Nathan had to get a convertible seat after his six-month checkup, so we've only had our for a little over a month now. We got the Evenflo Triumph Advance LX Convertible Car Seat - Barley Twist. It's rear facing up to 30lbs and forward facing up to 50lbs. It reclines pretty well, especially rear facing, but Nathan will sometimes slump forward or to the side when he zonks out. Still, he seems pretty comfy in it. It goes for about $130 online at Target.
I think I would buy it again. My SIL bought it for our niece, and she is pretty happy with it.

We bought a Britax Marathon with some baby shower money we had, we haven't started using it yet... I chose it based on it's weight limits because we are going to stay rear facing for as long as possible(until she hits 33lbs) and because it goes to 65lbs forward facing, we should get 5-6 years of use out of it(unless she hits the height limit) so I didn't see any harm in paying $260.
Beware with Target's weight limits, I've found some errors- they had published that the Britax Diplomat is up 65lbs when it's really only 40lbs.

They had the Alpha Omega ones at Biglots for about $75(I think...) last week.

Cosco is what we got. It does recline, but can't be strapped in while you recline it. It was like $50 from Wal*Mart. It got excellent safety ratings. The straps are easily adjustable for a baby with a coat on or off. It's just one little button and you pull or push the strap. You see it on Amazon HERE. The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't recline it while the baby is in it, and the cupholder is stupid and really hard to put in there. Everything else about it is great. The only problem I'm running in to is that Timmy is almost 40 pounds (he just turned 2), so he will outgrow it anytime now. I don't feel comfortable with him in a booster seat with just a seatbelt and no 5-point harness. So, if you're thinking Hunter might be 40 pounds before he's ready for a booster with seatbelt, you may want to consider a carseat with a 60 pound rating. I don't think convertible carseats go any higher than that.

We have the Eddie Bauer 3 in 1
We started putting Akeelah in it when she was about 5 months old (she was too big for the infant carrier). It's rear facing to 35 lbs, forward facing to 40 lbs and then the appropriate booster seat which is required by law in Ontario.
While ours doesn't recline on it's own there are instructions in the manual how to get it to recline safely on your own. Akeelah has no problems sleeping in it.

Graco makes a carseat/booster seat that has a 5-point harness. This is what we'll be getting Timmy since I don't feel comfortable with just a regular seatbelt with booster.

We need to have assisted seating up to 100lbs, so we just figured that after he breaks the 50lbs barrier of our current seat, we'd just get him a booster seat (some have 5-point harnesses).

I know I definitely don't want to go cheap, just to be cheap. I want a good carseat that is going to be comfy as possible for him to ride in, safe, and is going to last. Thanks for all the post so far, we are definitely looking at the Alpha Omega one closely as the Eddie Bauer 3 in 1.
I am a little aggravated that I didn't know this sooner, but we have the Fisher Price Safe Voyage Travel System. It is made by Britax, but sold under the Fisher Price name and is a lot cheaper. We have loved it, but they stopped making it. Well I was looking online last night and apparently they had made a Safe Voyage Convertible carseat that was very similar to the Britax. Though you can find them online they are not making them anymore, but hubby doesn't want to purchase a carseat that isn't in production anymore. Oh well, if I would have known sooner we would have bought it a long time ago.

What are the recommendations for moving a child to a convertible seat? DS is 17 lbs. and is still in his infant carrier. All our pediatrician told us was that he should be rear facing until he is a year old AND 20 lbs.

he should be rear facing until AT LEAST a year and 20 lb....however it is safer to leave them rear facing much longer then that...you just have to get a seat that is rear facing and not just front facing. It is safer for a child to be rear facing because of the way their bones and joints are...they are not fully formed yet and can not handle the pressure that an older child or adult can handle in the forward facing position.
Eventhough our daughter is 3, she is petite and weighs around 30lbs. I wonder if she should still be rear facing? My niece who is the same age is in a booster seat. They just don't seem safe to me.

Your infant carrier should have sticker on the side that tells you the height and weight limits for that specific carrier. Our carrier is up to 30 inches and 22 lbs, well our son measured 28 inches at his 9 month appointment and was a little over 18 lbs. He will remain rear facing for a while, even after he hits 20 lbs. and 1 year old though for my peace of mind. Its just time now that he is out growing his carrier.

My first daughter stayed in her infant carrier until she was 26 months old- it took her until after her second birthday to reach 20 pounds- at that point, we turned her forward and she will be four in 2 weeks- she is still in a full car seat. When she reaches 40 pounds, we will switch to a booster, though for her, that will probably not be until she is 5. It isn't really about he ages, it is about body type, height, and weight. The reason that the laws are becoming more stringent is that cars and seat belts are just not safe for kids. Our first will probably be in a booster until she is 10, but I'd rather she be safe and in a booster...
Chelle- pm me if you want consumer reports info. Also, keep in mind that the recline feature is for rear facing- the recline positions are only to be used front facing to match the slant of your seat so that it fits more securely. They are not meant to sit up while awake and then recline if they doze off- unfortunately, they are stuck upright once they are turned around.

Our Cosco convertible seat starts at 20 pounds. Jimmy is 6 months old, and he's just about ready to go into it (rear-facing of course).
