It sounds like you had a nice ride Joy2! We also are having cooler temps making for beautiful riding weather. My husband and I have been talking about riding our bikes to the zoo or possibly driving part way and then biking the rest so we still had energy left to walk around the zoo. So Saturday we decided to take the lightrail part way and ride the rest of the way. Someone had suggested where to get off f the lightrail so we took that advice. We ended up getting off in a VERY bad part of town. We found a hot dog vendor that is also a cab driver who gave us great directions. So we QUICKLY biked the rest of the way to the zoo. We had a nice time at the zoo and then went to guest services to find a better route home. The light rail station was an easy ride so I suggested to hubby that we could keep biking to the next station. He informed me that he was NOT going to ride all the way home. So I coaxed him along station by station a few more miles and then we jumped on the lightrail. It turned out we got on the wrong line. So we jumped off after we realized our mistake. We were going to get on the right line but I talked hubby into biking the rest of the way home! All together for the day we ended up biking 20 miles total! I couldn't believe that I was pushing him for once. It was a great day!

I begin training in 2 weeks for a Feb 200 mile 3-day race. Also, I'm using it for a secondary purpose to supplement my referee training. Our weather is still grossly hot, but at least in the evenings, it's cooling down *slightly*. The humidity is still just oppressive for about another month. After that, it's clear sailing, so to speak. We've got a trail in our county that is nearly 40 miles long, and I will be riding on it - the roads are too unsafe. I have several trips I will be taking to the panhandle of the state, and will be taking the bike with me - so I can ride while I'm there and we've got down time. I have 4 1/2 months to prepare for this ride, and 5 months for something else, so my motivation is WAY high to do this right.

WOW that is so cool Lisa.........I have done several multi day organized rides but never a race........that is really cool.

How many miles will you ride each day? Is it a straight race or a timed race? Is it in florida? I am so excited for you........

Yeah, it's here in FL - and it's about 60/day, from what I've been told so far.

I don't know many more of the details than that - it might just be more of an organized ride. Mark Schultz is going to be part of it.

I love him........he is one of my favorite singers. I saw him in concert this summer, when he had just finished his ride across America. He shared some of his experiences........it was very interesting.

I wonder if he is taking another ride across America only taking a southern route this time.........if so I bet your ride is joining him for three days.........how cool.

I had to take several days off last week for bicycle repair and the weather was awesome so I missed some great riding but I got it back on Friday and have been riding nearly every day! I didn't know that parking my bike in the sun all day while I was at work could cause the tires to dry rot. Now I will be parking my bike in the back room at work. The weather today was chilly but I loved it! I got in a total of 13 miles so far and I may go back out before dark.

Hi Joy! Today I am not feeling so lucky about being able to ride to work. I got hit by a car crossing a street with the light in a marked crosswalk. I stayed on the bike but hit the street on my left arm HARD! I always wear a helmet when I bike and today it paid for itself. My bike will need to be repaired although it isn't really too bad. The driver got a ticket so her insurance will cover the bike repairs. I will be taking a different way to work from now on so I don't have to cross that street. I haven't talked with hubby yet but I know he will not want me riding to work at all so I will have to deal with that. One big fire truck and two paramedics and one police car showed up with sirens blaring and while I was glad to be ok it was really embarrassing and I was wondering who might be driving by that would recognize me. It happened about 2 hours ago and I am still pretty shaken. To all who will be riding their bikes please wear your helmets!

Ok so now the pain is beginning to kick in. The arm that I landed on is VERY sore and bruising is beginning to show. I can move it just fine and I am pretty sure I will have no problem working tomorrow since I am right handed and my left arm was injured. I also called and talked to hubby. I wasn't looking forward to that and I didn't want him trying to work and being distracted (He drives for a living).

Wow 42servehymn I am so sorry.......Thank God you were wearing a helmet ...I can understand the embarrassment but I am thankful the driver didn't hit and run....... and help came quickly.

What did your husband say? Is he going to give you a hard time about riding to work from now on?

You didn't go to the hospital to get checked out? Keep an eye on your body and if anything seems strange go.......OK? A hard fall like that could have fractured a bone without you knowing it........did you put out your wrist to break your fall?

Were you able to get your feet unclipped?

Wow I am just so happy you are OK........

Hi Joy! I am glad that the driver didn't hit and run also! I just called to put in the claim with her insurance company. Hubby and I are going out this weekend to find an alternate route to work so that I don't have to cross at that intersection. I did not put my hand out to break my fall because I never even saw her before she hit me. I don't have foot clips. My bike is a comfort bike so it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of some of the racing bikes that you all ride but I guess in this case that is a blessing. I actually stayed on the bike but the wheels got jerked out from under me and I landed squarely on my left arm and left hip. I did go to work today and I was fine although I am quite stiff and sore. I also didn't get much sleep last night so that probably didn't help. If I don't start feeling better in a few days I will go in but I didn't want to miss work if I don't have to and I didn't want to be on pain meds or anything that would inhibit my ability to work. I have the weekend off and I will be getting lots of R&R hopefully.

Hi fellow peddlers! We went and picked up my bike from the repair shop today. Surprisingly the repairs were minor. I think I sustained more damage than the bike. My gear shift was on the handle of the handle bars and that got pulled apart probably on impact. That repair was only about $35. I also got a new seat since it was scraped up and I bought a new helmet since helmets are only meant to take one blow. All together it was under $100. I am still really stiff and sore but better than yesterday so I feel like I am on the mend. I have a completely ugly bruise on the back of my upper arm. Hubby took a picture of it in case we need it for evidence for some reason in the future but I said that is one memory that I didn't need preserved. Oh well now we have one for the scrapbook. It is quite windy here today so we may take a short ride but nothing major. Anyone else going for a nice ride this weekend?

Hi all! Today was the first day since my accident that I rode my bike to work. Dh and I went out over the weekend and found a route that keeps me from having to cross any major intersections (well one sort of busy one). So that is the route I took today. It was a beautiful ride, the weather was great and I took the longer route home. When I got home I wanted to bike some more. My son's school was having conferences tonight so I biked up there as well. It is only 2.5 miles but it is a little bit of a climb to get there. All together I got in 14 miles for the day. Anyone else?

Okay, so I'm ready to go out and purchase my first bike in YEARS!!!!!

I'll be doing all road/cement pavement riding. Any suggestions as to what I need to get to meet my needs? I want to be riding upwards of 20-30 miles a day on the weekends and 10-15 during the week.

My funniest cycling story:

The first year I did the Davis Double Century, my friend and I got the bright idea to overhaul our bikes the evening before the ride, and of coarse it took far longer than either of us had anticipated, and we didn't get finished with the bike work until almost midnight, and we still had about a 2 hour drive to get to the start of the ride; the ride started at 5:00am.

Needless to say, by the time were were nearing the 170 mile mark we were exhausted, both from the ride and from the lack of sleep. It was after dark and we were riding through the long and straight orchard roads just outside of Davis, CA, and our headlights were almost flashing as the light reflected off the reflectors on the center line of the road. It was then I did what I would have thought impossible, I fell asleep while still riding my bicycle. I woke up because of the bouncing caused by riding over the ground in the orchard, I was about 100 yards away from the road when I awoke. My friend was still on the road, but I think he had also fallen asleep (although he doesn't admit it) because he had not noticed when I had left the road, nor did he hear me yell at him when I awoke, quite startled.

I am fully recovered physically but the fear has not left and I am not riding nearly as much as I was. When I ride now it is purely leisurely and I really enjoyed the challenge of setting new goals and achieving them. I also started a new job and I have to wear nice clothes so riding to work isn't an option any more.

Okay, I went and test rode a couple of bikes today (they're having a sale). Started to get some info to begin to make an informed decision. I cannot believe how much they've changed over the years, but this is fun.

I recognize the issue of "fear" that can often follow a crash. The best way to overcome the fear is to take some time to evaluate the circumstances of the crash, and make adjustments for those things that that may have contributed to the crash i.e. "Could I have stopped shorter?", "Could I have turned sharper?", "Should I have been more aware of my surroundings?", "would a better sprint have got me out of the way?", "If I had better balance could I have remained upright?". Please note that none of this is to say that you were to blame in any way, it more a call to reflect on how the crash might have been avoided in spite of someone else's failure. As a cycling coach I often will focus people on learning the skills after a crash that may have been able to prevent the original crash, or have them practice those skills again if we had already worked on them. I do this because when people have the confidence that they know how to avoid a crash given the same circumstances in the future, they tend to be much less fearful, and overcoming the "fear" is really important because most crashes (in bike racing) that I have witnessed are cause by an over reaction because of fear.

One example of what I mean:

Often a crash may have been avoided if we could have only stopped a little bit quicker. A common mistake that armature cyclists often make when braking is that they often "fear" using the front brake at all, but professional cyclists primarily use their front brakes. Learning to use the front brake as the primary brake will cut stopping distances in half, and the dreaded fear of going head first over the handle bars is alleviated because if you use the front brake all the time you will know how much it can be applied intuitively, and safety is improved by correcting this bad habit. For the more advanced, there is a way to really stop a bike on a dime (almost). What is required is to thrust your body as far back over the back wheel as possible, when applying the break. Your seat will be nearly touching your chest if you do it right. This weight shift allows you to apply the brakes about twice as hard without flying over the handlebars, but this is not a maneuver that can be done safely without practice; however, with practice this maneuver can be a real life savor, and the time invested in learning can pay very big rewards. For those who ride with cleats, the hardest part of this maneuver is releasing your feet from the peddles after the bike comes to a complete stop (be prepared!)

For those in California: I just received the announcement for this years Great Western bike rally in Paso Robles. I have been attending this rally with my kids for many years now, and it is great family friendly event, and a whole lot of fun. Information can be found here for those who are interested.

The AMGEN Tour of California is Feb. 17-24

Who is planning to watch the AMGEN Tour of California this year? Anyone coming to California to watch the race?

They announced the course and there are some BIG changes this year. The stage into San Jose still has the same killer climb up Sierra Rd. (quite brutal), but it now includes the even more brutal climb up the back side of Mt. Hamilton a (4200ft Climb that averages about 10%). It will be tough this year to decide where to watch! In every past year the deciding climb has always been the Sierra Rd. Climb, but this year I expect the race will be decided well before it gets to Sierra Rd i.e on Mt Hamilton. The other big change was the move of the Prologue from San Francisco to Stanford University in Palo Alto.

I think this is one of best races on the Pro Tour, but I am probably a bit biased because the race is also right in my back yard (almost literally); the first years SJ time trial ended only three blocks from my home, and the course was on the roads that we ride almost every week, so we really did get a chance to see how much faster guys the guys in the Pro Tour really are. Before the race began a number of the local cyclists were out riding the course, and had a chance to ride with some of the teams that were warming up before the TT started.

For those interested there is live coverage of the AMGEN Tour of California at http://cycling.tv and http://www.amgentourofcalifornia.com/race-live/video.html They are currently racing Stage four, and Levi Laphenhimer is currently in the Yellow Jersey. He's a local from Northern California!

Saturday before the Tour started, my son got a chance to ride with Levi and other on the Astana team, he was even joined for a while by Robin William (The actor) who cycles as well.
