I have a tattoo...it's in the Elvish language that spells FRODO BAGGINS...

We relate on so many ways...carrying a burden we did not want to but have redemption at the end...also how one person can change the course of life...

For those of you who think that the early church condemned tattoos, you are entirely incorrect. The custom of tattooing the body was in use among Christians:
"Many tattooed themselves on the hand or on the arm with the name of Jesus or the cross." Procopius of Gaza, "Patrologica Graeca", LXXXVII, 2401. From "The Bible and the Liturgy" by Jean Danielou, S.J. (University of Notre Dame Press, 2005).

The early Chritsians did this as an outward sign that they had been baptized. When the Roman authorities arrested suspected Christians, they often looked for this outward sign as evidence. It was not until the persecutions of the church in the time of Cyprian that the practice fell out of use - the result of this, not knowing who had apostasized in the face of persecution, was the lapsarian controversy.

And I don't agree with generic, flash tribal pieces like he has, widely considered a bit of a joke in the tattoo community.

That's funny. Of all the different cliques in the world, I'd never have thought that there were tattoo snobs as well. They are usually the most accepting I've come across.

On a side note to the OP
I don't think tattoos are a sin. But I don't buy into the "I'm decorating the temple" stories either.
True, the OT states something against it, but that was in reference to the paganistic practices and identification.

Most tattoos however appear to be for the person rather than to glorify God. I guess it could be the intent of the tattoo that matters.

I think tattoos are a beautiful art form and have seen some amazingly talented people's work. I don’t believe the act of getting a tattoo is a sin (although depending on what they signify and why a person decides to get one perhaps).

It took me about a year to design and get my first tattoo, its not something anyone should rush into imo and should really think about what it means to them and whether it will still have meaning to them in years to come. I plan on getting more in the future, once I eventually finish designing more

If anyone does decide on getting one, i suggest, doing your homework and looking at artists portfolios and finding one who you really like & a good reputation. I looked through allot of artists/tattooists sites which took a while, finally i found a lady who I decided upon, who had a good online portfolio off her work, though I was surprised at the waiting time for an appoitment with her, over three months haha

As far as social issue's go, hmm haven’t encountered any negative views myself. I'm aware some people strongly dislike them to the extent they would think less of a person with them, which i think is sad, but imo those people will find faults in a person regardless.

I have a tattoo on my calf that is in Hebrew. What it says is for me and me alone; it is a daily reminder that I should be humbled upon my knees in prayer.

Example: if a woman had a tattoo of the name of an ex-bf, and he wasn't a believer, and she as a Christian wanted distance herself from her old life with her ex-bf, and she changed a tattoo that said "Bill" into one that said "Bible" (or a tattoo that said "Gary" into one that said "Grace", or whatever),

I guess this would be hard to criticize, right?

Only if it's tribal.

I guess they do but I'm referring to reasonable criticism only.

It's maybe something which a lady in such circumstances would understandably do.
