You know being low is not even what it is all about. I would ten times rather hear a good blend than a growl.
Oh I see.

The topic should be renamed to "my favourite bass singer". :)

I have scanned over all nine pages of this thread . . . so I may have missed a post or two . . . but one name seems to be missing from the discussion.

Gerald Williams of the Melody Boys Quartet is one of the finest all around bass singers in the business today. He is not just a low singer. He is a SINGER with a low voice. He is a wonderful soloist, he's one of the best at singing "modern harmony", he can sing rhythm songs, and he's also got the low notes to go along with it. Mr. Williams is the complete package.

Gerald is well into his seventh decade, and he has been singing gospel music professionally since he was 16.

I think there is no finer bass singer on the road today than Gerald Williams. He may not rattle the rafters with his low notes song after song, but each note he sings is a quality note, square in the middle of the pitch.

Gerald is not only a legend. He's a great ARKANSAN! Proud of you Gerald. AMEN!

I guess my other 2 would be Jeff Chapman and of course Tim Riley. Mike Allen just has it all in my opinion. If you havent heard his solo cd you need to.

AMEN! AMEN! AMEN!

Dan Britton beat Elvis Presley's bass singer in 1986 with the lowest note. 8 notes lower than the piano. Guiness Books of World Records. In 2005 Tim Storm, previously of Acapello, beat Britton's record by singing 10 notes lower than the piano. They both currently sing for Pierce Arrow in Branson. You can see them at piercearrowtheater.com.

I found a video of the current record holder. He is capable of hitting notes so low that it only shakes the room, and the human ear can't hear it.

Check it out.

Aaron, I love that line in the video, "He can sing so low you can't even hear it."

I thought, "Hey, I've got to hear that!!!"

---------------

General comment...
This topic is always funny. It starts out with "Who is the lowest" and immediately turns into "Well, my favorite is."

Has anyone offered up Bill Gaither, Ruben Bean, or Claude Hopper as examples of the "lowest bass" yet?

BTW, just e-mailed Gerald about his tenor job. We'll see what happens.

Billyboy, I read you question carefully. It seems to be in two parts.
First you ask about "really low bass singers". You seem to put the emphasis on SINGERS here. The answer Harold Gilleyis the lowest and best. David Hester is also very good. It must be noted when he (Hester) sings "walk that lonesome road", it is keyed much higher than where J D sang it, so he did not put J D to shame as someone suggested earlier. Probably Hester is the best from your list. Gerald Williams is also among the best.

Second part of your question you use the words "NOT a comparison", and "It is just who is the lowest". Here if you put the emphasis on LOW NOISE and not sound quality the answer is probably Tim Storm or David Kenamer. I have also heard Mike Holcomb make some pretty low, rough noises in the past as well. I think singers in all vocal ranges should learn to sing within their range. It would make for better sound quality for listeners, plus healthier vocal cords and longer careers for those singing.

As far as sonic vibrations, that is not vocal quality but sound system quality. Bill Gaither has a sound system in his concerts that supposedly converts his voice an octave lower than natural. Electronic processing can make a big difference.

I would like to know wat about those videos with Gold City and the Oak Ridge boys make's aaron look so talented. He is good and i believe he has a lot of potential, but just because he stood beside and richard sterban and ripped out notes that were louder....makes him more talented? not to mention he was a lot rougher and doesnt have quite as much tone. Richard sterban is a Bass with exeptional tone qaulity, and he carries himself with a lot class and sings everything with tremendous qaulity. He has sang on a more of a professional level than most basses ever do. Dont get me wrong, aaron is good, and i believe he will suceed as one of the best basses......but honestly what about those videos makes him stand out...thats where i feel most of the audience of any gospel concert doesnt care in what quality a bass sings as long as the notes are loud and in your face. I appreciate Good Tone alot more then all that cut.

Well for someone that was actually there and knows what a good bass's tone should be, Aaron matched Richard Sterban in tone and quality. I can't believe that a bass singer would judge another one based on a YouTube video. Unreal.

Also if you think Aaron's tones and sound is rough, I have one question, Have you heard him live in the last year?

I know everyone has a right to their own opinion on any song or artist. I think I would be a little more cautious on stating my opinion, like yours above, from a raw video.

to be honest i thought he sounded alright on that video.....but my opinion on aaron was simply based off of recordings....it was very evident on the latest GC recording they were more concerned him getting down low that his tone or qaulity of notes...why be so sensitive about myself saying he should focus on good quality singing. i myself said he is good, and i absolutly enjoy his bass singing. but my real question was....why does a video of him singing beside richard sterban make him look more talented?

I was sensitive because I defended his tones and sound? Similar to what I said earlier, you need to hear him do the songs off "Revival" or any GC songs at a live performance. He is every bit as good as folks have said based on the Oak Ridge video. It does surprise me that you would say he needed to focus on good quality singing on the Revival CD. He is one of the best on the road when it comes to great tones, pitch and doing a bass solo.

I absolutly agree with you. He his a great soloist and a great bass singer. and let me rephrase this, Aaron Mccune sang great on the Revival Cd absolutly. But IMO has sum notes that need be there. harsh, low notes with a lot of cut, my point is to this why cant young bass singers lke mr mccune stay out of the low stuff, like a's and g's, and sing in the C, B range which would be his sweet spot. Now the original thought to my post was not to bash Aaron Mccune in fact hes one of my faves. but why poeple thought he shone so much standing beside Richard Sterban and ripping out low notes? I just wanted to know what it was that i was missing? somehow this went somewhere i hadnt intially intended it. But now i would i like to know, what is your take of Richard Sterban's singing, that have might something to do with this.....?

Ps. The song "I'm Rich" is a perfect example of McCune using little tone and a lot of cut....expecially on the line "I've got more"........

In my opinion the comparison to Richard Sterban was that at such a young age Aaron seems to be developing into an extremely good bass singer such as Richard Sterban. Plus, some fans enjoy hearing the super low sounds. I happen to be one of them. But, my favorite song Aaron sings is "Teach me Lord". I think on that song Aaron sounds as good as any out there today. Just my opinion though.

Still love the smooth sounds of our man, Mike Allen. A modern day TN Ernie Ford.
He is so nice with the C's and B's...though he can sing much lower.

Having been there I would assume that it was because he could hit the low notes with cut and tone as well as Richard Sterban

The greatest bass singer of all time has got to be JD Sumner...but we're talking current right??? It would have to be Tim Riley (Jim Heffner calls him Cledus...he's hilarious when he plays the part!). Have you heard Rainbow of Love lately??? But I guess the lowest bass I've ever heard would have to be Paul David Kennamer formerly of Valor. He can get so low you can't even really hear it...it just rattles the rocks in your head!!!
