kohls356 -> Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/15/2007 2:14:11 PM)

This happened in my area last year and the parents are now speaking out about it. My daughter knew both girls but I did not. I do know several people who do know the families.

Since this story broke the people in our area are just outraged and would like to see something happen to this woman, but there seems to be no charges to make against this woman. I honestly do not know how she sleeps at night. Do you believe there could be a law made for this type of behavior?

It seems this mother did all she could with allowing her daughter to have a myspace and monitored it well. I am sure she lives everyday thinking if only she had logged it off before she left and she hadn't seen what was written.

The article is long but worth reading.

Hmmm it was just there I will see if there is another page.

kohls356 -> RE: Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/15/2007 2:27:08 PM)

This shows a video and part of the article.

Basically what it is was a 13 year old girl had battled depression for awhile. She wanted a myspace account and her mother let her but only her mom and her dad had the password. A boy befriended her and she started to feel better that someone actually liked her. He then started saying mean things to her on her myspace. One of them was how the world would be better off without her and no one liked her. She hung herself that night.

A few weeks later it was learned that this boy never existed. He was made up by a mother of a girl that Megan used to be friends with. She did this so she could see if she was saying anything about her daughter. She knew this young girl sufferend from depression yet she continued to taunt her and tease her online under this fake account.

These families even used to be friends. But there are no charges that can be brought against this woman. The family knows that what their daughter did was her choice but want people to be aware to be careful about who your children are communicating with online. These people did what would seem to be right in monitoring their daughters account but it still wasn't enough.

I read about this yesterday and I would think there could be a law applied. One hard lesson I hope is learned is that the age restrictions for certain activities are there for a reason.

She was of the age that myspace requires. She wasn't allowed to have a myspace until she turned 14.

StephK -> RE: Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/15/2007 2:55:06 PM)

I think the adults who did what they did need to be at the minimum shunned by the community and there is bound to be one law that could be applied for legal recourse.

Generally speaking though, Parents need to understand that there are some really sick evil people online and not allow private use of the internet. These parents did monitor more than most parents do but even with close monitoring it wasn't sufficient to protect this girl. The truth is you don't know who is on the other side.

uncabeeil -> RE: Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/15/2007 2:56:27 PM)

According to the article I read she never made it to 14. She died on the eve of her 14th birthday. LINK

I think her family is making a mistake by not taking this to civil court since no criminal charges are going to be filed. This is murder by any standards. Those adults are directly responsible for the death of that poor child. Sadly, her parents also share some of the blame for allowing her to register when she wasn't old enough.

In my opinion, a 13 year old has no business being on MySpace.

If parents want to deal with her depression then they should take her to a professional.

To all parents:
If your child suffers from depression the cyberworld is not the ideal platform in helping your child deal with that depression. Please please please take the child to a licensed counselor.

kohls356 -> RE: Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/15/2007 3:17:00 PM)

This girl was in counseling and had been for several years. She was actually improving and one of the reasons they allowed her to have a myspace. I don't blame the myspace, I blame the vile woman who felt the need to bully and taunt a child.

bzirk -> RE: Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/15/2007 3:27:25 PM)

I agree, Fritz.

I also think that Bill makes a great point about civil court. That is where the family needs to get redress for this tort against their daughter. Might make someone else think twice about pulling something like this.

Roberta_ -> RE: Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/15/2007 3:39:28 PM)

I have a MySpace account, but I forget to go to it. I think in the six months I've had it I've been to it three times.

My dd had one and I took it away from her. I really don't think that kids need to be spending that much time on the computer.

I do think that some sort of charges should be pressed against this other woman though. She knew that she was dealing with a fragile teenager and what she did was outright wrong!

rlj -> RE: Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/15/2007 3:45:01 PM)

I have never once agreed with you more wholeheartedly Fritz.

One can be found completely innocent of murder and get totally soaked in civil court. I hope they sue.

just terrible. people, people, people........

The article I linked to says they don't plan to. I wish they could see this isn't about money. Bringing them to court would bring wider exposure to the situation and perhaps force some kind of legislation so that the next victim's family would have the chance for criminal courts to do something. As it stands now these people are getting away with murder.

I agree, Bill. How very sad that an adult can behave this way.

I'm inclined to agree as well.

I don't if this is too off tangent here, but whenever I hear news stories such as this, I can't help but reminded of the whole, sociological studies concerning the increasing maturity gap with our current crop of "adults," especially if they're tasked with parental duties. A huge part of me is speculating at best, if the parents who orchestrated this fake myspace prank were/are behaving no more differently than when they were that 13 year old girl's age, when backstabbing and bullying--albeit more high tech nowadays--is the status quo![:'(]

...kinda like the old, "boys-will-be-boys," "girls-just-wanna-have-fun," cavalier excuses, though I've read in psychiatric/sociology studies that bullies now stand an even greater chance of becoming less productive, and less sociable adults later on! You don't say...

laura... -> RE: Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/16/2007 12:57:44 PM)

I think there are laws that could be applied to this tragedy. A good proscuting attorney could probably get a conviction if there was sufficient evidence. Unfortunately, it appears that the FBI was unable to retrieve the most relevant messages.

I'll echo what others have said, "Children should not be on the internet."

gaylel1 -> RE: Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/16/2007 11:42:15 PM)

This is another example that Satan and his preditors are continually deciving those young people and constanly luring them because these young people do not know any better.

This and the killing of a woman who met a man at "Craig's List" shows why there is so much deception online these days.

Children and adults need to be careful. Adults when they go on the dating sites, even the christian ones need to make sure that the person they are talking to are that person and if it something that is not right, use your holy spirit common sense to end it.

Same with the parents and the children as well.

Acts29 -> RE: Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/16/2007 11:59:59 PM)

In reviewing this situation. The woman who deceived the child was someone she knew. This was not a stranger.

I am amazed at the number of posts criticizing the parents, the child or my space. The child was receiving counseling. The parents were not the type who allowed their child on the internet without supervision. This woman knew the child's situation. She was aware that she had problems with depression. This is sickening to me. It sickens me that this mature woman would go to such lengths to see if anyone is saying anything bad about her child. Does anyone else see the irony in this situation?

Actually, proving causation would be nearly impossible in a case like this. There may be some torts that could be applied, but probably no criminal laws on the books... yet. This young woman was definitely being harassed. And that harassment ultimately led to her taking her own life. It's easy to see it that way when it's reported on the news, but a whole different matter when it comes to applying the law. Unfortunately, it's not a crime to lie. That's basically what went on in this case.

This is a problem that I suspect will become even bigger without laws in place to curtail internet deceptions of this type.

I pray that somehow it may lead to legislation to make internet deceptions of this type a criminal act. If people who behave badly over the internet, causing others real harm, begin to be held accountable for their bad behavior- those people will eventually learn- if they know the consequences may lead to jail/prison time.

How terrible...

**Going to check her kids MySpace accounts now**

Windchime -> RE: Girl commits suicide over fake myspace. (11/17/2007 2:38:27 AM)

I think there needs to be a law regarding internet use by people that disguise who they really are WHEN malicious intent happens.

What the (bad) Mom did was malicious and cruel manipulation. She needs to be punished for this.

Just because she refuses to admit wrong, does not mean she is free of wrongdoing.

I agree with others that said as much in that; a very clever attorney would in fact find a way to either see this act punished or see it named as a true crime regarding certain criteria.

It is long overdue.
