This is my issue! I love the idea of wool covers, but they're so much more expensive than the other types!! Yarg. I know I could knit my own soakers, but I don't know anyone IRL who's used wool.


I know people IRL who have used wool and swear by it, they wash it with some sort of special wool wash that doesn't effect the absorbency and helps keep the whole "wet dog" odor to a minimum. They are so darling when felted.

My mom used wool soakers on me [&o] and loved them. [:D] I have trouble imagining something knitted that wouldn't get soggy and heavy very quickly, but she said they were great.

Everything I've read about them online says they're wonderful ... I haven't really heard a negative about using wool for soakers/diaper covers. Oh - and Em, for summer? Apparently the wool keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. There was a review (somewhere [8|]) from a mom in the Southern States who said that her baby's skin was always cool when she changed it.

LOL - it's funny because I fully understand why wool should work so well, I just want to see it with my own eyes!! And Ryanne, they are TOO cute, eh? I think that's part of what's so great about them - you can customize them for your baby. And I hate adding more plastic to the waste stream (ie. regular dipe covers) although I know it's significantly less than disposables! I'm just so difficult! [8D]

I am guessing that if you use cloth diapers you need a bigger diaper bag, right?

I really want a Vera Bradley bag. My mom gave me $60 for one so I only have to pay the difference.

I am trying to decide between the baby bag and the messenger bag.

Are either of those big enough to hold clean cloth diapers and a wet bag for the dirty ones, plus all the other baby stuff I'll need? I plan to mostly use AIOs and pockets which are pretty bulky.

My very best friend has a vera bradley diaper bag. And it is HUGE. You will have more than enough room. I'm having some trouble getting onto her site right now, but I will and I'll link to the one my friend has. They are a lot bigger than they look.

So, I'm going the whole hog and switching to cloth wipes too. I'm really tired of having to dump the wipes in the trash every time I change one of the boogers...so I'm just going to cloth wipes and then I can keep the whole mess in one spot.

I think if I get pregnant before hubby leaves for the desert, I might beg for a Vera bradley bag. Hmmm. He'd have to have sympathy and let me get one right?

I have 5 vera bradley purse and I love them!! They are $60 each, which is a lot, but they have all been given to me by my mom for high school graduation, birthdays and Christmas. They seem to hold up really well. The only purse that looks worn at all is the one I got for high school graduation in May of 2004.

I plan to use cloth wipes too. I have no clue how to use a sewing machine, but my best friend from high school has one and sews a lot so I think I will see if she can make some for me.

you can just buy the baby wash cloths...they are the perfect size...same as wipes so you can still use the wipe containers for the diaper bag or the larger ones. Just get it wet before you change the baby....add a dab of soap if they really need it.

I'm going to use baby wash clothes, and get some nice, light flannel from the dollar bin at wal-mart and sew 2 layers together.

we hardly ever need two layers on them Sandy...but I don't like using the cheap really thin wash cloths either...I like the ones with binding around the edges...makes them not roll when washed too.

There's a lady at church who makes her own diapers and wipes and she has some with sherpa on one side and flannel on the other. She says it's good for the days when you have to really scrub thier butts LOL

This is a great thread, and SO timely for us! I've got some really good info from the posts here. We're planning on using pocket nappies (diapers).

The one-size ones like BumGenius look most cost-effective to us, but I'm a bit skeptical about whether they really can be used from birth to potty training. Are they really that adjustable?

LOL...well, I can't specifically say for the Bum Genius, but we have some very VERY similar to those and they adjust easily from about size 1 through size 4 in disposable sizes. Once baby gets to about the size 5 disposable diapers they are getting a bit too tight around the middle...and my kids are not chubby, they are pretty skinny...so I guess it would differ if they were like Maggie's kids and little chubbsters. Usually by that size mine are ready to be potty trained, so we switch to training pants.

Thanks...this is really helpful. My worry was that a "one-size" nappy would be too big for a newborn -- I hadn't considered that the opposite might be true! I think we might go for another brand (I forget the name) which comes in two sizes that cover the whole nappy-wearing period.

the smaller sizes are just a little bulkier then when they are older...but that's because of the insert, not so much the diaper and how it folds. This time if we use the diapers we have when the baby is really really little we will probably cut some of the inserts in half so that they aren't as bulky in there. Ours are pocket diapers, but we just prefer to put the insert on the diaper then put it on the baby instead of putting it down into the pocket. I don't like having to fish them out of there...YUCK!!!

I would caution you that if you use the AIO' (all in one's...where the insert is attached to the inside of every diaper) that you be careful with them...they tend to pull away at the corners on the inside and can wear out pretty fast if you aren't careful. I have a few friends that have used them and they very rarely were able to get two babies through each size. Oh and they are sizes, so you have to buy more then just one diaper like the Bum Genius one size fits most diapers. I have thought about getting some AIO's for newborn size this time around though...we will see.

I don't think it would, but I haven't ever used them. I think DD generates more puked on outfits then she does dirty diapers in a day[8|]

Sandy, I made a bag that looks like a Vera Bradley, if you sew you can get the fabric from Joann's. I know, it's not the same, but they are so pretty...

that's why we use a combo of cloth and/or disposable. When laundry is backed up (like it has been lately) we use disposables and just eat the cost of them. At night we use them too...and for when we go out of the house. So we have them around anyway. But TODAY we are catching up on all the backed up laundry from Christmas vacation, so we can go back to cloth this week!!!
I think it would greatly depend on how many cloth diapers you had, and how many your child/baby went through in a day. With just Jack in them, and with his age (18mo) we can easily go three days on the number of diapers we have before washing them.

I don't find it to be a problem. But we only start using them after about a month - when they're usually not going through quite as many as initially.

not for me. I have 4 kids...so doing the laundry for 6 people means I have to do laundry every day no matter what. So with diapers, it's a load of clothes and a load of diapers. Actually...diapers are easier, I don't have to fold them or hang them up LOL. Even with 2 1/2 short people in diapers (my 3yo is half potty-trained)
Ryanne, I was actaully thinking about that. Joanne's does have the neatest quilted fabric...and hubby said I can get a serger here pretty soon....so I would be able to whip one out in no time. I don't care about it being an actual Vera Bradley...just the style and fabric because it's so darn cute!! I already have a diaper bag pattern...

Nope. I actually have "laundry day" for regular laundry (though it usually doesn't get folded until about 3 days later [8|]). So throwing a bucket of diapers in every other day isn't a problem at all.


I have been sewing up some diapers with flannel--it is soooo nice. It's very absorbant and doesn't seem to get soggy and smelly like the cotton prefolds I have. Plus it feels nicer. [:)]

I love them, the fabric I used is raspberry pinks and reds. I would use it more but Micah told me I look like an old lady when I use it[8|] Right now Gabby has a black and white polka dot bag with red ribbon trim, it's adorable.

Will it work to use cloth diapers if I have a front loading washing machine now?

With our others we always had a top loader. I had a wet diaper pail, and I would simply dump the whole thing in there, rinse and then run a full wash cycle. I can't see that working with a front loader very well.

Anyone use a front loader successfully with cloth diapers?
