Someone on this thread takes every "negative" comment about the Kingsmen way too personally. One of the reasons we have this forum is to post our opinions. Naurally many will not agree. I personally love the Kingsmens current line up. What i like the most seems to be their spirit and message. They are no longer Big and Live, but i like the new Kingsmen. I especially like Brian Hutson. Phillip has grown on me and i am liking him better and better. Harold is good. These are just opinions and while it is OK to agree or disagree, should we be attacking anyone who doesn't feel the same we we feel?

Why not????? Obviously you are! I know that you mean me but if you read this thread you would obviously know that there is another here who asked the same questions as me.
I totally agree that all are entitled to their own opinion but when one makes an open ended statement there needs to be some clarification. You all seemed to assume that I made my comment based on who I am but I have been around SG for my entire life and long before Harold was a Kingsmen I would defend them to the end. Not that I think they should have to be defended but just because they are a great bunch of men who deserve to be treated withg respect. Thay are not the only ones that I would speak out just the ones mentioned here.
Over the years I have seen many changes with the Kingsmen and other groups and some changes have been for the better and not so good. But it is sorta like cheering for your favorite sports team....win or lose...new players or not....you still cheer for them.
So as for me....I will keep cheering for The Kingsmen!

I do understand that your comment was made based on your love for SG music, and the amount of time you have been a fan.
Mine was too. I have had every Kingsmen album since Wish You Were Here, and probably a dozen of thier older stuff, going from the early 70's and I think covers about every lineup since then. I am by no means an authority on the group, but I do think (to my ears) that I know what sounds bad, fair, decent, good, great, excellent and super duper!! I think the new group falls into the good category.
I liked your analogy of being a fan. Except when my fav. team has players that I feel hurt the team, I think they need to be replaced. I still cheer for them, though.

If you don't care to put on your "sister of the tenor" hat, have the Kingsmen made any plans for after Ray's retirement? Even though I dont love the current lineup, they are still one of my fav's, and have a deeper history than most. (They are still in the top 3 currently) and I'd hate to see them not continue on when he decides to sit back and rest (he deserves it)!!!

That's a great interview with Ray. I have seen it before. It really doesnt answer it though.
I'm not, nor have ever been an insider in SGM, but it seems that a lack of planning is what gave us the "Carolina Boys" years. If back before Eldridge died, there had been a plan in place, maybe Ray would have liked to take over then, if Greg didnt plan to. I dont know this to be true, its probaby not. Greg may have just wanted to make money off the name....like I said I'm not inside that kind of loop, so I dont know.

Well I think the point is....Ray makes no mention of quitting any time soon. Ray is a business man who looks to the future.
And as for saying things you do not know to be true....those things are most often best left unsaid as this is how rumors start.
And there are always those thing one does know but in the words of my good friend Joe Fowler...."I'm not at liberty to say"

Speculation will only turn into rumor if the one who speculates doesnt make it clear that he/she is speculating. I say alot, and I do mean alot of stuff that I dont know the truth of, but I make it clear when I am doing so. Life would be pretty boring if no one ever speculated or made guesses, or discussed "what ifs", and "I wonder's"...

I will venture a guess that Ray retires by the end of 2010. He'd be almost 72 by then.

In honor of my terrific, very blessed experience last night with an anointed group, and my new found favorites, I have changed my login.
The Kingsmen have long been my favorite group, but with the current lineup lacking in some areas, BFA is now my number 1 Quartet, with Gold City at number 2 and the Kingsmen sadly number 3. The boys from Asheville need to get on the ball!!!!

"Current lineup lacking"? "Need to get on the ball?"

Ok, details. IMO, the current group is the best the Kingsmen have sounded vocally in YEARS.

Yeah this I would LOVE to hear!!!!! I have followed The Kingsmen for years and I would be VERY interested in where you feel the Kingsmen are lacking!!! But then I guess it is easy to make vague statements that give no specifics and cause others to wonder what EXACTLY you mean. So please humor us and favor us with your opinion. It seems everyone is a critic these days. Hey.....do you know if BFAA charge to sing at churches?????

I disagree. I dont think they sound nearly as good as they did a few years back. The lineup was rock solid in the middle 90's. The switch from Chris Collins to Jerry martin was flawless. Jerry was wonderful.
Then when Bryan left and Randy Crawford came in, again wonderful..and no fall off.
Then Derrick Boyd came in and Tim Surrett came back. Tim's voice was not nearly as strong as it was in the past (as an acid reflux problem confirmed) Derrick was good, but not Kingsmen good.
Jeremy Peace came aboard and was excellent, but then came Phillip Hughes, and combined with Tim's weakening voice, The Past has Passed was a disappointing album.
Tony Peace came in to replace Tim on Good Good God and wasnt a terribly good Baritone. You could almost hear him breathing when he would sing on alot of slower songs. It seemed as if he had to put alot of effot into it, just to get it out.
Bryan came back and of course was great, but Phillip is still there.
Jeremy out and Harold in. No missed beat here. Harold is probably the best since Jerrry Martin, and maybe since Chris Collins.

And, I don't know if the church paid BFA, but I know the crowd was not charged. Charged up maybe!!! especially during "Long as I got King Jesus", and "Jesus will PIck You Up"

It seems to me that BillBaileyBFAFan's biggest gripe with Phil is he is too high. Yet, he says the middle 90's with Jerry Martin on tenor and Bryan Hutson on lead was rock solid. Bryan hits some of the same notes Phil does, so in all fairness, if you are going to criticize Phil, you are going to have to criticize Bryan also for the very same reasons (to be fair). Bryan, when he sang lead, sang so high he pushed Jerry Martin up ~ it's the same situation with Phil, technically, yet you sing the praises of Jerry and Bryan and are constantly stating that Phil is too high. Phil is not a tenor, he is a high lead and IMO he does a GREAT job!

I LOVE the current line up and agree with tenorsister and preacherman2210 ~ this is the best the Kingsmen have sounded in years! WE have to remember that these guys are out there serving the Lord and b/c of that they are going to have a target on their back ~ we need to be praising them for their willingness to get out there and minister to us!

One thing I've noticed is how HAPPY everyone is and it really shows in the GREAT INTERACTION they have with one another on-stage! Bryan has a natural gift for sharing spiritual truths and encouraging ppl. I saw the Kingsmen with another group in February and one of the members of the other group talked for 20 MINUTES and said absolutely NOTHING of spiritual value. Bryan kept it short (five minutes) and encouraged and shared with the audience from the Word of God, in other words, he said more spiritually in five minutes than the other guy who went on about non-sense (changing diapers, slamming his wife. etc.) when what ppl really need in this day and age is to be encouraged in the Word! THAT is what I perceive as MINISTRY!!!

It's not just Phil's range, its his voice. I dont think it blends well with the other singers.
I can't in anyway compare Bryan's lead to Phil's. And I dont think Bryan's voice sounds nearly as high as Phil's. I dont know anything about chords or notes, or any technical stuff. I only know how it sounds to my own two ears. And Bryan sounds a lot better to me.

But hey, its fine that you think they sound better now than ever. That means you didnt think they sounded as good back in the 90's. I thought they were better then. Everyone has their own taste. I respect that.
Dream Lineup:
Brian Free, Randy Crawford, Parker Jonathan, Aaron McCune
No way it would or could happen, but would be awesome.

Getting this thread back on topic...

Group of posters attended the Mull Singing at New Hope Church in Kodak, TN last night....I'm sure Dinana will have a better detail and videos when she returns from her weekend marathon of SG concerts!!! Lucky lady!

Anyway...Roarks came out first...first time I've seen them and I will say won't be the last time. I didn't make a list of songs they sang but I can tell you the one Shane Roark wrote and performed about why he didn't go country about brought the house down.
The Booth Bros...what can I say but AWESOME as usual. I loved the Castles in the Sand version they did with Ronnie playing acoustic guitar only. The harmonies were beautiful. Michael's announcement he was running for president also brought the house down. I think you might have a few supporters there Michael! BTW...thanks for the hug!
Ivan Parker...well...we had church last night! He was absolutely wonderful.
The Hoppers...Loved them...first time in several years that I've seen them.
Again Dinana can give a better songlist and review but I must say I think we enjoyed ourselves.

It was a wonderful night at the Mull sing. And backing up what Lynn said all groups did great but Ivan got the most reaction from the crowd. Not sure how many standing ovations he got during his 45 minute set. Saw a few wiping tears when he sang "God Bless The USA". Rather ironic him singing that song in the old Lee Greenwood theater. Wonder how many times Lee sang it there??

And yes the Roarks did great. Shane can really "sang"!!!!!

Funny...I made the same comment to mom last night during that song.

Last night (Sat) I went to my first Brian Free and Assurance Concert and all can say is WOW those guys are great LIVE. They sang three or four new songs, the one that got me though was Oh What a Savior. I had never heard them sing that song and wow was I amazed. Brian is truly blessed, he is also a very nice person I got a chance to talk a little with him he gave my boys L5 a nice complement ( To me) Overall it was an incredible night.

I would definitely recommend going to one of their concerts. I spent quite a bit of money at their product stand lol, I got a picture of the group that they all autographed for me. They are a real blessing to Southern Gospel Music, I hope they will always worship God the way that they do.

Well, I am totally overwhelmed with new concert videos, pictures and CDs from this weekend, so I'm not sure when I'm going to get everything processed and posted!!! For now, I'll just say I had a fabulous time seeing Triumphant, Booth Brothers, Hoppers, Ivan, the Roarks, Garry Jones and Josh Feemster.

We went up to this little Church just above the house last night to hear First Mountain City Quartet from Jasper, GA. We heard them once a couple years ago. They don't sing very much, but we know the lead singer, Bill Siniard, very well. Saw him in Gainesville the other night and he told us they were singing there last night. A pretty good group, sang a lot of old songs. Bill's daughter, Kalie, is in the country show at Dollywood. She has been performing there for several years. She is a very good singer. We've seen her several times when at Dollywood.

Went to see Gary Jones last night . What a blessing, it was a wonderful night . Josh Feemster was there and he and Gary did some songs together . Josh's mother also sang a couple of songs with them . It was good to hear her sing again. I haven't heard her sing in a several years . It was good to see Diana again, and she will have a better run down of the program.

We went to Blue Hill, ME last week and saw Tribute Quartet!! This was the third time we seen them and once again were not dissapointed !! Gary's group keeps getting better and better! Dennis Duggar is one of the best basses I've heard, his tone reminds me a lot of Jeff Chapman!! The new tenor, Brian Alvey was incredable, he puts you in mind of Wes Hampton a little, very nice tone and this was only his sixth time out with the group, WOW!! Gary sounded great and has himself a top notch quartet!! Almost forgot Josh, what can you say about this talented young man, he's got a real crooners tone to his voice when he steps out on a solo!! There latest project is as awsome as the first!! Look for great things from this group and if they are in your area don't miss them!! The quality and balance of entertainment and ministry was second to none!!!

I've really enjoyed their two CDs. I'd like to see them "live" around the Atlanta area. If they
don't come around here, maybe I can see them at NQC in September.
