Sandy what made you decide on the Bumgenius as opposed to the other one size diapers? Do you know someone who uses them?

re diaper pails... what is your diaper pail? Do you use a liner in it? Is it just a garbage can with a lid? I don't understand how it isn't stinky if you use a dry pail!

we use a slender trash can (oval shaped) that is about 2 feet high...with a lid that has a pop up button. It fits perfectly between the wall and the washer. They don't stink badly because you don't have all the chemicals that are in disposable diapers in there. Also until a baby is eating regular foods and not just breast milk (which we do bf) then their diapers aren't really that stinky anyway. I mean, they stink, but they aren't unbearable. Kwim?

As I was looking them up, I realized that I did know someone who uses them, I just didn't know it at the time. They are very nice, trim, well made diapers.

our diaper pail is an older type diaper pail...I believe costco makes them...they have step button that pops up the lid.

I have a nylon liner that is in it...the diapers go in the liner..and then on wash day...I dump the diapers out of the liner into the washer...and the liner goes into the wash as well. It keeps down the number of times I have to wash the pail...

another thing I like about the liner is that when it is clean..it can be used to store clean diapers and seals off with a pull cord (kind of like a laundry bag)..this is great for LONG car trips...we use one clean liner to hold the diapers and the other one is in the pail with the strings pulled tight..and that keeps the odor out of the car (we had one baby who could not wear disposables at all...so when we made a 3000 mile trip....she did it in cloth...wasn't that hard...and we met lots of neat people every other day at laundromats).

We had an old nylon laundry bag inside of a pop-top garbage pail. I kept it in the closet. No smell. [:D] Honestly if you wash it every 2-3 days it doesn't really smell that bad outside of the closet but I just liked the extra door between me and it.

MY SAMPLES ARRIVED!!!!!!!!! I almost did a happy dance at the mail box last night when I got the two diapers I ordered, I'm so excited!!! So I ordered a BumGenius one size and a Baby Kangas one size and we have decided to go with the Baby Kangas. I like the snaps better than velcro, they are actually easier to put on her, I also like that the Kangas are much softer, and less bulky when folded into the smaller size. I also like how the insert goes in to the Kangas; there is a zipper on the outside to stuff the insert into where as with the BumGenius it is a little fold in the back and I find it gets bunchy when I try to put the diaper on her. I'm so excited, I'm so excited!!![sm=funny.gif][sm=funny.gif][sm=funny.gif][sm=funny.gif]

We are going to order 20 of them, hopefully that will be good. I am thinking that instead of buying inserts right now I am going to buy some prefolds and use those. Now, for making liners, the diaper itself has fleece on the part that touches the babies bum, is it special fleece or could I just go to the fabric store, buy fleece and cut it into rectangles or is it special diaper fleece?

Have you used the diapers yet, Chelsea? How are you liking them??

For those of you who used Chinese Prefolds in your covers, how many prefolds did you need? How many covers would you suggest buying?

Ok, since Kim asked about prefolds, now I have to post the link to the >prefolds package< I discovered while browsing one day. This is probably what DH and I will buy when the time comes, although I'm thinking I'd spring for the covers with snaps instead of velcro. The mamas I have asked have said that this would be enough prefolds and covers, although a few more covers might not be a bad idea.

I tried them and *LOVE* them!!! I am so glad we switched!! Not only are they really pretty but they are super to use, I love them a lot! We are using prefolds as inserts so I use them occasionally instead of a pocket and I have to say that I like the pockets better overall

do any of you know where I could get some cloth training pants? They don't sell them at any of the stores anymore--I've looked, and the only ones that I had seen were the gerber ones (I have 3 of those, and they are very thin and not really what I want). I know I asked the question in the Parenting section, but the only answer was Sears, which doesn't have them... I also called one of the diaper services, and they didn't know either.

myka I don't know where you are but Sears sells a Kushie's brand of cloth training pants, I have looked at them and they seem pretty nice. Here is their website.

I've been to Sears, so I know that they don't have them here. I've also tried Walmart, Target, Penneys, and Babies R Us.

Is it too late to chime in? Probably all of your questions (and more!) have been answered, but I was so happy to see your post (about being excited to use cloth diapers) that I wanted to respond. My oldest child is 28 and my youngest are 14 months, and pre-fold diapers are still my favorite. (I also love to still use ducky diaper pins!) The newer velcro diaper covers are very nice, and I use them, but they are so much more expensive than the old fashioned vinyl covers. A nice compromise are the ones that are like plastic pants, but are made of nylon (more light weight and breatheable). I am a fan of the dry diaper pale, using a cloth diaper pale liner that I wash with the diapers. Also, cloth wipes are so nice and such a money saver. Most of all, I know that using cloth diapers and wipes is saving my babies from the questionable safety of chlorine and chemicals used in disposable diapers and wipes. I order most everything (including the detergent for washing diapers & clothes) from GreenMountainDiapers.com.

Myka I checked at my Sears when I was in there and they have the Kushies training pants, they are $10 each, maybe your Sears could order them in for you? I don't know how bad you want them but I could get you some and send them to you if you want.

Myka, I don't know if you found what you were looking for but I just got an email from my favourite baby store and it had this featured, I thought it might be kind of what you were looking for. I don't know if it will be useful or not (I don't have much potty training experience) but I thought I would let you know.

Okay, so I have decided that for the newborn stage I am going to use Kissaluvs fitteds size 0. How many should I start with so I am washing every other day?

Also, I haven't decided what covers to use. I might get a few prowraps and a few bummis supper whisper wraps to start with and order more of the one I like best.

Any other suggestions for CDing a newborn?

Emily, since babies are supposed to wet something like 8-10 diapers a day, maybe 20 would do for you? Maybe less though, unless you're changing after every single pee (but if you're that aware, you could just hold her over a pot! [8D])

I don't have any newfangled diapers, but even with ones that I fold and pin, I find the newborn stage to be the easiest as far as diapering goes.

The easiest!?!? You are going to have to explain this one to me Maggie!

When they are a newborn they go through so many diapers every day... sometimes my husband would go through three or four diapers per change because of her peeing as soon as her diaper came off (I think his record was six diapers, possibly the funniest thing ever!). But I can't imagine with cloth! Maybe because I was so out of it and in so much pain after her birth but I wasn't ready for cloth until she was like three months old!

This is my issue! I love the idea of wool covers, but they're so much more expensive than the other types!! Yarg. I know I could knit my own soakers, but I don't know anyone IRL who's used wool.

the wool is cute, but for a baby born in NC in June I don't know if they would be a good idea.
