Its also quite wet and damp If your out Snells beach it'll be colder.

Funny, at work we're awaiting the arrival of a young couple from Texas this week, who are coming here to work for us, so we been in the throes of preparing to settle them in. If you have any specific questions just ask.

Now as for Once Were Warriors...awesome, real, true of its depiction, as Cherish said. BUT, not all Maori are like that. I met an American earlier this year who thought he was gonna get off the plane and be met with Jake Heke's at every corner??? Whatever you've read or researched, keep an open mind. You'll find a big multicultural city surrounded by lotsa water filled with friendly people with funny accents who speak too fast and drive on the right side of the road

Nope, not going to get met by Jake Heke's everywhere. Just saying that some Maori people can be like that, but not all. I used to live up the road from the Mongrel Mob when I was growing up.

I really think it's more a case of 'some human beings can be like that'.

One of the guys dh grew up close to is now married to the daughter of the head of the Rebels bike club in the area they lived (mostly white Australians).

When we first lived in Sydney we were only a couple of streets away from Telopea St (known for a particular middle Eastern family).

Dh worked in the street where the Macquarie Field riots occurred (yet again mostly white Australians).

Redfern is a known problem area as is the Gordon Estate in Dubbo where I grew up (Aboriginal families).

Seriously, I think if you could name a culture you could find an area where there are known troublemakers of that culture who choose to live pretty rough lives and whose children, by default, have those lives thrust upon them.

It's one of the reasons that I never judge someone based on what they look like or what their culture is, because I only have to look a few miles up the road to see people from my own culture making equally bad choices.

Kylie

Very true, Kylie.

On the whole, Maori families are very loving, family orientated people. Really welcoming. The same as with other cultures. Didn't mean to imply that certain cultures are really bad.
