Thanks, Betty! My real name is Christina, but ya'll can call me Stina cause it's shorter, LOL. I tried quitting 8 years ago and was successful for 3 days. Then I was forced 7 years ago by getting shipped off to summer camp, but I brought enough with me that I only went without a cigarette for a day. I tried quitting when I got pregnant with both my kids, but I ended up just cutting back to 1-5 a day. The last time, I used the patch, and I think I quit for a month about. My hubby wants to quit too, I think we're just waiting on eachother...not sure, we haven't discussed it.

Your post sounds encouraging. You have proven that you can quit smoking and you have even cut back on your smoking when you were pregnant. You should be congratulated for reducing your smoking for your precious children. You are a precious mother and we will be back you up and you chose the way and when you plan to quit the habit. I would think it would be easier to quit when your husband quits smoking too. This is just an idea. You have reduced your smoking for a good reason...you were pregnant. Now maybe you think of a good reason why you should try quitting or maybe you would like to try cutting back, first? This is not a pressured question to be answered, just a thought to consider. Maybe as a non-smoker I am not thinking correctly. When you plan to start let us know and you will have a caring and support group who are praying for you now and would love to encourage on your success-to-try to quit and hopefully be a winner at quitting the habit. We are cheering you on Stina!!! Go girl!

That's how I caved last time. It seems almost universal that the Devil tightens the screws on us immediately after we quit. But the effect is that we learn that nicotine doesn't make anything better, it only feeds the addiction and enslaves us. Another almost unversal thing that attacks us is the thought that we can safely have one or that we can just be a social user. Unfortunately, I didn't quit. I did find out that a friend wants to quit too. She and I have been talking about hanging out together more. We went to church together about a week and a half ago. We each thought the other had quit, so we weren't smoking around each other. We hung out the whole day without smoking! Then as she walked me to the car, she saw my cigs sitting on the seat of the car. She confessed that she hadn't quit yet either. We decided that if we hung out together more often, we might not be tempted to cave in to smoking as easily. We thought it was pretty cool that we made it for like 15 hours without smoking!

So, what are y'all's thoughts on using anti-depressants to quit? I've suffered from clinical depression off and on since my teens and I read somewhere that cigs can act as an anti-depressant. I'm wondering now if I'm not using them to mask some depression symptoms now. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon and I think I'm going to ask my doc about it. I know that Wellbutrin is sometimes used to help with quitting smoking. --Kat

My dad, in addition to the patch, took antidepressants for about a year when he quit. I think it was Welbutrin. I think it's a great idea if you're prone to depression already. It won't take away the crave, but it might make you not feel so depressed about it.

I used Chantix for nearly four weeks. That's how long it took to discover I felt no difference with it or without it. I have one friend who tried to quit with Wellbutrin (Zyban) and was not successful. I think if you are prone to depression or anxiety, there might be some benefit to treating that while you quit--and beyond, but I don't think SSRIs (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitor) should be used for the specific purpose of quitting. (Wellbutrin is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor. However, most doctors will start you out with an SSRI before going to that.) And the reason I think that is because they are very difficult to get off of and not something to be taken lightly.

Kat, that's one question I'll leave to the professionals to answer, but I'd like to know your doctor's response. When I quit a couple of years ago, the only aids I knew about were all nicotine replacements. Since then, I've heard about 2 or 3 non-nicotine medictions that seem to help. Anything that helps you regain your freedom might be worth a try. Day 736 nicotine-FREE, Day 833 tobacco-FREE.

Also, Chantix is getting some bad press lately. Something about causing diabetes in some people? Your doctor will likely know all about that.

Well, you'd have to talk to your dr. about antidepressants to get a script anyway. However, my ex used Wellbutrin and it worked great for him. I don't talk to him anymore than I have to, so I couldn't tell you how long ago he quit or how long it took him to quit. I can't take Wellbutrin, so that wouldn't work for me.

Good visit with the doc. He agreed with Jimbo (and the wonderful article he posted) that quitting smoking is more important now than losing the weight. I wrote me a script for Chantix, but it's $126 a month... and not covered at all by insurance. Now that I know it can cause diabetes (and I'm already very prone to it due to being overweight and having a STRONG family history of it) I think it's out of the question for me. I've smoked what I'm praying is my last cig on my lunch break today. The doc and I agree that my smoking isn't due to nicotine addiction but to habits and psychological need/want. I'm working on a game plan to quit and will share with y'all. My biggest desire when going to smoke is to get away by myself for a bit. At work, I'll go out on lunch, drive around the neighborhood and have a smoke. At home, I go sit on the front stoop and read a novel and have a smoke. So, when I feel the need to get away, I'm going to grab a big cup of water and do it- without the smoke part. Lots and lots and lots of prayer. I've got to learn to take my stress and burdens to God instead of thinking that a cigarette is going to fix it. I also need to get back into the Word. I'm going to start a Bible study book that I've had sitting at home tonight. Rewards: After 48 hours nicotine free: a new jigsaw puzzle, it will help keep my hands busy. After two weeks nicotine free: a new outfit for myself, I'm confident that with the Lord's guidance, I can conquer the smoking AND the eating problems both. My pants are already starting to get baggy and I could use a new outfit for work. After one month nicotine free: a new camping tent, Marshall's a Cub Scout and one month will be right before Family Camp Weekend. I'll have to run the rewards by DH tonight to make sure we can fit them in the budget, but I'm figuring that with my not buying cigarettes, the money will be there! --Kat

I desire to quit smoking in the strongest way, but fall every time I say this is the last pack. I lie to God and myself. I HATE this addiction! I was recently studied for brain chemicals due to they thought I had a brain tumor. PTL I do not....yet they found out that my brain was depleted of dopamine...which now that I read about that I understand that the nicotine acts as a stimulant or an anti depressant for my brain. Does anyone know of an alternative medicine (I will not take prescribed meds) that will help in dopamine production without my brain crying out for cigarettes? I know that through Jesus we can have the victory, I am having a spiritual battle with my flesh. The shame of my secret addiction is horrible on my soul! Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

In Him, are you a woman or a man? I'm taking Levity vitamins for women. I dunno if they replace dopamine, but they do elevate your mood. It's just a vitamin, but they put the right amount and right ingredients together to make it work. It really does work for me.

After a long, hard week, today is a great start for a tobacco-free weekend! For anybody struggling with nicotine or thinking of quitting, I truly wish I could give you a typical day like any one of mine are now. I awake, clean up and dress for work without any thought of tobacco or even a tiny twinge from my former Nicotine Slave Master. After a good breakfast, I get into my car and drive to work without the need or desire for tobacco. Then, no matter how things go - easy or stressful - I do my job without the need for nicotine to make me THINK it's helping me deal with or enjoy it better. Finally, my drive home, dinner, and my evening is spent without that 900 pound nicotine-monkey controlling me. Weekends and vacations are even better. I can plan the whole thing without factoring in a supply and opportunity to use my old drug of choice, nicotine. Quitting isn't for sissies. But the journey is worth it. Believe that and do whatever it takes to get past the next crave, the next hour, the day without tobacco. It WILL get easier. It WILL get better. And it WILL be worth the journey to regain your FREEDOM from tobacco! Day 744 nicotine-FREE, Day 841 tobacco-FREE

Thanks Mrs X. I am a woman....I take awesome organic wholefood vits & minerals...and Sam-e for mood enhancement. It is working....I heard melatonin helps with the dopamin as well...so that is next. Day 2 .....I am free to His credit & glory only! The following are scriptures that helped me see the truth..... "So any person who knows what is right to do but does not do it, to him it is sin" ~ James 4:17 "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" ~ 1 Corinthians 10:31 "Behold! I have given you authority and power to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and [physical and mental strength and ability] over all the power that the enemy [possesses]; and nothing shall in any way harm you" ~ Luke 10:19 (Amplified Bible) "And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart" ~ Ezekiel 36:26 Rejoice, for it is the Day of My Power for those who believe. And, if you believe, you will receive the power of My Spirit to overcome every obstacle and obtain victory in every situation. I have made available to you every tool necessary to live an overcoming life, but you must choose to do so and exercise your faith. You can also choose to be helpless and hopeless, but that is not My perfect will for your life. I have given you the way out; take it! Rise up and defeat the enemy of your soul, says the Lord.
