Faith2cGod, I'm your height and weigh a few lbs more than you. But I haven't been 130 since high school. My original weight was about 165 before I gained to where I am now. I would be happy with 150. My goal is 150. I use to find exercising boring. I have been walking faithfully though 5 times a week, for 20 min. , since the beginning of January 2008. I then started adding the gym twice a week doing weights and another 20 min ellyptical. I then switched from doing to ellytical on one of those days to a zumba class which is about 35 minutes. This class combines salsa, belly dancing and aerobics. It's so much fun(I get a kick out of laughing out loud at myself in the mirror trying to do the moves). I am determined to lose weight this time. I have been working out off and on for about 6 to 7 years. I've never lost weight from exercising but I did lose some once when I was eating less(not necessarily more healthy though). I started off telling myself that I can do just 20 min on my lunch. It was better to me than saying I was going to do 30 min and not doing it. I've moved up to 25-30 min some days and for some reason it's easy to do now. It's become a habit for me. I just do it and dont think about it. In order for it not to become boring I have to see it as an obstacle. So I picked a certain route around the parking lot of my job and made it an obstacle to get to that point in 20 min. I started off taking a slow stroll just enjoying being outside. My speed has picked up some but I don't consider this my workout. This is something I view as changing my habits instead of just eating lunch at my desk. My real workouts are only at the gym where I can change clothes and perspire some. I challenge myself with how fast I can go to get to a certain distance within the 20 minutes. It also helps that the ellypticals now have TV on them. My point is if you start out small even if its just 5 min. you will see 5 minutes is no time and your body will push you to do more because it will become so easy for you. My next goals were increasing my water intake from about 4 glasses of water a day to 8. I'm not at about 7 glasses a day. My next goal will be eating habits. I'm at just about the right calories but I need to choose more healthy options. Also increase my eating on weekends because I often eat just one meal on those days being lazy. I hope this helps. Maybe telling some of my story will motivate someone. I really appreciate everyone's post because they give me ideas and motivate me.

So do you think it will be bad to gloat, just a little, at my appointment?!?!? [/quote] I say you have the right to gloat! I am just so thankful for the suport I get from my family, my Dr. and the people I work for. I have been over weight for as long as I can remember. I weighed around 150 at age 12. Now I am almost 21 and I am weighing in around 197. When I started dieting I was around 240. I FINALLY called the Dr. today and made an appointment for next week. I had wanted to lose a little more before I went back but my one perscription is about to run out and I was suposed to go back last month.

Harvie, in addition to gloating, I also recommend wearing a T-Shirt that says in bold capital letters, "I TOLD YOU SO!" iluvdarci, HesallIneed,Harvie, and everyone, thank you for your inspiring stories and advice. I'm developing better health habits in several areas, but I still have those carb cravings late at night when I'm on here. The last few nights, I've ate from four to ten pieces of sugar free and regular candy & or cookies. I don't know why I do this, except maybe inside I feel like I need to reward myself for doing so well. Also, I've still got this tape in my head that says that I can eat anything I want now, since I've lost so much weight. (90 lbs as of last Saturday). I know this is a fleshly lie or maybe it's from the devil. I also have the list of appetite suppressing foods that Harvie posted a few pages back, but somehow, I have trouble remembering to eat/drink them when those cravings hit. I'm keeping track of my food intake on sparkpeople, so I can see how many calories and carbs I'm eating, but that doesn't seem to help me stop myself from giving in to those cravings. Another problem that I have is lack of exercise due to not being able to go to the gym because of inner ear problems. I'm under medical treatment for this, so I hope it clears up soon. In the meantime, I'm having to stay home more and not be able to go walking on the treadmill or do any other aerobic workout that benefits my body. I welcome any advice for how to get more exercise during this time.

Mycatsmokey, Can you walk outside for maybe 15 to 20 min. a day? Maybe you can do this and do some stretches, pilates at home. IF continue doing something that keeps you moving. You can do squats, crunches & sit ups at home. In addition to my other exercise I also do aerobic type exercise in front of mirrow a few times a week. I also have those cravings for some reason. I eat sugarfree and some regular candysometimes but small pieces, nothing like chocalate or anything. I decided today I wouldn't anymore. I've done ok today with fruits and veggies. I got one craving but I wasn't hungry so I was ok with telling myself no.

MyCatSmokey .... You need SugarFree Jello Therapy. Go to the store and buy every single flavor package of SF jello, come home, and make at least three flavors ... keep them in the fridge. When you have a sweet craving, march yourself to the fridge and eat all the gosh-darned sugar free jello that's in there ... and when you're done, MAKE more! I like to be sure and get lemon or lime to go with the fruitier ones, and I like a nice color variety. I also keep a handy stash of 15 calorie Sugar Free popsicles in there .... your tongue will get sore and your brain will freeze before you can do too much damage with them. 90 pounds lost is amazing.... hee hee hee! I'm sneaking up on you with my 82 pounds lost! For me, I want to see that magic 100 pounds lost number .... besides, that's what my driver's license says I weigh! For exercises, lay on your back on your bed and do leg lifts.... that'll burn LOTS of calories and there's no fear of getting dizzy and flopping over ... you are already flopped over. When you get those cravings, send me an email ... if I'm around, I will reply back right away. I'm also on Yahoo Messenger. Oh, and Dill Pickles.... that sour salty taste is great for making sugar cravings hush up.

By the time I get home I'm starting to get shaky and I often have a headache. In the hurry of getting the kids snacks and getting home work done I to often grab some chips or a cookie or something. Right now is NOT a good time of the month for me to be trying to lose extra weight! I WANT CHOCOLATE !!! I found some interesting recipes on Atkins.com. I haven't tried any yet but I got some ingredients for them. Has anybody tried any of them? any good ideas?

I never seem to get a snack before I have to leave for school to pick up one of the kids Is that because you are trying to avoid snacking or because you don't think of it, or for some other reason? I frequently don't get round to eating at regular times ~ it's something that I have to work very hard at. Then I will get cravings for certain foods. It's taken a long time for me to realise that I need to eat regularly and it's taking even longer to apply that knowledge. I am doing better though. I keep a very simple menu planner that I fill in each night, with meals and snacks for the next day. I'm not making it vital to complete, but I find when I do, I eat better and so I'm filling it in more often. As for Atkins ~ I've not looked at his recipes, and probably won't because I'm not a believer in his approach.

My dh and I really worked on staying on the Atkins diet for several months about 10 years ago. We did loose weight (about 15 pounds) but put right back on as soon as we quit. Atkins is waaaay too expensive and extreme, in my opinion, to be maintained as a healthy lifestyle.

I don't really like his approach either, but if you look at his ongoing weight lose (after the first 14 days) he does allow fruits and veggies. And it's the diet my Dr. wanted me to try and I have lost around 45lb on it so I have changed my opinion about it a little. My Mom and one of my sisters have Type 2 diabetes so the are supossed to eat high protein , low carb. Lots of the recipes I was looking at were things made with soy flour instead of regular, cream instead of milk and so forth, which is what Mom, my sister, and I are supposed to be doing. Mom makes the diet easier because she know which are good carbs and which carbs will turn to sugar right away. One of my cousins lost a LOT of weight with weight watchers. She went to weekly meetings and was very consistant on the diet and then she got pregnant. Her baby is between 1-2 years old but she hasn't gone back yet. She has gained a lot again, but I think shes planning on going back. I really hope she does.

Plus I don't want to go out and walk when I'm light headed or dizzy, due to risk of injury, so that leaves that option out. I've printed off some exercises from sparkpeople.com to try, but haven't done them like I need to. I just need to stop making excuses and get right to it in order to lose weight. quote:

Regarding jelly... You know, it is pretty easy to make from scratch, without using sweetners of any sort by using fruit juice (though probably not pineapple or kiwi because it may not set) or cordial and water (still or sparkling) and gelatine. quote:
Lots of the recipes I was looking at were things made with soy flour instead of regular, cream instead of milk and so forth, You can adapt many recipes to make them with something other than regular flour. quote:
Mom makes the diet easier because she know which are good carbs and which carbs will turn to sugar right away. Even foods that convert to sugar can be eaten ~ you just need to watch the amounts and combine them with other foods so that the overal meal won't convert immediately. The problem with many weight loss diets is that once you stop following the diet, you start gaining the weight back on. And it's harder to lose the weight second time around (and gets harder the more you do it). You need to look at the foods you are eating and make sensible changes to your diet that will stay with you for life. Having a small bar of chocolate every day isn't necessarily a bad thing ~ having 10 bars a day is! Again, there are 'alternatives'. I eat raw chocolate most of the time, 70%+ chocolate some of the time and 'ordinary' chocolate now and again. I find that I want to eat far less of the first 2 chocolates than the last one. quote:
I think most of the time the problem is I don't take the time to get a snack. Then it's discipline to do this. It will take time, but work on it gradually. Think of things that you can have as a snack that are easy to eat (ie that you can put in your bag or grab on the way out the door and make sure you have them in the house. Make a point of stopping whatever you're doing 5 minutes before you go to pick the kids up and having something.

Those are signs of hypoglycemia. You should keep nuts or protein bars in your car to eat during that time. When you buy protein bars, look for ones that are low in sugar --under 15 grams. Or you could make a sandwich well ahead of time and take it with you. quote:
Right now is NOT a good time of the month for me to be trying to lose extra weight! I WANT CHOCOLATE ! Just eat healthy food in moderate portion sizes and add a few pieces of dark chocolate. Dark chocolate has less sugar than milk chocolate. Just because you are dieting doesn't mean you can never have any chocolate. Peace, Anne

This time I am determained to see it through and get down to a healthy weight. I don't stick to Atkins on weekends, birthdays, holidays, and other speciel occations but then I try to remember to take small servings of everything and I find that I can't eat as much as I used to because I'm not used to it anymore. By the time dessert is served I'm not as tempted to over endulge. I was surprised when I came back from vacation I had not gained a pound back, in fact I may have lost a few. I thought with eating fast food all the time and all the other junk food I was going to have gained some back but I think the key to that was staying active (hiking, shopping, amusment parks....). I've started, even when I am doing Atkins, having a container full of fresh raw carrots, celary sticks, cucumber slices, peppers, and so forth in the fridge and having a large serving of fresh veggies for lunch. I just started it so I don't know if my weight will drop as fast while I'm doing so but I don't really care as long as I continue to lose slowly. quote:

I think it will help my over all dieting to consider all the different options.

Sometime (probably best when you're not craving) just have a look at the different chocolates and think about them. We have a chocolate company, Thorntons here that sell little chocolates ~ different flavours and stuff and you just pick what you want instore ~ that are expensive but really good quality. They can last me longer than cheaper chocolate.

My snarky doctor noticed my weight loss!!! Though my scale at home shows a 84 pound loss, her scale showed only an 81 pound loss, but I figured that was close enough. First we were seen by her new Physician's Assistant, who was a breath of fresh springtime air compared to the actual doctor -- and her name is April, which was pretty fitting. She was friendly, encouraging, complimentary, and nice. Then we saw the doctor, who (chart in hand) greeted me with, "So, you had gastric bypass surgery?" I wanted to shriek, but instead just smiled, shook my head, and replied. "No, I just have been eating my veggies and exercising." She stared at me for a moment, said "Really? Well .... (really really long pause .....) ....congratulations." (Heck, I am not sure she BELIEVED me about not having gastric bypass surgery!) Anyway, we talked about my diabetes and my hypothyroidism, and my desire to be able to exercise a bit more without worrying about low blood sugars .... so the plan (YAY!) is to try slowly taking me off insulin over the next week (WOO HOO!), and once I'm off it, then I can re-start the thyroid medication. She asked how much weight I wanted to lose, and I told her I wanted to lose another 35 pounds ... to get down to around 250 .... and then to just take a break from weight loss and enjoy maintaining for a while, and she actually smiled (gasp!) and said that was a good plan! I was so relieved the visit went well!!! Soooo .... the plan is to reduce my insulin over the next week and then stop. I may need to decrease my carbs down a bit to compensate, but I may not -- depending on how my body reacts to the Synthroid medication and the increased exercise. Speaking of increased exercise .... on the way home my wonderful DH surprised me with my birthday present three weeks early (March 17) .... and bought me a spiffy new recumbant exercise bike that's compact enough to fit in our family room so I can pedal while watching tv .... woooo hooo! The bike should get here in about 10-12 days. (happy sigh)
