Georgia-Peach -> RE: A New Group (12/30/2006 9:13:30 AM)

I haven't read this thread yet, but I am already thinking about a healthy way to loose weight while nursing my baby. I know at one time Weight Watchers had a point system for pregnant and nursing moms that gave them enough calories to sustain them and baby. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find this at again or knew what the point range would be for a nursing mother. Weight Watchers is the only diet program I succeed with and really would like to start it again to loose the pregnancy weight. TIA [:)]

SweetLittleErin -> RE: A New Group (12/30/2006 9:50:06 AM)

Talking about bacon...but when I was checking calories, the bacon had fewer calories than pretty much any thing else....and I only have 1 or maybe 2 small slices. Plus I feel I need the protien. I was bad yesterday, not only did I have a big spaghetti lunch (the girl scouts were having a fundraiser). Hubby and I got a craving for pizza...but it was thin crust, and we got a small so there was less temptation to eat more than I should! But I am going back to the gym Tuesday, that should help. I used to do the class two days a week but I think I need to just do some cardio (running, elliptical, or something). I think I would be more results. Losing weight is so hard for me...I usually can get about 10 lbs off but I need to get at least 20....I plateau at 10...then it all comes back really really fast.

artemis -> RE: A New Group (12/30/2006 10:16:23 AM)

I'm having a lot of trouble with asthma right now, so it's almost impossible to exercise. I'm not supposed to do anything very strenuous anyhow because it triggers an attack, but right now, even walking up the stairs to our apartment it difficult. It's a catch-22... I think that if I lost weight, it would help my asthma, but exercising gives me asthma attacks [&:] I'm trying to concentrate mostly on what I eat and doing what little I can with resistance bands. Hopefully when this attack is over, I'll be able to do some walking or something.

lexie -> RE: A New Group (12/30/2006 4:58:54 PM)

Chelle - how soon do you plan on starting the weight watchers? I ask, just because I have had to change my diet big time while nursing - in other words, there is a lot I have had to cut out of my diet, because of Akeelah's stomach. I don't think I could follow any type of diet plan right now. But hey, Akeelah is three weeks old and I have already lost 20 pounds thanks to the birth and nursing!!!

I plan to start exercising on Monday, now that my body is healed from the pregnancy. I want to lose about 20 pounds, but I plan on starting out slow, just walking on the treadmill and then increasing from there. I'm hoping to get in about 20 minutes, 3 times a week in the beginning.

nursediane -> RE: A New Group (12/30/2006 7:06:01 PM)

I joined the Lords Table tonight. It seems to biblically sound. I may not agree with all, but most of the content seems good. As far are the meals.......well I didn't like the liquid only days, because we I am able to go back to work, I will not be able to function on liquids alone. So, I opted for the growling stomach thing. That makes sense. Eat when you are hungry.
I have alot to loose, and with God on my side.....
I need lots of pray.
Thanks to all

mommy824 -> RE: A New Group (12/30/2006 8:56:02 PM)

Chelle, Weight Watchers does have a point system still in place for nursing moms. I signed up online, they have this new Monthy Pass thing. For $40/mo (meetings alone are $13/wk) you get a pass to go to meetings and free website usage. It's a great deal because their website is really expensive.

I suggest anyone that isn't used to doing an eating plan and doesn't want to give any particular food up forever, to try WW. Because of the point system, you don't have to say "NO" to any food. It really teaches you moderation.

Anyway, just FYI... I had a horrific day at work that ended in chocolate crinkle cookies, buckeyes and pizza. [sm=icon_smile_dead.gif] So, it's no surprise that I am up 0.4 lbs. Which really makes me mad at myself because I SO was doing really well. Today's been MUCH better. I don't even know how I'm supposed to use up the rest of my points for the day. So I suppose that's good.

Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

ofa23 -> RE: A New Group (12/30/2006 9:46:44 PM)

Today, I ate too much chocolate satin pie and I am paying for it dearly by feeling very lethargic!! [:(] Tomorrow, should be better because I am giving the rest of the pie away to a friend!! I think the moral of the story is, at least for me, don't have a whole pie sitting around.

ofa23 -> RE: A New Group (12/30/2006 10:05:27 PM)

According, to Myfoodiary.com, I need 2300 calories a day to maintain my weight and produce an adequate amount of breastmilk for my 4 month old son. Now, to loose one pound a week and still maintain adequate breastmilk, I would need to reduce that by 500 calories to 1800.

Another website that might be helpful for nursing moms and is totally free is babyfit.com. Myfooddiary.com is $9.00 for their monthly subscription.

This is a very important statement because I notice when their are foods that are "forbidden" in a diet plan, I seem to want them even more!!

Diane, I looked at that site but did not join, not only because I am diabetic, but also because I am really rebellious toward anyone who attempts to discipline me, other than G-d and because my eating habits are really undisciplined. I do know they have provision (although I don't know what kind) for diabetics.

Please let us know what you think of it, as time goes by. One thing I would be interested in are whether they lean on one for consistantly deviating from their plan and discipline (for example, in not doing the liquid diet thang).

Thank you!!!

crimsonfollower -> RE: A New Group (12/31/2006 2:09:14 PM)

Can I join you ladies?
I have been overweight for all of my teen years and now into my twenties. It seemed like I could never make healthy eating choices and dealt with stress by eating. The weight gain was quick to come on and I know it won't be quick to come back off. I need to lose 50-75 lbs to get to what would be considered normal for my age and bone structure.
I am single and enjoy cooking- so my challenge each evening is to cook healthfuly for one person. Because of low blood sugar, I always have something for breakfast and have several snacks during the day (either crackers, fruit or oatmeal/fruit bars). Because the noon meal is free at my work, I don't have a lot of say about what I eat there. However, I do want to try to watch portion size and cut out the desserts. I am hoping that if I will do a salad and then some type of protein for the evening meal- again watching portion size, I should be doing okay. My water intake is usually pretty good. Where I live, the air is very dry and so your body quickly tells you when you aren't drinking enough water. 64 oz is usually the very min that I can get away with- most of the time, I have to have more :) My main weakness is sodas and baking. I love to bake and then feel like I have to eat all that I bake. I also have challenges in exercising. While I am fairly active at work ( I am a teacher :) Try keeping up with kids all day), I am usually tired by the evenings and have challenges in forcing myself to go back out and walk. One thing that I have done to help is the "National Body Challenge" from Discovery Health. It is an 8 week program that is free that provides both reciepe ideas and exercise plans. I am hoping to be consistant with the exercise plan and then also walk several times a week. I am also going to try to use the reciepes for my evening meals to provide a balanced meal.

Today hasn't been so good [&o]
Breakfast- 2 slices of pumpkin bread and a bar
Lunch- a small salad, and fried chicken (a friend took me out too a chicken place where they just bring you the food- you don't have a say in how it is cooked- it was really good though)
Snack- popcorn ( it had some butter, but not too bad)
Dinner- who knows yet- maybe I can do better then :)
I am going to go for a walk now and do the strengthing exercies for today on the "Discovery Health" site.

This next week will be challenging as I will be at a conference for work most of the week. The hotel does have a gym and hopefully we won't eat out too much at fast-food type places. It always seems easier at a real restaurant where there are more real food items.

Thanks for the accountablity. Maybe I can really make some good choices this time around.
Hope you have a great week,
Beth

Miss Giggles -> RE: A New Group (12/31/2006 2:23:21 PM)

Can you bring your own lunch or would that be rude? I am not sure what kind of lunch you are provided.

I take all the extra stuff I baked to work. They eat it and that solves the problem [:D]

For cooking, you'll probably want to make some stuff you can freeze or turn into other dinners. (like roasted chicken can be cut up for enchiladas, salads, etc).

Get one of those calorie counter books, there are a few things you can get at Fast Food places, it just takes some planning. They're all on sale now because of the New Year.

There are tons of healthy cookbooks - the only kind I let myself buy - so start browsing through those. Cooking Lights a good magazine for ideas as well. I am still working on this - but grilling and baking is healthier than deep frying. Sad I know.

MaybeTomorrow -> RE: A New Group (12/31/2006 2:24:49 PM)

Hey Beth,

In reading your post, I could identify with you a lot being a single girl myself and I also enjoy cooking. My problem is that I feel obligated to eat what I cook...if I like it. Ex: yesterday I made stew and an apple crisp. Don't know why I made stew since I really don't like it and won't it it as leftovers...other than it was super cold yesterday and I was snowed in and had the makings for it. So I ate one bowl and threw the rest out this morning. :( But...the apple crisp. It was good. (stew was good too...just don't like the texture or something). So I ate some yesterday and ate the rest this morning for breakfast. [&o] Now I feel yuck.

BUT as I was reading your post, I wondered about how you'd feel if you still baked, but then gave most of it to your neighbors or took it to work or even better, took it to a food kitchen? It's something I plan to try the next time I decide to make a large meal like I did yesterday. Being single, I know how hard it is to make small amounts of healthy food. I always make too much. And I'm not so good about eating leftovers.

Amy

Welcome, Beth!!!! We loved to have you and thanks for posting your story. I was an elementary teacher, also. I know all about the daily pressures and stresses of being one. Somedays after the kids left, I would close the classroom door, put my feet up on the desk and just veg out eating nice piece of chocolate or something else tasty and full of sugar.[&:]

I rather suspect the sin was in that she didn't share the chocolate with us[:(]

I may have joined this thread before ~ I don't remember ~ but if you'll have me (or have me back[&:]) I'd like to join again.

I need to lose weight ~ lots of weight. Right now I'm feeling kinda disillusioned with even trying cos I lose and my thyroid (it's underactive) goes wrong and I gain it back[:(]. Partly because I don't have then energy to go to the gym as much, partly cos I get down and start eating badly.

artemis, just a thought, but can you do non-areobic exercise? Pilates or something like that? I do something called body balance (body flow in the US) ~ it's gentle and doesn't affect my asthma (which isn't as bad as yours by the sound, but isn't fun).

RepentanceIsRequired -> RE: A New Group (12/31/2006 9:24:44 PM)

Well so far this weekend has been an utter disaster with food, but you know, if you can't beat 'em join 'em!! So I enjoyed all my meals with my family. When we eat out I do a horrible job of selecting good things to eat. So far this weekend it has been Red Lobster, China Jade buffet, and Subway. Not to metion that we let the kids choose a "snack" in which Rae chose a big bag of peanut M&M and Zach chose Hershey's chocolate. Now i have checked the scale and it is bad [&:][&:]

BUT! Never fear, for tomrrow is always a new day and if the weather is beautiful, I will take the kids out to the park or something and get back on track for the rest of the week!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR LADIES!!!!!!!!

LiNdSeY10305 -> RE: Weight Loss Support Group (12/31/2006 10:03:04 PM)

I am overweight... obese by doctors standards. I recently decided to swallow my pride and try doing something about it. Can anyone help me figure out the best program for me? I want to lose about 75 pounds, but I would be happy if I lost 25 - 50. I have been considering gastric bypass or lapband, but I only want to take that route as a last option. I feel that if I can get started down the right path, I can encourage my husband to do the same.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: Weight Loss Support Group (12/31/2006 10:24:03 PM)

I am pretty sure I am considered obese, too, Lindsey. When I was diagnosed with diabetes, they suggest not to count calories but carbs. These are a lot more easy for me to count. I also went to a class, where they taught proportion sizes. That was excellent.

For me, it is not what I ate that kept me overweight but what I drank. I had no clue that i was actually not eating enough, but I was drinking so many sugar-drinks (at the time, Sobe green tea mainly). Is it possible you are overdoing it on one or two items, too? If you pinpoint those and drop them, it could make a major difference. I dropped all sugar-drinks and increased my food-intake. By doing this, I have SLOWLY lost . . . let me go weigh . . . if I remember correctly my beginning weight, 20 pounds on the dot, and that's after eight days of Chanukkah, when I ate some no-nos.

Another thing that has helped my sweet tooth (someone mentioned wisdom teeth helping in this area, but apparently, my wisdom teeth are on strike) is that I found a wonderful spicy-sweet tea with no sugar or other sweetener added, yet it is sweet, sweet, sweet! The sweetness comes from the high concentration of cinnamon -- and cinnamon is like medicine to diabetics. I drink a lot of this tea, supplementing it with Bigelow's Constant Comment, when I don't want something as strong.

When I drink Constant Comment (or eat/drink other things that require sweetener), I sweeten it with agave. Agave, found in health food stores, is recommended for diabetics as a sweetener, because it doesn't mess with the body like sugar does. It is like mild honey. It must be kept refrigerated, once opened. The dark agave can also be used for syrup. I love the stuff: it doesn't taste like nasty chemicals.

I think, though, that each of us has to find their own diet-way -- the one that suits us. Consumer Reports, however, says that of all diet programs, Weight Watchers works best, has the most consistent result, and retains the most long-lasting result. Weight watchers, when I was in it in the '80s, drove me nuts.

Thanks, for the input! I'm not as big on sweets as I was a few years ago, but I still get a killer craving sometimes for something sweet. One of my MAIN problems is that I don't drink enough water... But I am trying to start drinking more. Plus, I work at McDonald's and that helps NONE that I eat that garbage! I tried something new tonight though. I got one of those snack wrap things, but I got it with grilled chicken instead of the chicken select strip, and I ate a Fruit & Yogurt parfait... and the only thing other than water that I've drank is a sprite for breakfast and a milk with my dinner.

What are some of the KILLER foods that I need to look out for and avoid???
