My little one is doing really well with the "little potty," but she won't go on a "big potty." I completely understand that it is scary and big. I'm trying to figure out a way to transition to the big potty.

How old is she?

Do you have one of those plastic trainer seats that fits over the top?

There is often a fear of falling down into the toilet, and also anxiety about their wee/poo disappearing (they don't know where it goes).

I used to take my children into the bathroom with me when I went, and got them to listen to the sounds and giggled about them. I also got them to flush the toilet for me and say "bye bye wee" or "bye bye poo".

It wasn't long before they wanted to try it for themselves.

Oh we also made up silly songs to sing whilst on the toilet, mentioning various toilet functions.

She is 3.5. She has been successful with the little potty, it is just transitioning to the big potty that we need to work on. She goes on her "little potty" then empties it into the "big potty" and flushes it. The little potty has a seat that can be put on the big potty, but she doesn't want to do that. It would be so much easier if she was willing to use the regular potties.

Is there a big difference in potty training girls than boys? My two oldest are boys...they have been potty trained for a while now...the oldest is trained for both daytime and nighttime, the younger boy still has accidentS every night...so, we are working on that. Anyway, my little girl will be 2 in about a week. We had started working on potty training, but then had to move, so I decided to put it on hold...so now, we are MOSTLY settled in, and I'm starting again. She enjoys sittting there, but doesn't do anything...she sings and plays and talks, but nothing in the potty. How long should I let her sit there? Should I say anything? Do anything to let her know what she's SUPPOSED to be doing? With my boys, I just took them every half hour...they ALWAYS had to go alot, and still do (not every 30 minutes anymore, but still often)...but with her, she doesn't go as much...so I'm really not sure how often to take her, how long to let her stay...and what to do with her while she's sitting there, if anything. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd say if she's happy sitting there, leave her there as long as she wants. Give her a book, or position the potty so that she can watch a DVD if she wants to. I always tell people it was Thomas The Tank Engine who potty trained my son, not me! (can't remember for the minute what my dd watched)

Yeah, but the only problem with that is that she wants me there beside her, and the older brothers are left unattended...so for as long as she wants doesn't really work out well...she'd sit there all day! LOL I have her potty in the bathroom so that she has privacy from the older bros...

So, just as a general question...for your quickest potty trainer...how long did it take? I haven't had quick one yet...lol. My oldest son took about 2 months, I think...and my youngest son is still working on it...after a YEAR, well, it feels like that long...he is great about daytime potty training, but night time is just now starting to get there... My dd, we just started...she had her first accident just about 10 minutes ago, and I think I scared her to death...she started wetting in the floor, and I picked her up, and said, "No, not in the floor, in the potty," and we ran to the potty. She cried! I didn't talk in an angry voice at all... Oh well...she'll get it eventually...

Edited to add... Oldest ds was 3 when he was trained... 2 months probably is a short period of time, but he was older too...I wasn't consistent with him until then...

Hannah was my quickest/easiest. She initiated it on her own at 23 months and was fully day-time trained by 30 months. That seems like a long time, but there was absolutely no stress on either of our parts, so it wasn't bad at all.

My oldest...we won't go there. I pushed and I should not have.

Second...trained pretty easily, at the same time as big brother (and he's a whole year younger). It was about 10 months before he was consistent. Now if only I could get him to lift BOTH seats before he pees.

With my ds it took 5 months to be clean and dry in the day (but we did start him and 17 months and just went slowly), and with my dd it took 2-3 weeks (we started her the week after she was 2).

The lid down too, yes, but I'm working on first steps first. He is 7, which I think is plenty old to remember to lift both seats. Ah well...my toilet is cleaned often by a little boy who "forgets". And I've only sat in pee a handful of times. I learned to look first.

Oh the joys of little boys and their, um, aim. I need to find the little plaque my mom had: 'If you sprinkle when you tinkle, please be neat and wipe the seat! '

He can't read yet. Perhaps I should take a picture of him cleaning the potty and put it above it?

uh, my quickest was about a week (maybe that long). She was ready, and diapers weren't working any more. Of course, I also had one who was really long before that. (nothing about how they were "trained" -- it was that their bodies are different)

So, on Sunday, we were at church and my little one has to go potty. The only one available is a "big" potty. She was wearing diapers (but she usually doesn't go in them anymore). I held her up on the big potty, and she went! Now, she likes the big potty. Woo Hoo!!!

I used to stand my litlte boys on the potty in public restrooms until they got the hang of not touching...I used to aim it too

I hadn't really thought about what I am going to do with dd...of course, she thinks she is supposed to stand in front of it like her big bubbas!

I've trained dozens of kids in one week - they are fully trained by the end. 95% of the kids I train are not yet 2 years old.

Well then, I'll be sure to send my next one out to you. He'll be 13 months Sunday. When would you like him?

Kidding, kidding, of course...I could not ever send my little guy away to be potty trained.

2shaye/skipperjoe, I appreciate your experience and your results. However, I do not think that *every* child can or should be trained so quickly at such an early age.

Donna, I'd like him when he is about 21 months please! Haha!

I actually do a lot of business from "word of mouth" with families who do drop their kids off to me for one or two weeks (2 is better if I don't know the child). It's kinda weird.....

I realize that not every child can train that young, but it's just been my experience that it works better young than late 2's.

I've been around long enough to see how parenting "techniques" swing from one end of the spectrum to the other, then back again. It used to be that parents did train their children young. Now it seems that it's more "PC" to "wait until they are ready". Who knows? Younger training may come back?!!

PS - I like Esther Joy!

Well, did you vote?

I had such a hard time with my first, that I determined I would not push Hannah. She took a while from start (Jan) to finish (August/Sept), but initiated on her own, and it was stress-free for both of us. I prefer this method...it works for me.

Kinda unrelated...
One of my cousins had a baby a couple months after Hannah was born. I heard through the proud first-time Grandma (my aunt) that "genius grandchild" was pretty much trained at 17 months. I did not quite believe it, but I admit, I was a bit jealous because I knew Hannah was not anywhere near "pretty much trained", and she was 2 months older!

Fast forward to this last Christmas, while at a family reunion. My little girl was 34 months, hers was 32 months. Guess who peed her panties twice in the three hours we were there? My cousin told me she had come to the conclusion that they had pushed her too hard, too early, because she had untrained herself just to spite them for it.

I promise, I didn't smile until she couldn't see.

It's hard not to compare our kids sometimes. Bottom line is that God gave them to YOU because He will give YOU the wisdom you need to raise them!

Okay, I voted, and now I'm gonna go post a suggestion for a middle name!

Both of my girls were potty trained by their 2nd birthdays and they were quite proud of themselves. At 18 months we bought a potty of their choosing and put it in the bathroom in front of mommy's potty. Everytime I went potty they went with me. It started with them "accidently" going potty and when they did we made a big to do about it. They soon couldn't wait to show us their progress. We then said bye bye to the baby diapers and went straight to big girl panties. For me, it almost seemed too easy!

May I ask what strategy you used?!??? I have had my little girl on the potty every 30 min-1 hour for days, and she still hasn't went in the potty. She will wait until she's in her bed and wet there, or in the middle of the living room on the floor...
