Be gracious to me, O Lord; see my affliction from those who hate me, You who lift me up from the gates of death, that I may tell of all Your praises, that in the gates of the daughter of Zion I may rejoice in Your salvation.

Psalm 9:13-14

This verse came up in a study prompted by thinking how difficult it can be in this world. Those who do not have Jesus in their hearts ... how they despite the light we shine.

Let's keep shining the light in our hearts [:)]

I am working on a project re: forgiveness. Here's something I just ran across:

Forgiveness has been defined as the willful giving up of resentment in the face of another's (or others') considerable injustive and responding with beneficence to the offender even though that offender has no right to the forgiver's moral goodness. Forgiveness is an act freely chosen by the forgiver. Forgiveness is not the same as condoning, excusing, reconciling, or forgetting. In other words, forgiveness, properly understood, occurs from a position of STRENGTH not weakness, because the forgiver recognizes an injustice and labels it for what it is.

Matthew 18:21-22
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times".

Resentments can eat away at our hearts and keep us away from God. Let's learn to forgive and release those resentments.

Very true.

Excellent study Michelle! [:)]

As I was listening to Romans this morning on my way to work, this verse

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
- Romans 8:28

brought to mind this verse

'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.
- Jeremiah 29:11

And once again I was reminded of His tremendous love for us. He wants what is best for us, He indeed has plans for us whether or not we know what they are, He will always meet us wherever we are, no matter what mess we've gotten ourselves into, no matter what crazy twists and turns life has thrown at us, no matter what we are facing ... to walk with us and love us and encourage us to do His will.

I was so encouraged thinking on these verses that I just had to come and share.

God is so amazing!

He is amazing, isn't he? Thank you for bringing back this thread... I was just thinking about it yesterday as I need some edification these days.

((( GNM )))

We are coming upon a time of year where we celebrate the birth of our Savior, and it should by all means be a time of enormous celebration and happiness. Unfortunately, it seems to be a time of stress and sorrow and difficulty for so many. I was contemplating these circumstances (and received some upsetting news, as well as some expected but still difficult to deal with news, this past week), and through prayer decided to focus on the promises our Lord had made each and every one of us.

And the best part: it's free for the taking!

I was excited to see this thread, too. [sm=heart.gif]

Here's the verse of the week on my calendar:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. (Eph 6:10)

He'll give us the strength to not succomb to the influences of the season that we sometimes allow to zap us of the joy in celebrating Jesus' birth--whether those influences be overly-packed schedules, moments of grief, colds and flus and sniffles, financial worries...whatever they happen to be.

Here's what got my attention in my readings through the book of Colossians last night.

Colossians 4:5
Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

I think this should also apply to our dealings with our Christian friends--online or in real life-- and not just how we should relate with unbelievers. I also applies to a situation I'm currently dealing with.

TNBelle -> RE: Edification of Singles (11/25/2008 7:53:08 AM)

This verse has given me a lot to think about lately. It has been quoted often in my current bible study:

2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

The interpretation shared with me is that when we are saved and the Holy Spirit is given to us, we are also given everything we will ever need to navigate this life on earth. I need to HS to guide and to help with discernment, and I need to continue to read my bible - but I have the strength, the faith, the love, the hope, etc. already. Sometimes I don't recognize it, but I have it.

Grace-N-Mercy -> RE: Edification of Singles (11/25/2008 7:53:14 AM)

Yesterday, I spent the afternoon praying for a coworker's healing, even though his prognosis was grim. After a while, my prayer, unconsciously, turned to "I pray that he is resting in the sweet, comforting arms of Jesus right now." When I realized the switch, I immediately recanted. [:)] But still, within a few minutes, he was resting in His arms. I had to reflect on that for a while. This morning, I was reading Daniel 10 where Daniel had been fasting and praying for three weeks and was visited by an angel with a message. Here's what my devotional this morning said:

Did you notice how our unique glimpse into spiritual warfare was closely linked with Daniel's prayer? Passages like this help us understand why the Bible tells us to ""pray continually"" (1 Thess. 5:17). Prayer is not shooting up emergency flares to God when things get rough. He is interested in our spiritual development, and that includes learning the value of perseverance in prayer.

Let's remember the power we hold in prayer!

A couple more verses to keep the focus on doing good for God when the going gets rough:

Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. - Proverbs 16:3

Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure--pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return. - Luke 6:38

Focusing -> RE: Edification of Singles (11/28/2008 9:58:32 AM)

This was in a devotional this morning, and I thought it was really well timed. With all of us single parents and all the pressures we feel doing the job of both mom and dad and working full time, it can get pretty overwhelming.

And David became more and more powerful, because the LORD of Heaven's Armies was with him. - 1 Chronicles 11:9

David became more and more powerful because the Lord Almighty was with him. Sometimes we Christians seem to shrink from power, giving it away too easily in the name of "humility." We might think it's sinful to want power or to be powerful. Here we see that the Lord's presence will mean power. The issue is always a matter of where it comes from and how we handle it, not whether or not we should have it.

Wow! To remember that as the pressures of life hit, knowing God's hand is in it, we need to remember to pray and seek His guidance how to handle what He has given us, and honor Him through our responsibilities in life.

Prairiehiker -> RE: Edification of Singles (11/28/2008 10:34:01 AM)

Here's my devotional for the past few days. I've been studying Hebrew and Psalm lately.

16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrew 4:16

Psalm 27: 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27: 14 Wait on the LORD;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the LORD!

No explanation needed. What reassuring words from our Lord.
