I always thought "roughing it" meant you needed an extension cord for the computer power supply.[:D]

The definition of roughing it is when you use rabbit ears to get you TV stations instead of a satellite dish. [:D]

It's also walking no more than ten steps to the tv to turn it off instead of using the remote from your chair or couch. [:D]

Hmph. (hands on hips, dripping sarcasm) Well, that'll won't be much of a change from the latter days, now will it??

Seriously...you haven't been around as much as usual, John...your humor has been missed...

This is typical with John during the summer - he's actually having a life off the forums.

Enjoy your time with everyone, John!

I did not know that, but thank you for passing that tidbit of information my way. :)

2 Sam 8-12

The story of David and Bathsheba and Nathan holds an important lesson. And probably not the one most people think of.

David was the Lord's anointed. So many times we hear people harp on "Touch not the Lord's anointed". I've found that usually if a pastor says that then he is misleading (abusing) his church. Being a pastor does not make one unaccountable. David was king. The Lord's anointed for that time and place. Yet when he sinned God still sent someone to confront him with it.

We are to be accountable one to another. The pastor is to be accountable to the lowliest member of the congregation just as much as that lowly member is to be accountable to the pastor.

(sorry. soapbox moment there. I had a few very brief run-ins with abusive leadership and it sets my teeth on edge. They normally hated me as I was never afraid to confront them with their wrongs. And that fearlessness came from David and Nathan)

John:

Do you think it is scripturally sound for a woman in a congregation to confront the male pastor of that congregation when he is wrong?

I have had run-ins with abusive leadership, too...

I seem to remember a judge in the OT named Deborah. I also seem to remember when God used a donkey to get the word across. I also seem to remember a disembodied hand that he used once.

I think God is more concerned that the truth gets to the person in need of it than he is with the sex of the person delivering it.

I don't seem to recall any of the "one another's" explicitly disqualifying females. While I do believe that there are certain roles reserved to one sex or the other I don't think one-on-one correction is one of them.

There's been far too many abusive leaders. It seems some people get "called by God" and "called God" confused.

All too true, John.

When you have confronted these abusers, has there ever been a time when the pastor actually displayed repentance?

I think I remember some short term changes in one guy. It was a while ago so I don't remember for certain. Almost all the other discussions were ignored totally or given lip service. In those cases I'd left as soon as God released me to. (All those churches suffered splits or severe membership drops shortly thereafter. At least I saw truthfully)

2 Sam 19-24

Quick note. The story of David and Absalom shows us a picture of how God deals with us.

Absalom rebelled against his father, misused him, tried to kill him and humiliate him. Yet when Absolam died David mourned him greatly. Such was his love for his son that even when that son rebelled he still loved him and wanted only the best for him.

Likewise we rebell against God and yet he loves us so much that he always welcomes us back and forgives us. He mourns for us wehn we are away from him and rejoices when we are restored.
