I have just recently been a part of the week long services at the Carolina College of Theology in Wilmington, North Carolina. Dr. J. L. Cook is the founder and president and we heard from many preachers who he has had an effect on through his church and school. We also heard some great music. Lulu Roman was there and was wonderful. After losing her close friend, Dottie Rambo, she was still so sensitive to God and such a blessing to all of us. Eighth Day was also there. Good, southern gospel music with that old country style. They had just hired a new baritone singer and were a great asset to the week. Hope to hear more from them soon. There was also a man by the name of Ben Kirk. A very good praise and worship singer. He reminded me of a young Bill Shivers and was a blessing as well. There were several other soloists throughout the week as well. It was a great time and God showed up to have church with us. Just wanted to share it all with you.

Family Fest 2008 Part 4 - Sunday Morning As usual, the Sunday morning service was more like church. The artists generally sang slow songs and hymns. The Voices of Lee, a college choir from Lee University, performed beautifully. Buddy Greene, backed by the Isaacs, was especially good. The Collingsworth family sang acapella - one of the few times I have enjoyed acapella. The highlight for me was a video of Lily Isaacs visiting a site in Germany where her mom was interred in a concentration camp. Exceptionally moving. As stated before, I defend a group's right to wear what they want, but one of my favorites, Signature Sound, pushed the envelope. They were dressed in faded and/or torn jeans and untucked polo shirts, which I thought was a tad too casual for the circumstances. They sounded good though. Ann Graham Lotz delivered the message and it was outstanding. The topic was Heaven and the sermon was very educational. If you didn't want to go before, you sure would after listening to Ann. Afterward, I decided to go make purchases at the Collingsworth Family product table. I found that they do not sell on Sunday. Instead, you take away what you want and they send you a bill for it (seems like a distinction without a difference to me, but I respect their wishes). What you do is: Take whatever product you want, mark what you took on a piece of paper, and write down the name and address where you want the bill sent. Luckily, I had Daniel Mount's address in my PDA. Time to go load the entire Collingsworth Family collection into iTunes.

I saw you liked the acapella number--wow. If they're getting you to tolerate piano solos and acapella, that's amazing. The Collingsworth Family IS amazing! Love 'em!

I just saw Gold City in Sumter, SC on Saturday night for the Free Will Baptist Children's Home Benefit Singing....in a few words, it was AMAZING!!!! Wow, those guys were totally ready to minister to us!! They actually went way over on time for the first set and sang for an hour and fifteen minutes straight, they sang a great mix of old and new songs and was just all around a true blessing. Right before we had a break for intermission Bruce was singing "I'm Not Giving Up" and all of a sudden a bat starts flying around the stage. All of the other guys saw the bat and everyone in the audience was laughing and staring at the bat the whole time....poor Bruce didn't even know anything was going on. I saw him after the song asking Steve what was going on, and once he found out he was laughing hysterically!! Bruce definitely was not going to "give up or turn around" because of a distracting bat :) After GC was done with the first set the kids from the children's home got up to sing a few songs themselves and they were just precious!! They have a wonderful ministry down there and those kids are truly loved!! I'm so thankful for ministries like those!! After intermission the guys only had a few minutes to sing b/c it was almost time to be totally out of the building. Bruce sang "Midnight Cry" and did an INCREDIBLE job...that guy can sing!!! He truly is an amazing addition to GC! Overall I came away wishing we could have stayed there longer!! It was totally worth the 3 hour drive in the smultering 101 degree weather!! Can't wait to see them again in two weeks!!!

I am so glad to hear that Bruce is working out so well for them. I'm going to see GC in a couple of weeks and I'm looking forward to it.

Family Fest 2008 Part 5 - Sunday afternoon After stocking up on Collingsworth Family product (thanks again Daniel), we went back to the room for a little rest. We then had a wonderful surprise as Debbie (G.I.Mom) and husband Bill came by to visit. We had planned to meet with them, but didn't swap accurate seating info, and we were oblivious to the signs they held up with our names on them. We had a great visit. Bill and Debbie are interesting, kind, fun Godly people. We all talked for a long time and enjoyed every minute of it. Hope that we can see them again soon.

Saw the MTT last night at Mud Creek Baptist Church in Hendersonville, NC. This is always a special service for them. The MCBC choir is AWESOME!!! MTT doesn't do a full concert - they do about 30 minutes, after the choir sings and then the pastor or an assoc pastor preaches. It is always a blessing to be a part of the service there. MTT did a great job and Mark's brother Jerry is traveling with them. Got to give him a little grief and that was fun! Mark and the guys just grinned when they found out that Alicia and Erin are also going on the cruise in Feb with us. Mark said 'hmm, gives us a whole week to spoil that young'un rotten'! Looking forward to Friday night when we will see them in full concert! Then they leave for vacation. We were laughing that we would be at their last concert before they leave on vacation and the first one after they get back from vacation. Walter said 'boy you guys are gluttons for punishment!'

Was Eric Phillips also with them? Did Jerry Trammell just do some solo songs, or did he sing in place of Eric on some / all songs?

Family Fest 2008 Part 6 - Sunday night We were 25 minutes late (probably due to the Baptist nap we took after Debbie and Bill left). Our new friends had told us they brought a goodie box for us, and they were true to their word. They brought us a huge pan of homemade cinammon rolls, a box with about two dozen homemade cookies, and a jar of homemade peach preserves). We had to fight off the Family Festers around us, but managed to get home with most of the goodies intact. They didn't last long. Everything was delicious, and the preserves were about the best I ever had. I know now what it's like to be a Southern Gospel artist (at least from a food perspective). After intermission, which comes earlier on Sunday night, the artists all assemble on stage and sit in chairs in a classic "homecoming" style concert. This is one of my favorite parts of the weekend. Prior to intermission, there was some good singing and, as promised, Dottie Rambo songs were featured. My main memories are another good Gene McDonald solo (I really didn't appreciate him fully before Family Fest), and the ventriloquist was again hilarious. There is a particularly funny bit where the choir sings a fast paced song and everyone jumps up at a certain point (kind of like Sunday school). Bill Gaither will try to start a story and Ben Speer will jump up and start the song again. this goes on several times until Bill takes his microphone away. Then Bill tries to start the song and nobody joins in. Ben says "some of us got it, and some of us ain't." No matter how many times I hear this act, I enjoy it. One thing that I missed is the group doing several Patriotic songs (it is Memorial Day). By "missed", I mean that they didn't do them. As I said, I was 25 minutes late, but I don't believe the group did them early. It is usually in the Homecoming part. The concert ended 15 minutes earlier than usual, so I wonder if Bill just forgot to do the Patriotic songs. One of the highlights of the weekend was footage of George Younce, Jake Hess, Howard and Vestal Goodman, J.D. Sumner, Dottie Rambo and others blended in with the singing of the choir. This was done seamlessly and professionally. In fact, when the choir was singing and George Younce first appeared on the big screen, it was so realistic that many of us gasped - for just a second, it seemed like George was actually there. I don't think that I have mentioned Gloria Gaither's readings/recitations. I know that some people don't enjoy poetry or prose readings (I'm normally one of them), but I think that Gloria's are absolutely wonderful. We have purchased our tickets for next year. It is difficult to convey in words how truly great the Family Fest weekend is. It is something that you have to experience to fully appreciate. I hope more of y'all join us on Memorial Day weekend, 2009.

Tonight in Jacksonville, FL the Kingsmen invited our very own Singing News Forum's sgpianoman to accompany them while they sang Glory Road. He did an awesome job!!!! It was great to see the Kingsmen in a small church setting. They sounded great, they were relaxed, and they sang a great mix of old and new songs. I bought their special....a bag full of dvd's and cd's including their new one for only $40. There was no opening act....so we got almost 90 minutes of The Kingsmen...a great way to start the weekend. I am sure Steven will post more details about tonights concert. Great job Steven!

We went to see the Whisnants last night at the Carmi, IL, Church of God. We had not seen them for a few years, the last time being shortly after Aaron Hise started traveling with them. Although the crowd was somewhat sparse, the music and the spirit was good. The only negative in that regard was that the opening regional group (who had actually booked the Whisnants there) sang 45 minutes, which we felt was too long, when opening for a mainstream group like the Whisnants. The Whisnants were very good. They sang a mixture of new and old songs, and seemed to know exactly when to do an encore. They also did a great job of mixing upbeat and slow songs in the program. A highlight for me was a new song, "The Past is a Promise". The message of that song just hit me where I am right now with occupational problems and discouragement. I think it could be a potential number one song. Another highlight was an older song of theirs, "Even In the Valley", a song I have liked since the first time I ever heard it. Aaron also sang "He Loves Me", with no soundtrack, just Eric on the keyboard and Jeff & Susan singing harmony on the chorus, and it was really beautiful and touching. (That is the same song that is on the Greater Vision "Quartets" project, featuring Eric Bennett as the guest bass, and was already a favorite of mine.) Finally, I can't finish this review without a word about Eric Ollis, their keyboard player. We have seen him many times during his long tenure with the Dixie Melody Boys, and always liked him. He has not missed a beat since joining the Whisnants. He still has the most dead-pan and funny facial expressions this side of Rodney Griffin, and still lets out his excited "Whoo" upon occasion. Besides that, he is a great keyboard player. We were really glad we went, and dearly wish they would come to S IL more often. One other note, Jeff said that the price of diesel was just killing them, but that God had provided when it was $.75 per gallon and that He would provide when it is $5/gal, too.
