People get lost in the look at me circle, where they think that being in a certain place or around certain people will themselves something. Jesus told the women at the well that the time is coming when all will worship God in truth and in spirit. Not in buildings or temples or whatever we thing is a place that is holy. If your relationship with Jesus is a daily experience then a building to seem obediant isn't going to add to your faith. But it is a place to have fellowship with others.

Growingseed:

Based on my own posts earlier in this thread, it should be clear that I feel religious observances to satisfy the opinions of others are unnecessary. It is ESPECIALLY sad when overburdened and/or physically handicapped Christians have a guilt trip laid on them for non-attendance.

Notwithstanding, your remarks fall squarely in the opposite camp - that is, they will be misused by church-shopping "butterflies" who flit from one experience to another - never actually contributing anything to any local body of believers.

Church is not just "a place to have fellowship with others", as you have put it.

It is also an instrument - one God has chosen - to reach out to the community.

A very recent example (yesterday) is a kid's camp a large number of us organize and run each summer. It was used this week to introduce 55 new kids and (by the ripple effect) their families to Jesus.

When William Carey went out from Scotland, his church fathers were very unsupportive and, essentially said, "if God wants to save the heathen He will do it without your help"

From a THEORETICAL point of view, I could agree with you that God could have brought these 55 little ones into His kingdom WITHOUT our help, but, from a PRACTICAL point of view there are TWO things you cannot ignore

A) Any reasonable observation of this program or others would point to the fact that discipline and commitment and dedicated long term effort was necessary for such a program to run, and,

B) No conceivable number of "butterflies"

i) seeking "experiences", flitting from one church to another,
ii) sometimes "worshipping" in the Great Outdoors for weeks on end,
iii) flipping on an occasional TV church show -or-
iv) demonstrating their "freedom in the Lord" by avoiding ANY "church trappings"

would have been used to introduce these families to Christ.

There are churches that coerce people into this kind of thinking by their little commands that one must be there everytime the doors open, or they are looked down upon.

My church is 30 miles away but I am moving to be closer to it when my lease is up. My pastor believes that we should be in church whenever it is open. they also told me that they understand if i cant make it if the weather is really horrible snowstorm or if I cant make it. I have gone there since about November 25 and missed only a few.

we have service on Wednesday night, and when i get home from work, i have to drive 1.5 hours during rush hour city traffic to get there, and i could not make it because i got out of work too late and i missed church.

i have missed when i was too tired at the point of exhaustion, and if i had pushed myself I might have fallen alseep at the wheel... driving that far while exhausted is dangerous driving.

they tell me to use wisdom.. so i did.

this week i missed Wednesday because I was too exhausted and coming down with a cold. I was going to watch ministry tv shows but i ended up falling asleep all evenig and all night.

so even though my church strongly believes in being there all the time, they also said to me to use wisdom and not to drive when its that bad weather or im too exhausted. they say USE WISDOM!

The key is to want to go to church, not feel you "have" to go to church. When we feel we have to do something or other, a spirit of rebellion rises in us and questions like this thread topic arise. It's like seeing a "do not walk on the grass" sign. Signs like that automatically stir up the "I want to walk on the grass" experience. Before the sign I wouldn't even consider walking on the grass, but I sure want to when I see such a sign! If a person sincerely wants to go to church, desires to go to church, and something comes up to prevent going, then don't go. God understands. I believe God would rather people be in church because they want to be there.

I sure hope not because I am so tired from being at a 3 day youth conference I am tempted to stay home and relax, but am going to church since I feel I should in my spirit though my flesh says No!

My husband just got back from a 2-day conference, and stayed up late finishing up his sermon, and was up early putting the final touch on it. I know he's exhausted, but since he's the pastor he doesn't have the option of just staying home today.

Any church that thinks you should be there every time the door is open or you are sinning is too controlling with a cultlike attitude. I would find a place leass controlling. Been there done that and outgrew the t-shirt.

I did that this morning. I felt impressed awhile back about not getting out of the habit, of the meeting of the breathren. The word habit struck me. So I feel a little quilty, but, was so very tired, and am going back to teach a connection group tonight. I do not think, it is wrong to miss once in a while, IMHO. But I do not want to get out of the Habit of meeting and bonding with my church family. For what I said was worth. The Bible tells us to work out, our own salvation with fear, and trembling. Blessings

My husband as an elder, is somewhat expected to be there. Two, little old folks make sure if he misses he explains to them. They are messess, but cute, though very straight up.

I work a 11/3 shift. 11 days on, 3 days off. I'm on call 24 hours a day, and I work a minimum of 14 hours a day. I have every other weekend off, so when I go to church, I sleep through the service! Now all that being said, I don't go to church anymore; I go to a small group where I have learned more from studying God's Word than I ever learned in church.
My answer to the thread is, no it isn't wrong to stay home from church if you're tired.
