Harvie, I am SOOOO HAPPY for you!! I went to the Dr. today, too. I've only lost about half as much weight as you have but I lost a little more than I thought I had. I lost a total of 46 lb now and I'm at 197. He said he would like for me to get down to 150 but he was very pleased with my progress. He also said I should start watching calories a little more rather then carbs ! I am excited about getting off the Atkins diet and finding the food thats just right for me! He said I should start looking at calories and finding whole grains and other foods that are really good for your body. Its always encoraging for me to go back because the nurse and everybody notices your weight lose. I go back every 3 months.

Iluvdarci ... that is wonderful!!!! You are doing incredibly well. When looking to add more carbs back in, look for whole grain options with LOTS of fiber (since fiber slows the absorption of carbs and keeps your blood sugar levels less spiky!)

My snarky doctor noticed my weight loss!!! Though my scale at home shows a 84 pound loss, her scale showed only an 81 pound loss, but I figured that was close enough. First we were seen by her new Physician's Assistant, who was a breath of fresh springtime air compared to the actual doctor -- and her name is April, which was pretty fitting. She was friendly, encouraging, complimentary, and nice. Then we saw the doctor, who (chart in hand) greeted me with, "So, you had gastric bypass surgery?" I wanted to shriek, but instead just smiled, shook my head, and replied. "No, I just have been eating my veggies and exercising." She stared at me for a moment, said "Really? Well .... (really really long pause .....) ....congratulations." (Heck, I am not sure she BELIEVED me about not having gastric bypass surgery!) Anyway, we talked about my diabetes and my hypothyroidism, and my desire to be able to exercise a bit more without worrying about low blood sugars .... so the plan (YAY!) is to try slowly taking me off insulin over the next week (WOO HOO!), and once I'm off it, then I can re-start the thyroid medication. She asked how much weight I wanted to lose, and I told her I wanted to lose another 35 pounds ... to get down to around 250 .... and then to just take a break from weight loss and enjoy maintaining for a while, and she actually smiled (gasp!) and said that was a good plan! I was so relieved the visit went well!!!

Why do you go to a doctor that is so unsupportive/mean to you?

Because she is the ONLY endocrinologist within 250 miles on my insurance.

From what I remember I don't really care for it but I don't think I've tried it when I was craving chocolate.
I can be a bit of an acquired taste. Sometime (probably best when you're not craving) just have a look at the different chocolates and think about them. We have a chocolate company, Thorntons here that sell little chocolates ~ different flavours and stuff and you just pick what you want instore ~ that are expensive but really good quality. They can last me longer than cheaper chocolate.

I found some chocolate that has less carbs and more protein in then I've ever seen in chocolate. It's LINDT Excellence and it's 85% cocoa. It is rather bitter but I think it would be better then nothing. It has Calories 210, Total fat 18g, Saturated fat 11g, Carbs 8g, Dietary fiber 3g, Sugar 5g, and Protein 4g. The calories and fat do seem rather high but then I haven't learned what is high for different foods yet.

How much chocolate do you need to eat to get 210 cals? Try and compare Lindt (which is a pretty good brand if it's the one they sell here) with whatever chocolate you normally eat. The chances are though that because Lindt is 85%, you'll eat less of if than you would other chocolate.

You may also want to look into cacoa nibs. They're generally available from health stores and are raw cacoa that you add to smoothies and cereal, whatever you fancy really. They're a bit weird on their own, but good in stuff. Just something different, you know?

I think the serving size is an ounce , its a small square. but its so rich and bitter that most people wouldn't be able to eat a lot of 85% dark chocolate.

Is this the same as BAKER'S unsweetened Baking Chocolate Squares? are you familiar with that? I've never tasted it but Mom uses it for baking and such. That is 100% caoco. I found the 85% was less bitter when I melted it with a little bit of sweeter, cream, and peanut butter. but now that I am suposed to watch calories rather then carbs I may have to find other things to add.

In the LINDT 85% one serving (210 calories) is 1.75 oz. That seams to be a nice serving of chocolate.

We don't get that here.

I've just had 10g (less than 1/2 oz) of dark chocolate with orange and that was plenty enough for me!

When I get a chocolate craving, I have a cup of Swiss Miss Diet Hot Chocolate ... 25 calories. Sometimes I will have a No Sugar Added Fudgesicle ... 40 calories.

Baker's Chocolate is NOT meant to be eaten straight out of the package. You're supposed to mix it with butter (or some kind of fat) and sugar (or some kind of sweetener). It tastes terrible by itself.

We mixed it with cream, sugar and peanut butter and sweetener. I don't think it would be harmful to eat it alone it would just taste to nasty. Any tasty ideas of what else could be mixed with it? did anybody ever try a little bit of coconut?

Entry for March 01, 2008 (Saturday)
My February Nutrition Report doesn't contain the six days that I was on vacation and didn't log ... but it is accurate for the remaining 23 days of the month. I was pleased that I managed to keep my average calories under 1500, my carbs right at 55%, and my fiber is .... well .... rather amazing, I suppose. (At least by US standards. The average daily fiber intake for many parts of Asia is over 75%.... they tend to eat a lot more veggies and whole grains that the average American.)

Daily Calorie Intake - 1,459 cals
Daily Sugar Intake - 54 grams
Daily Cholesterol Intake - 140 mg
Daily Saturated Fat Intake - 4 grams
Daily Fiber Intake - 80 grams

Fat - 13.4%
Protein - 31.5%
Carbohydrates - 55.1%

FEBRUARY STARTING WEIGHT ......... 290.8

MARCH 1 WEIGH-IN ...................... 284.0

FEBRUARY LOSS ............................ 6.8 pounds

LOSS TO DATE ............................ 85 pounds in just over 6 months

I gained 1 lb this past week, due to water retention and too many high carb foods and sweets, but I'm making new goals for March, so I'm hoping for success this month.

My goals:

1. Lose 5 lbs.
2. Get 90 minutes of cardio exercise a week.
3. Get 30 minutes of resistance exercise a week.
4. Drink 8 glasses of water a day.
5. Eat one low carb snack after dinner.

Speaking of exercise, I need to get off here and go walking in this 60 degree weather. Have a good day!

I was looking at an Electonic Mini Hand Held Fitness Planner by Vivonic on ebay. I actually went on looking for a calorie/carb counter book I had from the library a while ago and stumbled across this. Is anybody familiar with one of these or have any advice for me as far as what to look for in a food dairy?

the calorie king diet book they use on the biggest loser is only like 7 or 8 dollars. It's small enough to fit in your purse. You can buy it at Borders or B&N or order it online.

Or you can use a website like fitday.com or sparkpeople.com. They are free. You can also download some software programs.

If you have a pda or pda phone they have programs for those. Take your pick.

Have you ever done a food diary before? I've only done paper ones, and having done a search for the one you're talking about, it sounds interesting... I like gadgets!

But would you actually use it regularly? I find with many online sites that you spend loads of time putting info into the thing!

I do keep a paper one. It doesn't contain any nutritional info. I can generally keep it going for a week and then I get bored with it!

I love gadgets to. I think thats what caught my eye. I was looking at FITDAY.com and I think I will try something like that before I allow myself to buy something new. I think fitday looks kinda interesting. I'll have to encorage my sister to try something like that. Maybe if I promise to buy her a gadget for her birthday she'll try it !

I use a paper one and on sparkpeople. The online one is very informative. I like the recipe calculator, where I can enter a recipe's ingredients and number of servings and it calculates the nutritional info for each serving. I can also add foods to the food tracker there. At the end of the day, I can print out a report with a circle graph showing how many calories are coming from fat, protein and carbs. This helps me learn how to make wise food choices in my diet.

Speaking of diets, I found this cute little joke at sparkpeople.com:

A rather naive gentleman was found by a friend sitting on the floor eating a pound of butter and a quart of ice cream. The friend asked him what he thought he was doing. The reply, "My doctor told me to go on a low fat diet.

Or, she may be encoraged if she sees you use yours regularly for a period of time.

There's part of me would love to get something like this, but I know that I wouldn't use it often enough...

I have enough of a problem remembering to charge my mobile up regularly and filling in my paper food diary.

It's been two months since I last took some measurements, and this glorious spring day seemed like a perfect time to see how I've been doing for the past two months, especially with my increased levels of activity and exercise. I must say that I was pleased with the results ...

NECK ... lost .25" since January
UPPER ARM ... lost 1.00" since January
WRIST .... lost .25" since January
CHEST/BACK ... lost 5.25" since January
WAIST ... lost 3.25" since January
HIPS .... lost 1.50" since January
THIGHS... lost 2.75" since January
CALF .... lost .75" since January
TOTAL ... LOST 15.00 INCHES SINCE JANUARY!

And, realizing that the scale and the measuring tape aren't the ONLY ways to measure success when it comes to healthy eating, I can cheerfully report the following victories, as well ....

Stopped taking one oral diabetes medication
Stopped taking short-acting insulin
Stopped taking long-acting insulin
Shoe width went from Wide to Medium
No longer need a seat belt extender to drive in a car comfortably
No longer need a shower stool in the shower
Able to comfortably walk over a mile or more
Able to comfortably bike all the way to the river!
Able to go hiking along the river and in the foothills
Cholesterol levels now normal
Blood pressure readings now normal
Triglyceride levels greatly improved
Diabetes now well-controlled (one oral med/diet only)
Asthma has improved, too
I can now wear my wonderful DH's fuzzy yellow sweatshirt!
Now wear clothes three sizes smaller than I wore last August

I am checking in this week. I was not expecting a loss because I ate off plan all weekend. But I still had a loss. -1.4 this week! Yeah!

Harvie, glad to see you are doing so well! Those are some impressive numbers!
