thanks for the weather report
there must have been a traffic jam of people trying to get there.
We have had downpours for the last week which is so nice for the garden and for me not having ot water as i have to buy water to put in the cistern.

We are having VBS this week (vacation Bible school) of which i am coach and i just had a talk to my son who wants to come with me that he needs to listen to me tomorrow otherwise he will be in the babysit. No idea on the results of that chat

Well enjoy the cooler weather people and we will enjoy the humidity with the rain

I wish there were snowfields closer to where I live...I wanna go skiing again. I'll have to start saving for a holiday back to NZ.

Took me about 5 minutes to de-ice my car this morning before I could leave for work - it was our coldest overnight temperature so far this winter.

You could go skiing in NSW or Victoria. A friend of mine went skiing in Victoria a couple of weeks ago. Having said that, NZ is beautiful. Then again, I am biased.

Joyce, how's the VBS going?

I was considering a ski holiday to one of the eastern states but then I thought that I want to go back to NZ, this time as a tourist. Maybe I can try and convince Jesse that when (and who knows when!) we get married we can honeymoon in NZ.

I was in Blenheim for 3 months on exchange so I went to Malborough Girls College - my one and only all girls school experience - I hated it (the school, not the exchange - I loved that!) Blenheim's a nice place though. And the NZ accent is awesome.

Kia ora!!!

While I'm not from NZ / Australia, I have hosted exchange students who were from NZ. One was from Hastings (Hawkes Bay -- North Island) and the other was from Takaka (Golden Bay -- South Island)

So, does it still burn people's britches if people confuse the accents?? When our students first arrived, someone outside of our family commented on the "Aussie accent" and I guarantee the person who made that comment has never confused the two again .......... LOL

hi peoples

As for accents; I live in Canada and here they are pretty picky with being called American as in they really dont like you getting confused but in my experience I dont think Aussies care too much. Here i get tired of people drooling at the accent - the first year was fun but after that "please just put my groceries thru, i really didnt come shopping to help you find some great uncle is some obscure town off the beaten track :"

VBS was really great - first time i had done it but i sure was beat afterwards, thats what comes from living a lazy life for 4 months just taking care of a 4yo

Have any of you ever done VBS???

Hi Joyce! You are about three hours away from me (I see from your info line you're in Hamilton ... I'm in Sarnia). And yes, a lot of Canadians will get their knickers in a knot if you imply they sound/act American ... my thought is usually "get over it ... we're supposed to be neighbours!"

Yeah ... the students we hosted eventually got weary from everyone commenting on how interesting their accents were ... and then when they went home, their friends were commenting on how they had "Canadian" accents!!!

Hi Kara, Joyce.

Kara, I used to live a couple of hours north of Hastings. My oldest brother and his family used to live there just before he moved to Australia earlier this year.

I've got American penpals, and they ask me about the difference between the New Zealand and Australian accents. Some assume it's just the same. So I tell them some of the differences. I think it's funny. When I got to Australia, I was always teased about my New Zealand accent. When I call New Zealand, I get teased about my Australian accent. It's more Australian now than New Zealand. Has been for years. Only if I'm REALLY tired, will the occasional word come out. I guess I'm not being constantly asked to talk though to have people hear my accent.

I love the Canadian accent. The way it sounds like 'oat' instead of 'out'. I have a hard time telling some American accents from the Canadian accent. If I know there's a Canadian around though, or on TV, I just love listening to it, but I won't make a point of asking somebody to speak just so that I can hear them. If I need a Canadian accent 'fix', I watch "Anne Of Green Gables".

Yeah, I enjoy accents. I am sure that you would have no problem telling most of the southern US accents from the various Canadian ones. Accents from the northern tier of states would probably be a bit more tricky. I grew up near Chicago which is considered the "neutral" US accent and is what you hear on TV and movies from the US (unless they are purposefully being ethnic/regional).

Unfortunately, I never was clear on the difference between an NZ accent and Australian. My gf and her siblings had been in the US long enough that their accent had softened a lot. Her brother Mark was always "putting on" accents, mostly various English (oxford, cockney, etc) ones.

Most Aussies here seem impressed I can tell they are not from Great Brittan.

Hi
that is so cool - just imagine if we bumped into each other and we met on crosswalk/com :)

Is Sarnia north of me or are you almost on the border of the states???

If you are north i hope to meander up that way to do some camping with my son, if i have the courage to take an active newly adopted 4yo up camping alone :)

You wouldnt believe the places that have been guessed as my home of origin.
There are the normal ones, NZ, South africa, england... but the most amusing ones were Croatia and someone had me pegged down to a particular shire in the south of England. Makes me smile to think on it:)

Joyce

PS Im jsut enjoying a lovely cold coffee (the aussie way) and some chiken in a biskit which i didnt realize i had until a week ago!!!!!!!!!!

We're off to a paediatric specialist this afternoon. Please pray that they can figure out what is going wrong with X's breathing. Her Xray showed a slight inflation of her lungs but nothing that is obviously wrong so they've slotted her in between patients this afternoon (we've had a doctor to the house and a trip to the hospital the last two nights).

Let us know how it goes, Kylie.

I know southern American accents and some others. Just need to work out what's American, and what's Canadian.

I wrote this on my blog today about where we are. As you can read today was a wonderful day with some beautiful realizations.

Some days I am overwhelmed with being where I am in life. Especially where we both are today in life. And today it struck me so much that it brought tears to my eyes. Ok I was reading a book which brought me to tears too but at the same time Bubba’s situation also sprung up tears too. Over the last week I have noticed how much he has progressed in his development since he came home. But today it really hit me how normal he is becoming. His play is so appropriate. He was happily kicking around a little plastic container as if it was a soccer ball, sometimes high and sometimes low. But he just kept on with kicking. And it struck me that God has provided for him the stability and the normality of life to give him the chance to experience safely, love, joy, stability, consistency, the same bed at night, the same house, the same backyard, the same piano … that everyday he can move forward. His imagination is growing in leaps and bounds.. so much joyful stuff that I get to see. And I sat there with tears of joy to realize that God took him out of foster care and said “here is your forever Mum and forever life, never to be shipped around again”. What a beautiful thing to realize and what a beautiful gracious gift Bubba has received. On the flip side, how much our lives have been so stable in comparison to him and to so many others who will spend part or maybe all their life in foster care, never to be able to call anything or anyplace or any person - theirs. My heart hurts for them – while at the same time rejoices for him and for me that we get to enjoy our lives so much

Edited to give some background for people reading who dont know our situation - my Bubba came home 5 months ago as an almost 4 yo to be adopted by me, a single parent.
