I was so excited to quit. I feel like a big idiot that i cant do something as simple as walk away from a stupid cigarette.

No problem, Jordan. I didn't mean to sound like I was picking on you. That phrase just rubs me wrong, KWIM? I can't tell how many people have said that to me over the years.
Focusing on God...You are so right about that. When I tried to quit 9 years ago (I said 8 years ago in an earlier post, but I forgot that I'm 24, not 23 anymore) when I was 15, my heart was not in it, and I wasn't focused on God. I wasn't really a Christian then either. I kind of *had* to quit because my dad (who bought my cigarettes for me) was quitting. We did the Kaiser program and the patch. But, I wasn't ready then. When I quit other drugs, my heart was so in it, and I was focused on God. It was easier to quit all that then it was for me to quit smoking only after 2 years of smoking.
One thing I do remember at that time was Satan getting in my way. The same day I quit, I went to school and totally avoided the secret smoking area and those friends. I sat in the lunchroom instead. As I was walking out, a friend walked up and asked if I could look out for her in the bathroom and then she would look out for me while I smoked. I declined. After school, walking off campus I took a different exit only to run into my friends who happened to take the same exit for whatever reason that day. They lit up, and I walked passed. I got to work and found a half a pack of smokes in my desk drawer that I don't remember being in there. I gave them to my boss. I got home to my smoke free dad and the night was fine. The next day I was walking to school and found a full unopened pack on the sidewalk. I walked passed it. This went on for a week. All kinds of stuff like this happening to me. I kept resisting until a week later. I gave in.
Wow, that post was a lot longer than I meant it to be. Anyway, Jordan, thanks for the add on Myspace. Hope you're doing fine.

How many cigarettes did you not smoke today?
I had another one about 10 pm. Do you know how many I would've normally had by 10 pm? A whole lot more than two. Probably close to a pack. That means there were 18 cigarettes that I didn't smoke today.

yes but did you smoke all that you would have if you weren't trying to quit? If you succeeded in cutting even just one cigarette out of your day then that is still success!!! It's a small success, yes, but it's not total failure.

You can do this...and you may not be physically starting right now, but you are mentally starting. Stay strong...and keep telling yourself that it's not about how easy or hard others have it....God will get you through this because of YOU, not because of them.
Roberta...that is great that you are quitting too!!! I will be praying for you too

A couple of things helped me.
The first is what I call "Closing the Door." I decided that I was through with tobacco & nicotine and that I'd do whatever it took to deal with and get past craves except to use tobacco or nicotine. I'd chew toothpicks, coffee stir sticks, beef jerky, sugarless gum or hard candy, cotton balls, peanuts, or wahtever was handy. I'd go walking someplace away from smokers. But I would not use tobacco or nicotine because that door was closed and locked, I wouldn't go there any more.
The second is what I call "Burning My Bridges." I got rid of all tobacco products and, if I found any, I'd crush 'em and flush 'em. The Bible says "Make no provision for the flesh." That can apply to many areas of life but for me, that meant not keeping tobacco or nicotine products "just in case I couldn't take it." Without anything to cave to, my only option was to deal with it with only God's help. Each time I got through a craving, I gained strength to go another hour. Eventually, I could commit to staying free for one day at a time.

This is a very good post!
Quitting is largely in your mind. Yes there may be physical withdrawal, but mostly it comes down to attitude and the refusal on your part to smoke.

I tossed a never-opened 200-count box of nic-gum plus another 20 or so pieces into a dumpster when I quit. That cost a lot of money but there was no good way to use it and keeping it around was not a good idea either. There's a verse that supports this:
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.

how are you doing now Jordan?
I personally wouldn't sell them to someone else...I have this thing about that. I figure if they aren't good enough for me then why should I sell them to someone else. I would rather eat the cost of buying them in the first place then deal with passing that off to someone else.
